THE SHADOWS BEHIND THE SMILE The celebration inside Midnight continued long after Alpha Kael left the warriors with his warning. But his words remained. A true enemy does not always come with a sword. Sometimes they come wearing a familiar face. The great doors of the hall opened again. This time, a different presence entered. Alpha Darius Dravenor of the Redclaw Pack. The warriors immediately noticed him. Not because they feared him. But because everyone knew the history between the two strongest packs. Darius stepped inside with a calm smile, his eyes moving across the hall. The order. The discipline. The warriors standing like one body. Every soldier carried the strength of someone who had been forged by years of training. He looked impressed. “Remarkable,” Darius said. Kael turned toward him. “You sound surprised.” Darius laughed softly. “Not surprised. Just reminded.” He walked closer, studying the warriors. “Midnight has always been different.” His gaze moved to the towering structure around them. “The way your warriors move. The way they obey. The way this kingdom was built…” A small smile appeared on his lips. “One day, I intend to build something beyond this.” The hall became quiet. Some warriors frowned. A few exchanged glances. But Darius only continued walking slowly, as if the silence itself belonged to him. He touched the edge of a carved pillar, observing it, like a man studying future conquest. “So precise,” he murmured. “So controlled.” Kael watched him carefully. “You admire what you plan to surpass.” Darius paused. For a moment, their eyes met. Then he smiled again. “Admiration and ambition are not enemies, Kael.” A pause. “Sometimes they are the same thing.” The air between them shifted. Not hostile…. Not yet. But heavy enough to be felt by every warrior in the hall. Megan, standing behind Kael, narrowed his eyes slightly. Something about Darius’s tone did not sit right. It was too calm….. too measured. Like a man studying a future battlefield. Kael noticed Megan’s reaction. A subtle lift of his hand….. stay calm. Megan lowered his gaze immediately. But his instincts remained alert. Darius noticed the exchange. His eyes flicked briefly toward Megan. “Your warriors are disciplined,” he said casually. Kael replied, “They are loyal.” Darius smiled. “Loyalty is strong.” A pause. “Until it is tested.” The words landed quietly, but not lightly. Kael did not react. Neither did Seraphine, who had now stepped into the hall beside him. But Megan felt it. A pressure behind the words. Like a hidden meaning wrapped inside a compliment. Darius then clapped his hands once. A soft sound. “Anyway,” he said, shifting tone easily, “I hope Midnight continues to thrive.” He turned slightly toward Kael. Darius noticed the change in the warriors’ expressions and immediately laughed softly. “Oh, forgive me.” His eyes swept across the hall. “It was only a sense of humor, warriors of the Midnight Pack.” The tension slowly eased as some warriors relaxed. Darius smiled, looking around the grand hall once more. “After all… what is there not to admire about a pack like this?” His gaze moved over the disciplined warriors, the ancient walls, and the strength built into every corner of Midnight. “Your structure. Your loyalty. Your power.” A small chuckle escaped him. “Even a blind man could see why the kingdom speaks so highly of Midnight.” Kael watched him carefully. Darius had always been good with words. Too good. But before Kael could respond, Darius turned his attention back to him. “Alpha Kael, my friend…” He paused. “Don’t you think it is time we go deeper?” Kael raised an eyebrow. “Deeper?” Darius nodded. “For years, our packs have measured strength through reputation, stories, and history.” He glanced toward the warriors. “But a kingdom’s greatness is not measured by its Alpha alone.” The hall became quiet again. “It is measured by the strength of those who stand beside him.” Kael’s expression remained calm. “And what exactly are you suggesting?” Darius smiled. “A challenge.” The word settled into the hall. “Not a war. Not a conflict between packs.” He stepped forward. “A test.” Behind Kael, Megan’s attention sharpened. A challenge from Redclaw was never just a simple challenge. Before Darius could continue ,the great doors opened. A warrior rushed inside. “Commander Megan.” The room turned. Megan looked at him. “What is it?” The warrior bowed. “An urgent matter requires your attention.” Megan glanced toward Kael. The Alpha gave a slight nod. “Go.” Megan lowered his head. “Yes, my Alpha.” As he turned to leave, his eyes met Darius’s for a brief moment. And for reasons he could not explain… Megan felt as if the challenge had already begun. Then he turned away. Deep within the lower quarters of Midnight, the air was colder. Quieter……. Hidden. Megan walked through the narrow passageways until he reached a dimly lit chamber. A place far from warriors. Far from authority. A place where titles did not exist….. only truth. Viera stood waiting. She looked different tonight….. not just nervous….. terrified. Her hands were clenched tightly together, as if holding herself together by force. “Megan…” Her voice broke slightly when she saw him. He stepped closer immediately. “What happened?” She hesitated. Looked down. Then back at him. “I shouldn’t have called you…” Megan frowned. “Viera.” Her breath trembled. “I tried to be strong.” Silence. “But I can’t hide it anymore.” Megan’s heart tightened. “What are you saying?” Her hand slowly moved to her stomach. And the moment he saw it… Everything inside him froze. “I’m scared,” she whispered. Megan stepped closer. His voice dropped. “Why are you scared?” Tears filled her eyes now. “Because I don’t know what this means for us.” A pause. Then: “I’m pregnant.” The world stopped. Even the air seemed to hold its breath. Megan stared at her. For a long moment, he said nothing. Then slowly… a faint smile formed on his face. Real…. Raw…… Uncontrolled, because this was not just news. This was life. His child. The woman he loved. A future he never allowed himself to imagine. He stepped closer and gently touched her face. “You are sure?” She nodded through tears. “Yes.” A silence followed. A fragile peace. But it did not last, because Megan’s expression slowly changed. The smile faded, not because of fear. But because of reality returning like a blade. Kael had already chosen his path for him. The marriage to Alora. The daughter of their great shaman,Rhema. The political and spiritual alliance that could strengthen deeper, the mighty Midnight pack. The future of Midnight. Everything planned….. everything controlled. And now… Everything was breaking. Viera watched his face carefully. “What will happen now?” Megan did not answer immediately, because for the first time in his life… The strongest warrior of Midnight had no command. No strategy…. No answer….. Only silence. Then, Far above them, in the palace… A bell rang. Not a celebration bell. A summoning bell. Megan’s head snapped upward. Viera stiffened. “What is that?” Footsteps echoed in the distance. Running….. voices rising. A warrior burst into the corridor. “Commander Megan!” He turned sharply. “What is it?” The warrior was breathing hard. “The Alpha requests all commanders immediately.” A pause. Then the warrior added: “You as the main commander is being summoned.” Megan’s e xpression hardened instantly. Viera grabbed his arm. “Megan…..” He looked at her once. A final glance. Then whispered: “Stay here.” And turned away. Running back into the darkness of Midnight. But behind him… Viera stood frozen. Her hand over her stomach, because something inside her told her…. This was only the beginning. And somewhere far beyond the walls of Midnight… someone had already stepped inside.
