CHAPTER 13_THE FIRST LOCK

1226 Words
THE FIRST LOCK The cries had grown weaker. Inside the secluded chamber hidden within the Midnight Pack House, silence had become more terrifying than screams. Viera sat beside the small wooden cradle, her trembling hands gently brushing across her son's forehead. Little Raegan. Only yesterday, his cries had filled the room with life. Now... Each breath seemed to fight against something invisible. His tiny chest rose... Then struggled... Then rose again. Dark veins had begun spreading beneath his fragile skin like shadows creeping through moonlight. Every breath looked painfully earned. Viera's heart was shattered. "No..." She pulled him gently into her arms. "No... please..." Her tears fell freely onto the baby's tiny face. "You are stronger than this..." "You carry your father's blood." "You are the son of Midnight's greatest warrior..." "You cannot leave me..." The child answered only with another weak cry. Outside the chamber... Megan stood motionless. His fists remained clenched so tightly that blood trickled from his palms. The Midnight Blade. The warrior who had stood before entire battle lines without trembling. The warrior feared across neighboring packs. The warrior who had never lost control. Today... He could do nothing. No sword could cut this enemy. No strength could defeat it. No battle formation could save his son. His breathing became heavier. For the first time in many years... Commander Megan felt helpless. Completely helpless. Slowly... The chamber door opened. Viera stepped out carrying Raegan carefully against her chest. The moment Megan saw his son's face... His heart sank. The child looked even weaker. The poison was winning. Without another word... He walked toward them. His shaking fingers touched his son's tiny hand. It barely moved. A long silence followed. Then... Something inside him finally broke. His knees nearly gave way. "I cannot lose him..." His voice cracked. "I cannot..." Viera stared at him. She had seen Megan wounded. Covered in blood. Standing after impossible battles. But never... Never like this. Tears escaped his eyes. Not the tears of defeat. The tears of a father. "I don't know what to do..." His shoulders trembled. "I've fought wolves... I've defended this pack... I've stood beside Alpha Kael through every war..." His breathing faltered. "But I cannot save my own son." Viera's own tears slowed. She stepped closer. One hand gently touched his face. "Megan..." He looked at her. "What happened?" "You were supposed to give me strength." "You were supposed to tell me everything would be alright." She searched his eyes. "But you're breaking..." Megan closed his eyes. Then... He told her everything. Every word spoken in the forest. Every threat….. Every demand…… Every condition. The poison. The antidote. The proposal. When he finished... Silence swallowed the room. Viera slowly looked down at the child. "So..." "They poisoned our son..." "So they could poison your loyalty." Megan nodded. "I think..." His voice was barely above a whisper. "I have to tell Alpha Kael." "I cannot carry this alone." "I cannot betray my Alpha." For several seconds... Viera said nothing. Then she slowly shook her head. "No." Megan looked at her. "No?" She wiped away her tears. "You know your Alpha better than anyone." "He is a good Alpha." " A just Alpha." "He will comfort you." "He will grieve with you." "He may even promise to avenge our son." Her voice softened. "But after that..." She paused. "He will choose the pack." Megan lowered his eyes. She continued quietly. "You know he will." "He always places the pack before himself." "The future before emotion." "The mission before personal desire." Her words struck him harder than any weapon, because they were true. Viera looked directly into his eyes. "He will remind you that Alora is your bonded mate." "That she can still bear your heirs." Her voice finally broke. "But..." "What about me?" Fresh tears streamed down her cheeks. "What happens to me after Raegan is gone?" "Megan..." "Am I the one destined to lose everything?" "You told me you loved me." "You promised I wasn't just a mistake." "So tell me..." "Does our love end with our son's last breath?" Megan pulled her into his arms. "It won't." "It never will." She buried her face against his chest. "No..." "It will." "You know your Alpha." "He already knows I'm your greatest weakness." "He accepted me because of this child." "He respected your love because another life depended on it." "But once Raegan is gone..." Her breathing shook. "He will separate us." "He won't do it out of cruelty." "He'll do it because he'll believe it's the only way to protect you... and the pack." "He'll send me away." "Far from Midnight." "So you can become only the Midnight Blade again." "So nothing can ever weaken you." Megan closed his eyes. Every word... Was exactly what Alpha Kael would do. Not because Kael lacked compassion. But because Kael always chose what preserved the pack. Duty before desire. Always. Viera slowly lifted her head. "I cannot lose you." "Megan..." "I refuse to lose both my son... and the man I love." Silence settled between them. Then... She spoke again. "You said they only asked for one thing." Megan nodded slowly. "They want me to open the Pack House." She took a slow breath. "Then do it.” His head snapped upward. "What?" "They're giving you the antidote." "Open it." Megan stared at her. "Have you lost your mind?" "They'll invade Midnight." She shook her head. "No." "They'll try." Her eyes burned with certainty. "This is Midnight." "The moment an outsider crosses our borders, every warrior feels it." "Before Alpha Kael's aura even descends..." "The sentries will know." "The warriors will know." "The Beta guards of yours will know." "Even we maidens… The omegas…. " She placed a hand over her heart. "...can sense when a foreign wolf enters the Pack House." "Their scent doesn't belong." "The entire territory rejects them." Her voice grew stronger. "And if somehow they escape all of that..." She smiled faintly. "Your Alpha carries the Blackthorn blood." "The blood no invading wolf has ever overcome." "His aura alone has broken warriors before swords were ever drawn." "He won't lose." "He cannot." Megan remained silent. She stepped closer. "Double the night patrol." "Triple the guards." "Prepare secretly." "Take the antidote." "Save our son." "And let Alpha Kael destroy whoever enters." His breathing slowed. The plan... It sounded possible. It sounded... Safe. He looked toward the cradle. Toward Raegan. Then back at Viera. "What if Alpha Kael discovers I opened the gate?" Viera gently cupped his face. "He won't." "Because before anyone reaches the heart of Midnight..." "They'll already be dead." A long silence followed. Finally... Megan nodded. Slowly. Almost unwillingly. "I'll do it." Viera embraced him tightly. Neither of them noticed... That somewhere beyond Midnight's borders... Alpha Darius had already anticipated every thought now passing through Megan's mind. He had never expected to overpower Alpha Kael. He had never intended to defeat Midnight's warriors through numbers. No... His true objective had always lain far beyond the gates. Far beyond the battle. Far beyond the antidote. And as the moon c limbed higher over both packs... The first lock guarding Midnight's future had quietly begun to turn. The gate had not opened yet... But soon... It would. And when it did... It would not be soldiers who entered first. It would be destiny itself.
