Her Nickname

1994 Words
“So, tell me, my dear sister. What have I missed for the past years?” After Mera introduced Reese to all of us, Amelia decided to rest for a while. So here I am now in her old room because this is where she dragged me earlier. I gave a restrained smile as she glanced at me. "Whatever I told you during our FaceTime calls, that's exactly what's happening here." Amelia nodded briefly while unpacking her five big luggages. "Really? Nothing else happened aside from that, Mera?" she asked with a laugh. If you only knew what Alonzo did to me, Amelia. You might freak out if I told you about it. "Yeah, really," I managed to say with a forced laugh. While staring at Amelia’s side profile, I could really see the resemblance between her and Alaric, even though they're non-identical twins. Everyone said that Alaric is just like Amelia but in male form, and I agree with that. Since Amelia left to study abroad, I haven't set foot in her room even once because her mother locked it and also forbade me from entering. So, when I got back here, it felt so good. I couldn't help but remember the days when we used to play childish games, sometimes with Alaric joining us, back when we were just barely teens. Just like before, Amelia never runs out of stories to tell. She tells me many things, but not one of them registers in my mind. How can I when I am breathing the same air as that man right now? I really want to ask her about him, but I'm afraid she might notice something different in my behavior. I'm not one to ask about people's lives unless I know them personally. My thoughts were disrupted when the door opened. Amelia and I both looked towards it. When he entered, our eyes met immediately, so I quickly averted my gaze, pretending to be busy helping Amelia unpack her things. "Brother, is it still your habit to enter without even knocking?! You really haven't changed at all!" I heard a hint of irritation in Amelia's voice. I heard Alonzo snort at Amelia’s complaint. His cologne was really strong because the moment he entered the room, it seemed like the scent from Amelia’s air humidifier disappeared and was replaced by his cologne. Alonzo sneered. "Is that how you're going to greet me, Amelia, really? Not even a 'Thank you, Brother for letting me borrow your Lexus-" Amelia cut her brother off. "Who knows, Brother, I might say that if you gave it to me! Please!" "In your dreams, Amelia. I don't just give away my babies like that," Alonzo smirked mockingly and crossed his arms. He took a sideways glance in my direction, but when he saw me looking at him, he quickly looked away. I lost my gaze on him when Amelia suddenly shook my arm, like a child seeking an ally. Her mouth was slightly agape, as if she couldn't believe what her brother had just said. "Look at him, Mera! He's so stingy! He owns 76 luxury cars, and he doesn't want to give me even one!" Amelia said, exaggerating. 76 luxurious cars? He must be incredibly wealthy! Now I can't help but wonder about the three black cards he discreetly had his secretary deliver to me. I wonder how much the limit is on those, or the question is, does it even have a limit? "I hate you, brother! Maybe you're spending millions on your women, but you're so stingy with me!" Amelia accused her brother, her voice tinged with resentment. I saw how swiftly Alonzo transferred his gaze from Amelia to me. I glared at him fiercely, making him chuckle as he looked away. How could he... I will never be one of his girls! I really hate him to death! “Whatever, Amelia. Right, I have something important to ask you. The reason why I came here.” I want to leave here and rest. I don’t want to hear any more of their conversation as I believe I don’t have the right to stick my nose in their personal affairs. “Is what I heard earlier true? That you’re marrying that guy?” Seriousness dripped from Alonzo’s voice. I couldn't help but look at Amelia, who was now laughing awkwardly while giving her brother a meaningful stare. I couldn’t help but feel nervous about where this conversation was heading. “Fortunately, yes, brother. Reese is my fiancée…” Amelia said firmly. Anxiety is kicking in on my body. Alonzo approached the bed and sat at the very end while still staring at his sister. While looking at him, I secretly prayed that he wouldn't reveal the truth. Please, Alonzo, not now. I couldn't afford to break Amelia’s heart. Not yet, I know she’s not ready! Alonzo sighed deeply. “Do you know him well, baby?” I was startled when Amelia suddenly looked at me. Her eyes seemed to be searching for answers as to why her brother was asking such strange questions. I shrugged and shook my head, pretending to be completely unaware of her brother's inquiries. “Of course, brother. I know him well! I wouldn’t marry him if I didn't,” Amelia replied, irritation evident in my voice. “Like for how long, Amelia? Did it even take a year?” "Amelia..." I called her name as she suddenly stood up from her seat. If there's one thing that sets her apart from her twin Alaric in terms of attitude, it's this. Amelia is easily swayed by emotions. “1 year and a half, brother-” "What?! That's too short, Amelia Victoria!" Alonzo's voice slightly raised. Gosh, I don’t know what to do! I just really hate when someone is raising a voice at each other. “Why are you being like this, brother? You know me well! You know I don't just enter into relationships lightly. I love him, Brother! I