Chapter 24: The Blood They Came For

1139 Words
The Royal Pack House had become a battlefield. Steel screamed against steel. The sacred halls that had witnessed generations of Blackthorne Alphas now echoed with the cries of dying wolves. Red Claw warriors continued pouring through the breached entrances opened by the disguised spiritual shaman, their crimson banners stained darker by the blood they spilled. Bodies covered the polished stone floors. Smoke curled toward the high ceiling. Blood ran through ancient carvings like crimson rivers. Yet amid the slaughter... A new sound rolled across Midnight Territory. A howl. Deep….. Powerful…… Ancient. Then another…….. And another. Within seconds, countless wolves answered. The sound became a tidal wave. Every surviving Red Claw warrior froze. One slowly turned toward the shattered entrance. "They're here..." Another swallowed hard. "The Midnight warriors..." A third looked beyond the walls where dust rose into the moonlit sky. "There are too many!" Outside the Royal Pack House, thousands of Midnight wolves stormed toward their Alpha's sanctuary. No horn had summoned them. No messenger had ridden across the territory. No command had been issued. They had simply felt it. Every wolf within Midnight carried a fragment of their Alpha's protective aura. Now that shield was weakening. Every instinct screamed the same truth. Protect your Alpha. Veteran warriors. Young hunters. Border guards. Even injured wolves wrapped in fresh bandages charged toward the Royal Pack House without hesitation. Some limped. Some bled. None slowed. Tonight... Every wolf belonged on the battlefield. Inside... The clash only intensified. The narrow corridors became killing grounds. Midnight warriors arriving from outside collided head-on with the invading Red Claw forces still flooding inward. The Royal Pack House itself trembled beneath the weight of war. Every chamber became another battlefield. Every doorway became another last stand. Neither side yielded. Near the ancient entrance of the Lunar Sanctum... Alpha Darius stood before the colossal stone seal. Its ancient runes pulsed softly beneath the moonlight. The spiritual shaman, still disguised beneath borrowed flesh, stepped beside him. "My Alpha." Darius never looked away from the glowing entrance. "The blood." The shaman bowed. "The Sanctum will not answer strength." "It will not answer another Alpha." "It recognizes only the Blackthorne covenant." Silence settled between them. "The sacred cycle has not yet come." "Then it remains closed." Darius folded his arms. "And if I refuse to wait?" The shaman answered carefully. "There is one exception." He raised his eyes toward the dying Alpha Kael. "Only the blood of a living Blackthorne Alpha may awaken the Sanctum before its appointed time." Darius slowly followed his gaze. His eyes settled upon Kael. The dying Alpha remained on one knee. Blood streamed from the wound that had nearly claimed his life. His breathing had grown shallow. The poison still ravaged his body. Yet somehow... His presence refused to disappear. Darius' expression slowly changed. Until now... His purpose had been simple. Destroy Kael. Break Midnight. Claim victory. Now... Everything had changed. The Sanctum. That was the true prize. He smiled, not from amusement... But from realization. "So..." "The greatest treasure of Midnight..." "...was never this territory." "It was hidden behind him all along." The shaman lowered his head. "Yes, my Alpha." "If the Sanctum becomes yours..." "The future belongs to Red Claw." Darius' gaze hardened. "Then killing Kael can wait." He slowly drew his sword. "I need only his blood." Several steps away... Commander Megan heard every word. His heartbeat stopped. Not because of fear. But because understanding struck him all at once. This invasion... This betrayal... This massacre... None of it had been about taking land. It had never been about revenge. It had been about the Lunar Sanctum. The sacred inheritance entrusted only to the Blackthorne bloodline. If Darius reached it... Everything Kael had protected... Every generation before him... Would fall. Commander Megan tightened his grip around Midnight. His knuckles whitened. No. Not while he still breathed. Behind him... Alpha Kael struggled to remain conscious. His vision blurred. The poison had spread beyond anything his mighty wolf could suppress. Still... His instincts remained alive. He saw Darius moving. He understood. Even in death... They wanted something more from him. His blood. A faint growl escaped his lips. Commander Megan heard it. Without turning around... He spoke quietly. "My Alpha..." "I understand." Outside the Sanctum chamber... The battle raged even harder. The arriving Midnight reinforcements slammed into the invading Red Claw warriors with terrifying force. Entire walls shook beneath exploding wolf auras. Yet the narrow royal corridors worked against them. Collapsed pillars. Broken staircases. Bodies piled upon one another. The passage leading toward the Sanctum had become a choke point. The reinforcements could not break through fast enough. Every second bought Darius another chance. Rogan slowly forced himself upright. Blood covered nearly every inch of his body. His wounds still burned from Commander Megan's blade. He watched the Midnight Blade walk forward. One step. Another. Each footstep echoed across the silent chamber. No one dared interrupt him. Not Red Claw……. Not Midnight. The battle itself seemed to hesitate. Even Darius remained still. Commander Megan stopped directly between Alpha Kael... And Alpha Darius. Like a living fortress. The silver glow inside his eyes deepened. His wolf answered. A crushing aura exploded outward. Not violent.. Not reckless….. Controlled. Cold enough to make seasoned warriors shiver. Several wounded Red Claw warriors instinctively stumbled backward. One dropped his sword entirely. Another struggled just to breathe. Even Rogan... The strongest warrior of Red Claw... Felt his heartbeat quicken. His wolf lowered its head instinctively. "...His aura..." Rogan whispered. "It has grown..." The disguised shaman's pupils narrowed. "Impossible..." "This isn't merely a Commander's wolf..." Darius stared silently. For the first time that night... He truly looked at the man standing before him. Not as Kael's subordinate. But as Midnight's greatest shield. The warrior history would remember. Commander Megan slowly raised Midnight. The black blade reflected the moonlight like liquid darkness. His voice rang through the ruined Royal Pack House. Steady….. Absolute. "You came into my home." "You poisoned my Alpha." "You slaughtered my brothers." "You stained sacred ground with Midnight blood." He took one final step. His blade pointed directly at Alpha Darius. "If you seek one more drop..." Silence answered him. "...of my Alpha's blood..." Even the warriors still locked in combat in the chamber seemed to pause. The ancient runes of the Lunar Sanctum pulsed brighter. Commander Megan's silver eyes burned with unbreakable resolve. His grip tightened around Midnight. Then his final words crashed thro ugh the chamber like thunder. "...then empty every drop of mine first." Silence. Absolute silence. No warrior moved. No sword rose. No breath seemed to exist. Only the ancient runes of the Lunar Sanctum continued glowing softly... As though the Moon Goddess herself had paused to witness whether Commander Megan's oath... ...or Alpha Darius' ambition... would decide the fate of the Blackthorne bloodline
