CHAPTER 14 THE GATE OPENS

1352 Words
Night settled over Redclaw. The Pack House stood silent beneath the silver glow of the moon. Inside the war chamber, every torch burned steadily as Alpha Darius Dravenor sat upon the ancient Alpha Throne, his fingers resting calmly against the carved armrest. His expression carried no excitement. Only certainty. Then, The chamber doors opened. A scout hurried inside before dropping onto one knee. "My Alpha." Darius looked up. "Speak." The scout lowered his head. "The signal has been received." Silence. "The Midnight Blade has agreed." Not a single warrior spoke. The room itself seemed to stop breathing. Then... A slow smile appeared on Alpha Darius's face Not relief. Victory. "I knew he would." His voice was quiet. "A father always chooses his blood." He slowly rose from his throne. "The gate will open tomorrow night." He looked toward the elder shaman standing nearby. "Prepare the antidote." The elderly shaman bowed deeply. "Yes, my Alpha." Without another question, he turned and disappeared through the stone corridor. Several warriors exchanged relieved glances. The mission had succeeded. Or so they believed. Then... Alpha Darius spoke again. His next words froze the room. "When the antidote is ready..." He paused. "...you will delay Commander Megan." Confused silence. One warrior frowned. "My Alpha..." He immediately lowered his head again. "...forgive my question." Darius looked at him. "If Commander Megan opens the gate and keeps his word..." "...why delay him?" The room waited. Even the elder commanders quietly lifted their eyes. For the first time... None of them understood their Alpha's decision. Darius slowly descended the stone steps. Each footstep echoed through the chamber. "You ask too many questions." The warrior instantly knelt lower. "My apologies, Alpha." Darius stopped before him. "I did not ask for your understanding." "I asked for your obedience." The room fell silent again. He turned toward another commander. "Assign three warriors." "They will keep Commander Megan occupied." "Only briefly." "Long enough." The commander bowed. "As you command." No one questioned him again. No one dared, because every warrior inside Redclaw understood something. Whenever Alpha Darius revealed only half of his intentions... The other half was always far more dangerous. Across the chamber... Luna Mira watched her mate quietly. The others feared him. She admired him. She walked toward him after the warriors dismissed themselves. "You've done it again." Darius smiled faintly. "My Queen..." Mira rested her hand against his chest. "Every time I think I've seen every side of you..." "You reveal another." There was pride in her voice. Not fear. "You never stop thinking." Darius gently touched her cheek. "A battle is rarely won by the strongest wolf." "It is won by the wolf who forces his enemy to choose." Mira smiled. "And tonight..." "...you made the Midnight Blade choose between loyalty and blood." Their eyes met. Then she whispered into his ears, "You truly are extraordinary." Darius leaned forward until their foreheads touched. "And you..." "...are the only one who understands why." For a brief moment... The ruthless Alpha disappeared. Leaving only a devoted mate. Then his eyes hardened once more. "Tomorrow..." "...history changes." Far away... Inside Midnight Pack... Commander Megan stood alone before the Lunar Sanctum. The sacred stone entrance rested beneath the moonlight, ancient runes glowing faintly across its surface. No warrior could open it. No Beta. No Commander. Only Alpha Kael Blackthorne possessed the blood capable of awakening its gates. Megan already knew that. Yet... Whenever burdens became too heavy... He came here. Not to enter. But to remember who he served. He slowly dropped onto one knee. His head lowered. His palm rested against the cold stone. "Moon Goddess..." His voice barely rose above a whisper. "Forgive me." The wind moved softly across the sacred clearing. "I have never betrayed my Alpha." "And I pray..." "...that after tomorrow..." "...I still won't." He closed his eyes. "My son deserves life." "My Alpha deserves loyalty." "I cannot protect both." Pain filled his chest. "If I must carry this sin..." "...let it fall upon me alone." His breathing slowed. Then another thought entered his mind. "Protect Alpha Kael." "He carries the blood that protects this Pack." "No matter what