Unexpected encounter

1583 Words
Imagine a world where you are constantly alone, with only a few family members around you. Well, that has been my life for as long as I can remember. Recently, my dad was transferred to the capital of Rivers State, Port Harcourt, and once again, we had to move. Moving has become a regular occurrence in my life, as I have lived in over 11 different states in the past 18 years. Currently, I find myself in a state of idleness as I await the results of my high school exams (WAEC). With nothing much to do, I decided to go for an early jog one Sunday morning in the estate where my family now resides. The estate was just a few meters away from my home, making it a convenient place for me to exercise. As I was running, I suddenly heard someone calling out to me from behind. At first, I pretended not to hear the voice and continued running, but the calls grew louder and harder to ignore. My curiosity got the better of me, and I eventually decided to turn around and see who was calling me. To my surprise, I saw a light-skinned girl running towards me. She seemed exhausted, gasping for breath as if she was about to collapse. I stopped running and smiled at her, greeting her with a simple "Good morning." I was eager to find out why she had been calling me, as I didn't know anyone in the area and assumed no one knew me either. With a smile on her face, she replied in return and asked if I was new to the environment. I was taken aback by her question, as it wasn't what I had expected. Never￾the less, I simply replied with a "yes" and waited for her to continue the conversation. She then asked for my name, and for a moment, I was tempted to continue my run and leave the interaction behind. However, she stopped me once again, accusing me of being rude for not paying attention to her, Irritated by her sudden accusation, I chose to leave with￾out saying anything further, thinking that would be the last time I would see her. That fateful evening, as the remnants of our delicious family dinner settled, a sudden and unexpected knock on our front door pierced through the tranquil atmosphere. Curiosity piqued, my mom gracefully glided towards the door, the anticipation evident in her eyes. To my utter astonishment, standing on our porch was none other than the same girl from earlier, accompanied by an older woman whom I presumed to be her mother. Our eyes met fleetingly, a mere fleeting connection that left me feeling both intrigued and unsettled. In that fleeting moment, I caught a glimpse of a thousand untold stories, hidden beneath the surface of Amanda's guarded expression. There was an undeniable tension, an unspoken animosity that hung heavy in the air. Their exchange of pleasantries seemed polite enough, but there was an invisible barrier that separated us. It was as if a storm cloud loomed over our encounter, casting a shadow upon what could have been a harmonious introduction. Just as I had resigned myself to slipping away unnoticed, my mom's gentle voice reverberated through the hallway, beckoning me to join them. With a hesitant heart, I approached the unexpected visitors, my foot￾steps weighed down by a sense of apprehension. Amanda's gaze remained resolutely distant, refusing to ac￾knowledge my presence as she curtly mumbled a simple "hi" in response to my greeting. The tension between us was palpable, as if a thick fog of resentment had settled between us, shrouding any possibility of amicability. Feeling a deep sense of discomfort, I excused myself from the strained atmosphere and retreated to the sanctuary of my room. The unanswered questions lingered within my mind, gnawing at my thoughts like a persistent itch. Why did Amanda seem so cold towards me? What had transpired between us to warrant such animosity? The uncertainty gnawed at me, like an insatiable hunger for understanding. It had been less than five days since my encounter with Amanda, and I had made the firm decision to stay away from her in every possible way, even though she happened to be my neighbor. While I was at the supermarket in our neighbor￾hood, purchasing my favorite snacks and groceries, I faced an unexpected problem. My card refused to make the payment. I tried for a good twenty minutes, but the issue persisted. Growing tired and frustrated, I finally de￾cided to give up. It was at that moment that I heard a fa￾miliar voice asking, "How much is it?" I was adamant that I would not allow this girl to pay for my purchases. I told myself that it was unnecessary and informed her that I had it covered. However, her response was rather impolite. She retorted, "I never asked you; I asked the cashier." Her words angered me, and I couldn't help but snap back, telling her to stay away from me and that I didn't need her help. In response, she simply said, "Yes, you do, and I will help you." Before I could finish speaking, just like Jesus paying off the debt of our sins, she paid for my items and walked away. I felt immensely embarrassed by the whole situation. Part of me wanted to run after her and express my anger. but I managed to calm myself down to avoid further problems. As I returned home, I couldn't help but dwell on her words, "You do, I will help you." What did she mean bythat statement? Who does she think she is, acting this way? I pondered these questions repeatedly in my mind. Saturday, also known as the Sabbath, is undoubtedly my favorite day of the week. It's a day that I look forward to spending with my parents at church. However, on this particular Saturday, just as we were about to leave, Amanda, my nemesis, waved towards our car. My dad stopped, and she approached us. The mere sight of her filled me with anger. "Good morning, mam. Can I please join you in the car?" she asked curiously, Without thinking, I blurted out, "Where to?" I was genuinely curious about her sudden interest in joining us. My mom looked at me and explained that she attends the same church as us, and her family also worships there. My dad simply said, "Hop in." Hearing those words shattered my heart. My enemy was now sitting in the same car as me, occupying the backseat. If this wasn't the devil's way of spoiling my day, then what could it be?Amanda settled into the car, attempting to strike upa conversation with me. However, I put on my head￾phones, completely ignoring her. The road to churchsuddenly felt longer than usual as I silently prayed for usto arrive quickly, just so she could get out of my sight. When we finally reached the church, I hastily gotout of the car and found an empty seat to occupy. Aman￾da followed suit, sitting in the seat next to mine. It wasclear that she wanted trouble, and this time, I was determined to give it to her. After a few minutes of silence, Amanda broke the ice, asking, "Hi, what's wrong? Why are you keepingyour face like King Kong?" Unable to contain my anger any longer, I exploded,"What's wrong with you? Did you dream about me?What have I done to deserve this constant annoyance from you? Can't you just leave me alone? Are you somekind of witch? Is it because of the bills you paid the other day? I told you I didn't want your help! Give me your account number, and I'll send you the money. Stop bother￾ing me! We're not the same! Stay away from me and let me fight my own battles. Stop adding to them!"Everyone in the Youth department turned their heads to witness our heated exchange. Consumed by anger, I stormed out of the church. I spent the entire day outside, waiting by the car for my parents after the service. As I observed my mom talking to the Youth leader and coordinator, I knew that I was in trouble. We drove home in silence, and I anxiously awaited a scolding or punishment. However, none came. The silence from my mom only served to further aggravate me. Curious, I mustered the courage to ask her if something was wrong. With a sigh, she confessed that she wasn't feeling well. Relieved, I apologized and was about to retreat to my room when she called me back. She informed me that the Youth leader and coordinator wanted me to act in a drama for the next Youth Day at church. "Me? How? When? I'm still new here, and I don't know anyone or anything," I protested. My mom chuckled and said, "That's exactly what I told them, but they insist. It will keep you busy and help you overcome stage fright." With a mix of anger and resignation, I stomped upstairs to my room. As I sat there, contemplating the idea of acting in a drama, I couldn't help but recall my disastrous experience the last time I stood in front of a crowd. It was a complete disaster, and I ended up fleeing from the stage. I couldn't fathom how I would be able to do it this time. Determined, I decided that I would boldly approach the Youth leader and decline the offer.
