Chapter 4 • The Path of the Silent

1066 Words
The metal door leading to the left slid shut and locked slowly. Cold white lights flickered on, casting stark illumination over the seven figures inside. A faint scent of disinfectant hung in the air. The walls and floor glinted with a cold, metallic sheen. Lu Zhibai leaned against the wall by the door. She was the first to step into this room—and the only one still moving. The other six milled about, glancing warily at their surroundings. Some tried pounding on the door; others shouted for the system; still others rummaged through the beds. But no response came. She offered no explanations. Instead, she walked slowly, her fingers brushing lightly along the wall cracks, her steps soft and deliberate. It was as if she were listening—or eliminating clues one by one. "Hey, what are you doing?" A voice finally cut through the silence, sharp with suspicion. It was the young man in the black jacket, his eyes guarded, his tone blunt. Lu Zhibai shot him a glance, said nothing, and kept walking. The man cursed under his breath, "Crazy b*tch," but made no move to approach her. Just then, someone held out a bottle of water to her. She didn't take it—instead, she pointed a finger at the floor vent, then pulled her hand away. Gradually, the others' movements grew more restrained. Two people who seemed to know each other huddled in a corner, whispering in low voices;A young woman kept tapping on the metal door, but her knocks slowed to a hesitant rhythm;A sharply dressed teenager was prying apart his bed frame, searching for hidden mechanisms. Still, the system remained silent. Lu Zhibai knelt down and spotted a faint indentation along a floor panel seam. "Wind flows upward," she murmured. She pulled out a curved metal strip and slid it into the gap. The red dot camera overhead flared to life instantly, a beam of cold, judgmental light. The system's voice echoed through the room a split second later—short, sharp, and unforgiving: [Target: Individual Lu Zhibai][Abnormal movement trajectory recording in progress. Added to observation sequence.][Observation Level: Two.] The sudden announcement sent a jolt through the group. "What did she do?""Is she a plant sent by the system?" Wariness spread like wildfire. The young man in the black jacket stepped back, his eyes darting between Lu Zhibai and the others. "Don't get too close," he warned. "The system reacted the second she touched something—who knows if she's a decoy?""She just messed with the floor. Something bad's gonna happen to her soon." Without a word of coordination, everyone took an involuntary step away from her. A silent isolation had begun, creeping into the room unbidden. Lu Zhibai offered no explanation. She retrieved the metal strip, leaned against the wall, and closed her eyes. This was not the calm of composure. It was the silence of someone who refused to engage with anyone or anything. The short-haired girl hesitated, then edged toward Lu Zhibai's side—only to stop abruptly. No words were exchanged, but the message hung in the air: She is not one of us. After a moment, Lu Zhibai opened her eyes again. As the others bickered among themselves, she quietly pried open that floor panel seam. Tucked beneath it was a dusty, faded slip of paper, its ink bleached to near invisibility, leaving only a few fragmented lines. She pulled it out and unfolded it. Don't try to leave. There is no exit here. The price of survival is watching others die. Her expression didn't flicker. Several people had been about to approach her, but the second she pulled out the paper, they stepped back unconsciously. She simply refolded the note and slipped it into her sleeve. But the short-haired girl behind her had caught sight of that final line—and her face drained of color in an instant. "She has a clue," the girl said, her voice soft but laced with sharp anxiety. "She knows what's going to happen next." The words landed like a bucket of cold water on the group. The young man in the black jacket's face darkened as he tried to gauge whether she was telling the truth. He circled around to stand directly in front of Lu Zhibai and said slowly: "You know people are gonna die in the next round, don't you? Did you know this all along?" Lu Zhibai didn't respond. "You're the bait… the system's here because of you.""The system reacted when she touched the floor.""It lit up when she took that note." Another man chipped in, "What if that's not a note? What if it's a hint for some kind of switch?""Is she the one who sets everything off?" someone else asked. As the group buzzed with whispered speculation, the system's voice cut through the noise once more, sudden and cold: [Action Level: One.][System rejection mechanism triggered.] A faint click sounded behind Lu Zhibai. Beneath the wall at her back, an entire section of the air vent panel slid inward, revealing a row of metal heat-dissipating grilles—and with it, a faint but steadily rising high-pitched whine. The temperature around her began to creep upward. The others stared in shock, stepping back instinctively. "She's gonna get thermally processed by the system…!""She… she's gonna get burned alive?!""Hurry—stay away from her!""This is a warning! If we get close, we'll be implicated too!" Lu Zhibai didn't move. She didn't even furrow her brow. She simply stood up slowly, stepped back from the vent, pulled the note out of her sleeve again, and unfolded it once more. "…Watching others die," she whispered the line aloud. The next second, the whine from the vent cut off abruptly. The lights stabilized. The heat dissipated. The system issued a cold notification: [Test reaction collected.][Spatial test continues.] She said nothing else, folded the note away again, and leaned back against the wall. But the way everyone looked at her had changed completely. She wasn't the trigger. She was the marker. Whoever got close to her, the system would track their reactions with greater precision. That was the price of being a silent one—and the way silent ones were used. But she was not the instigator. She was a decoy set by the system. And the real trigger was likely nowhere to be found.