love Reese so much! You’re not being funny anymore!” Amelia exclaimed, her voice rising in explanation. I knew this argument could escalate, and the truth might even come out! I found myself walking slowly away from where Alonzo was. He's the one I should calm down about because he's the one who started this conversation after all. “Alonzo…” I whispered his name softly enough for him to hear, and he immediately turned to look at me. Using my pleading eyes, I stared at him intently, hoping to convey the message of what I was trying to say through my gaze. He stared at me intently, and when he looked away, I knew he understood what I was trying to convey. Alonzo let out a deep sigh before slowly approaching Amelia and gently embracing her, as if he were coaxing a child. "Baby... I'm sorry, I'm just worried about you, okay? Please don't take my concerns the wrong way. You're the only sister I have, and I admit it... I'm afraid that you might end up with the wrong guy." I knew that in every word Alonzo spoke, there was truth. He is genuinely worried about his sister. A sense of relief washed over me as I watched Amelia give in to her brother's affection and return his hug. Amelia pouted like a baby before she released the hug. "Promise me that you won't do it again. Especially in front of Reese, Brother. It would really be disrespectful!" Alonzo lazily shook his head. “Yeah, I promise.” Siblings can really be weird sometimes, right? Just a moment ago, they were arguing, and now they're chatting as if there was no shouting earlier. As usual, Amelia is leading the conversation again. I quietly listened to the two of them while looking at Amelia, wondering why she didn't seem tired at all. Doesn't she have jet lag? She can really be weird sometimes! I was startled when Amelia suddenly took the clothes I was folding and laid her head down on my lap. I glanced at Alonzo on the other side of the bed, and he raised an eyebrow at me before shifting his attention to Amelia. I wasn't used to or comfortable with the situation of the three of us together, especially because it used to be Alaric with us, not Alonzo. Should I come up with a reason to leave? I had nothing to do but pretend to listen to Amelia, even though the truth was I was bothered by the subtle glances from the man in front of me. He was now seated on the single chair sofa, leaning back with crossed legs. "Oh, right, I forgot to tell you, brother!" Amelia glanced and tilted her head in Alonzo’s direction. "Do you still remember Reese's cousin that I introduced to you before? She's coming later to check up on Reese!" "And?" Alonzo replied with a pointless question. Amelia suddenly stood up and quickly grabbed a pillow, then threw it at Alonzo. Alonzo effortlessly caught it with just one hand, without any difficulty. Alonzo might be one of the richest men in Asia, but Amelia, his younger sister, couldn't care less about that, and I found it amusing. "Duh, of course, you should date her! So, you won't have to bother with my relationship with Reese anymore! Wait, do you even remember her name?" I looked down at my lap. Yeah, Amelia is right. Whether Alonzo's words to me were true or not, he should date someone else to get rid of whatever feelings or perceptions he has towards me. Right, what a smart move! “Yeah, you should!” It was too late; I realized I had said everything I was thinking out loud. Both siblings were now looking at me, Amelia with a surprised expression, while Alonzo remained blank-faced. I chuckled awkwardly. "I mean... Brother Alonzo is already on the due date. He should be getting married by now." Oh, please, Amelia, buy that reason! Please! I sighed in relief when I saw Amelia nodding as if she agreed with what I said. "Mera is right, brother. Why not go on a date with Ruby? Who knows, she might actually become my sister-in-law, right?" Amelia tried to persuade her brother. "Sorry to tell you, sister, but your future sister-in-law is still not yet ready," he firmly said while looking at me. This man… He’s so unbelievable! So shameless! I quickly averted my gaze, hoping that Amelia wouldn't notice her brother's subtle flirtatious gestures. Please, dear God, help me! Amelia snorted. “What?! She’s still not ready yet?! Brother, it's been years, but that's still your excuse whenever I ask you about your love life. Maybe you're just making up a story? Does she even exist?” Amelia asked with a hint of suspicion. "Of course, she is, Amelia. She's just not ready yet, but I'm willing to wait. Years, decades, or even centuries, I don't really care, as long as she falls for me in the end," he said with full of determination. Amelia jumped from her bed and happily hugged her brother while giggling. I glared at Alonzo with intensity as he stared back at me with a mocking smirk on his lips. I'm not a violent thinker, but when it comes to Alonzo... "Oh my God, Alonzo! You're really in love! Finally! I can tell! What's her name... please, pretty please tell me, brother! I want to know her! I might search for her on i********:!" Alonzo chuckled as he stood up, his demeanor cryptic and enigmatic. "Ling. That's as far as information I can give you," he said with a smirk, leaving a lingering sense of curiosity in the air. With cool composure, he casually left the room, his departure leaving an air of mystery and intrigue swirling around us, leaving both me and Amelia in shock. Alonzo... You're slowly driving me insane.
