CHAPTER 9_THE PRICE OF DUTY

969 Words
THE PRICE OF DUTY The grand hall had long fallen silent. The confrontation with Redclaw was over. Alpha Darius had left Midnight carrying the face of an innocent man. Yet Alpha Kael Blackthorne remained seated upon his throne. Still….. Silent….. Thinking. The hall was empty except for one man. Commander Megan. The warrior stood several steps below the throne, waiting. Kael's gaze remained fixed ahead. For several moments, neither spoke. Then finally, "What have you done, Megan?" The words landed heavily. Not with anger. Not with rage, but with disappointment. The kind that cut deeper than punishment. Megan lowered his head. "My Alpha..." Kael rose slowly from his seat. His powerful presence filled the chamber. "In two days..." His voice hardened. "In two days, you are supposed to mark Alora." Silence. "The daughter of Shaman Rhema." Another pause. "The alliance I spent years building." Kael stepped forward. "The alliance was meant to strengthen Midnight for generations." His eyes narrowed. "And now an Omega?" The words echoed through the hall. For the first time since Helen's confession, emotion flashed across his face. Not fear , not shame….. Pain. "It's not betrayal, my Alpha." Kael remained silent. "It's not treason." Megan's voice grew stronger. "It's not rebellion." A pause. Then he looked directly at his Alpha. "It's love." The chamber became quiet. Kael stared at him. Megan continued. "I never planned this." His jaw tightened. "I never sought to disrespect your vision." His voice lowered. "But I loved her." Silence. The warrior who had faced armies now struggled to find words. "Every battle I fought..." "Every victory I earned..." "I did for Midnight." His eyes darkened. "But Viera..." A small pause. "She's capable of making a warrior lay down his blade ." Kael looked away. For a brief moment, memories surfaced. Seraphine. His Luna…… His mate. The one person capable of turning an Alpha into something beyond a ruler. The one weakness he would gladly die protecting. And because of that... He understood. Which somehow made this harder. Kael closed his eyes briefly. Then opened them again. Stronger….. Colder. More Alpha than man. "Love does not erase duty." The words struck like a hammer. Megan lowered his gaze. Kael continued. "The territory comes first." A pause. "The alliance proceeds." Another. "You will mark Alora." The hall felt colder. Megan's throat tightened. "My Alpha..." Kael's voice sharpened. "Midnight cannot afford weakness." Silence. "The future of this kingdom cannot be sacrificed because a warrior fell in love." Megan looked away. Pain flashed briefly across his face. But he nodded, because he already knew. "Yes, my Alpha." Kael studied him. "You will honor the alliance." "Yes, my Alpha." A longer pause. The answer sounded more like surrender than obedience. Kael looked away. The conversation was over. But neither man felt victorious, because some battles left wounds no blade could create. Two days later... The sacred grounds of Midnight stood illuminated beneath the moon. Ancient fires burned around the ceremonial circle. Warriors gathered. Elders watched. The air carried expectations. Tonight was not merely a union. It was a political bond. A spiritual alliance. A future carefully crafted by generations. At the center stood Megan. Dressed in ceremonial black. Strong….. Unshaken. The image of Midnight's perfect warrior. Yet inside... Nothing felt whole. Across from him stood Alora. Daughter of Shaman Rhema. Beautiful…… Elegant. Power radiated from her spiritual bloodline. She smiled softly. A woman fulfilling her destiny. The elders began chanting. Ancient words filled the air. Moonlight seemed to brighten above them. The sacred ritual had begun. Shaman Rhema stepped forward. "The Moon Goddess bears witness." The gathering lowered their heads. "The bond formed tonight shall strengthen Midnight for generations." A murmur spread through the crowd. Everything was proceeding exactly as planned. Exactly as Alpha Kael intended. Exactly as Midnight required. Then came the final step. The marking. Alora stepped closer. Megan looked at her. A good woman. A worthy woman. A woman who deserved more than a divided heart Yet destiny had never asked for his opinion. The ritual demanded completion. Slowly, Megan lowered his head. And marked her. A pulse of energy exploded outward. The ceremonial grounds shook. Gasps echoed around the circle. Silver light surged through the air. Power…….. Ancient…. Spiritual…. Primal. The alliance had been sealed. The crowd erupted in celebration. Midnight had gained more strength. The future had been secured. Yet standing in the middle of the cheers... Megan felt something strange. The bond existed. The power existed. But something was missing. Something deep inside him remained silent. Empty. And for reasons he could not explain... That frightened him. Far from the celebration... Far beyond the lights of Midnight... A small cottage stood alone beneath the moon. Viera sat by the window. Silent…… Broken. The distant sounds of celebration carried through the night wind. She did not need anyone to tell her what they meant. She already knew. The ceremony had happened. The marking was complete. Megan belonged to another woman now. Slowly, she placed a trembling hand against her stomach. Their child moved beneath her touch. A small reminder that she was not alone. Yet it did little to ease the ache in her chest. Tears streamed silently down her cheeks. Not because she hated Megan. Not because she blamed him. But because she finally understood something painful. Love was not always enough. Outside... The moonlight touched the trees. The night remained peaceful. But deep within the Forbidden Borderlands... Something stirred. Something ancient. Something forgotten. For centuries, it had remained dormant. Waiting…. Watching. Sleeping beneath stone and time. And for the first time in generations... A fain t c***k appeared across its surface. As though something had sensed a bloodline that should no longer exist. As though something was awakening. Waiting... For the birth of the last heir of Midnight.
