The Enemy of My Enemy

1641 Words
The peaceful Roman morning vanished in a heartbeat, swallowed by a deafening symphony of violence. Alessandro shoved Seraphina violently behind the armored just as a hail of bullets slammed into the chassis, sparking violently against the thick steel plate. “Stay down,” he commanded, his voice a low, gravelly rasp that cut right through the ringing in her ears. She didn't argue. Crouching low on the gravel, Seraphina clutched her head as the fabric of her wedding gown tangled around her knees. Her entire body trembled with a terrifying, bone-deep realization: This wasn’t the life she knew. Yesterday, she had been worrying about floral arrangements and seating charts. Today, she was a fugitive, hiding in the dirt behind a notorious Mafia boss while masked men tried to tear them to pieces. “Boss!” A guard dived over the hood of the vehicle, scattering gravel as he slid next to Alessandro. Blood dripped from a shallow graze on his cheek. “There are at least twenty of them! They came heavy—automatic weapons, tactical gear!” Alessandro didn't even blink. With fluid, terrifyingly steady hands, he ejected an empty magazine from his pistol, slapped a fresh one home, and racked the slide. Click-clack. The sound was crisp, clinical, and completely devoid of panic. “Close the inner gates,” Alessandro ordered calmly. “They’ve already breached the first security checkpoint, Don Alessandro!” “Then don’t let them reach the house. Funnel them into the courtyard and cross-choke them.” His voice never rose. It never shook. It was almost more terrifying than the gunfire itself—a man completely at home in the center of a slaughterhouse. The guards immediately scattered to obey. No one questioned him. No one hesitated. Seraphina watched in absolute disbelief. In the Romano household, loyalty was bought with fear and sustained by threats. But here? These men looked at Alessandro as if he were an unyielding shield. He wasn't just feared; he was deeply, implicitly trusted. Bullets continued to ricochet across the courtyard, chewing up the manicured hedges and shattering the stone facade of the villa. A sharp cry echoed to her left. One of Alessandro’s men collapsed beside the central marble fountain, the water turning a sickening pink. Before she could gasp, another soldier instantly lunged out from cover, dragging his wounded brother into the safety of an archway. No one stopped fighting. No one panicked. Alessandro glanced down at her, his cold grey eyes sweeping over her wide, terrified face. “When I tell you to move… you run for the side door. Do you understand?” Seraphina gripped his tailored sleeve, a sudden surge of adrenaline masking her terror. “I’m not leaving you out here!” His eyes narrowed into twin slits of flint. “That wasn’t a suggestion, Seraphina.” Before she could argue, a violent explosion rocked the entrance of the estate. The reinforced outer gates burst inward, torn from their hinges. Three black, armored SUVs tore into the courtyard, their tires screeching as they drifted into a defensive line. Masked gunmen poured out of the side doors, laying down a devastating wall of suppressive fire. “The Morettis!” someone shouted over the din. “They’re inside the perimeter!” Alessandro didn't flinch. He stepped out from behind the SUV, raising his pistol with a rigid, unbreakable stance. Pop. Pop. Pop. Three distinct shots echoed through the chaotic courtyard. Three attackers dropped instantly to the gravel, dead before they could even level their assault rifles. Seraphina stared up at him in sheer awe. His aim was flawless. His face remained completely expressionless, his jaw locked tight. To Alessandro De Luca, taking a human life was as routine as turning a page in a ledger. Suddenly, a firm hand clamped down on her shoulder. Seraphina shrieked, flinching violently away. “It’s me! It’s okay!” A young woman crouched beside her in the smoke. She looked no older than twenty-five, with a sharp, elegant face and dark hair pulled back into a sleek ponytail. Despite the bullets biting into the stone above their heads, her expression was remarkably composed. “I’m Bianca,” she said, her voice clear and steady. Seraphina blinked, her chest heaving. “Bianca?” “Bianca De Luca.” The woman offered a small, reassuring smile that briefly softened her sharp features. “I’m Alessandro’s sister.” Seraphina looked from Bianca to Alessandro. The resemblance was striking—the same high, aristocratic cheekbones, the same unyielding, striking gaze. “You need to come with me right now,” Bianca said, grabbing Seraphina’s arm. “I can’t leave him—he's standing right in the open!” Bianca glanced toward her brother, then looked back at Seraphina with a fierce intensity. “You’ll only distract him. If you're out here, he's a