happens tomorrow..." "...let no enemy touch him." He remained kneeling for several moments before rising. One last look toward the sealed Sanctum. Then he turned away. Never noticing... ...that the moonlight behind him seemed strangely dim. The following night arrived. Exactly as promised. The hidden eastern passage stood silent beneath towering stone walls. Commander Megan waited alone. Every heartbeat felt heavier than the last. Then... Footsteps…. Not many….. Only a few. Figures emerged from the darkness. Rogan. Several warriors. And... An elderly shaman wrapped in weathered robes. Megan frowned. His eyes searched the group again. "Where is Alpha Darius?" Rogan answered calmly. "Our Alpha does not need to come." Megan's gaze shifted toward the old man. "You sent..." "...a shaman?" The elder stepped forward slowly. His voice carried surprising confidence. "I am enough." Something felt wrong….. Very wrong. This wasn't what Megan expected. He had prepared himself to face Redclaw's fiercest warriors. Perhaps even Darius himself. Instead... An old healer stood before him. Megan narrowed his eyes. "What exactly are you planning?" The old shaman smiled. "Questions are dangerous tonight." "You only need to honor your promise." Megan hesitated. Then... The elder removed his hood. His wrinkled fingers slowly reached toward his own face. The air changed. The moonlight trembled. Ancient symbols began circling around him. Megan instinctively stepped backward. "What!" Before he could finish... The old skin began dissolving like smoke. The bent posture straightened. Grey hair darkened. Wrinkles vanished. The worn robes flowed like liquid shadows before reshaping themselves into elegant garments. Within seconds... The elderly shaman was gone. Standing before Commander Megan... ...was a breathtakingly beautiful young woman. Long silver-black hair cascaded over her shoulders. Her amber eyes glowed unnaturally beneath the moonlight. Every movement carried impossible grace. She smiled…. Not kindly…. Knowingly. Commander Megan stared. For the first time in years... The Midnight Blade was genuinely caught off guard. His hand instinctively moved toward his sword. "What..." His voice hardened. "...are you?" The woman lifted one elegant finger. "Gentle, Commander." She smiled again. "My appearance changes." "My purpose does not." Megan's instincts screamed. Everything about this woman felt wrong. Not her beauty. Her presence. She smelled unfamiliar. Ancient….. Hidden. "What game is this?" The woman merely tilted her head. "You promised to open the gate." "Nothing more." She stepped closer. "So..." "...keep your promise." She whispered closer. After a long silence... Commander Megan unlocked the hidden eastern entrance. The ancient stone shifted. A narrow passage slowly opened. The woman walked forward without hesitation. Halfway through... They encountered two Midnight Pack members making their routine patrol. A senior maiden. And one pack warrior. Both immediately bowed. "Commander Megan." Then... The maiden suddenly froze. Her nose twitched. She slowly lifted her head. Confusion crossed her face. She looked toward the mysterious woman. Then toward Megan. Then the warrior said; "Commander..." "There is..." He hesitated. "...an unfamiliar scent." The accompanying warrior and maidens instantly stiffened. Their wolf sensed it too. "This isn't one of ours." Megan's heartbeat pounded. For a fraction of a second... Everything threatened to collapse. Then his expression remained perfectly calm. "She was summoned." The warrior blinked. "For royal duties." "My authorization." The two exchanged uncertain glances. Commander Megan had never lied. Not once. If he said she had permission... Who were they to question him? The maiden lowered her head. "As you command, Commander." They stepped aside. The beautiful woman walked past them gracefully. As she crossed deeper into Midnight Pack territory... A slow, almost invisible smile curved across her lips. Not a smile of gratitude. A smile of arrival. A smile that belonged to someone who had just stepped exactly where she intended to be. Behind her... Comma nder Megan watched in growing unease. For the first time... He felt that perhaps he had not opened a gate... He had opened something far worse. And somewhere beyond the silent corridors of Midnight... A game far older than loyalty... ...Had finally entered the Blackthorne Pack House.