target. Move!” Reluctantly, the weight of logic broke through Seraphina’s panic. She nodded. Keeping low, the two women sprinted across the exposed stone walkway, their heels clicking furiously until they darted through a heavy, reinforced steel side entrance. The moment the heavy door slammed shut, the deafening roar of the firefight muted to a low, rhythmic thudding. Inside, the villa looked less like a luxury estate and more like a high-tech military command center. Security monitors lined the stone walls of the corridor, flashing with real-time thermal feeds of the courtyard. Armed guards moved with practiced efficiency through the halls, and a medical team was already setting up triage equipment on a long oak table. No one looked surprised. It was chillingly obvious that attacks like this were simply a hazard of the De Luca lifestyle. Bianca led her into a fortified, windowless holding room and locked the door. “You’ll be safe in here. The walls are reinforced concrete.” Seraphina collapsed onto a leather sofa, her breath catching as she smoothed down her dirt-stained dress. “This isn’t normal. None of this is normal.” Bianca let out a soft, hollow laugh, leaning against the wall with her arms crossed. “No. I suppose it isn’t. But it’s our normal.” A heavy, suffocating silence settled between them, broken only by the distant, muffled thud-thud-thud of gunfire outside. Finally, Seraphina looked up, her voice small. “Is Alessandro always like this?” “Like what?” “So…” She struggled to find a word that didn't sound insulting to the man who had just saved her life. “…so emotionless. Like he’s made of stone.” Bianca’s expression softened, a shadow of genuine sadness crossing her eyes. “He wasn’t always. When we were younger, he actually used to laugh. But—” Before Bianca could finish the sentence, the heavy electronic lock on the door clicked, and it swung open. Matteo, one of Alessandro's top captains, stepped into the room. His white dress shirt was heavily smeared with dark crimson blood, and his breathing was heavy. Seraphina instantly stood up, her heart leaping into her throat. “Is he hurt? Is Alessandro—?” Matteo paused, looking genuinely surprised by the sheer panic in her voice. A slow, respectful nod followed. “The Boss secured the perimeter, principessa. Not a single scratch on him. The Morettis are completely wiped out.” Seraphina released a ragged breath she hadn’t realized she was holding, sinking slightly back into the couch. Why do I care? she asked herself, a wave of confusion washing over her. He kidnapped me. He’s a monster. Why am I relieved he’s alive? Before she could process the thought, another guard rushed to the doorway, his face grim. “Matteo. Bianca. The Boss wants everyone in the war room immediately.” Bianca frowned, her posture straightening. “Why? If the threat is cleared, what’s the emergency?” The guard looked directly at Seraphina, his eyes filled with a heavy, ominous pity. “They cleared the bodies in the courtyard. They found something on one of the hitmen.” Minutes later, Seraphina found herself being guided by Bianca and Matteo into a massive, high-tech conference room deep within the villa. Maps of Europe’s shipping ports covered the walls, and live security feeds played across a dozen flat screens. Alessandro stood at the head of the long mahogany table. He had discarded his suit jacket, his white shirt cuffs rolled up to his forearms, a faint dusting of ash on his skin. He looked up the moment she entered, his piercing grey eyes locking onto hers. “Come here,” he muttered. She walked over cautiously, her hands balled into the fabric of her skirt. Without a single word, Alessandro slid a heavy plastic evidence folder across the polished wood toward her. “Open it.” Seraphina hesitated, then slowly pulled the contents out. It was a crystal-clear, high-resolution still image captured by the estate’s outer security cameras just before the firefight began. It showed one of the masked gunmen jumping from an SUV. During the tactical breach, his ballistic balaclava had caught on a jagged piece of the iron gate, ripping down to reveal his face entirely to the lens. Seraphina’s hands began to shake violently. The room seemed to tilt beneath her feet. “No…” her voice cracked, a horrifying, choking sound. “No, it can’t be. It’s impossible.” Alessandro’s unyielding gaze never left her face. “You recognize him.” She nodded slowly, a single, scalding tear spilling over her lashes. The face in the photograph belonged to someone she had grown up with. Someone she had loved her entire life. Someone who was supposed to be mourning her kidnapping. She struggled to force the air past her throat to finish the sentence. “…He’s my brother. Giovanni.” The war room fell into a dead, suffocating silence. End of Episode 3
