CHAPTER TWENTY: NEW SPACES

717 Words
Ava woke to the soft light of morning filtering through the blinds. The pale gold touched the edges of her sheets, and for a moment, she just lay there, listening to the faint hum of the city outside. Elias was already awake, perched on the edge of the bed, coffee in hand, watching her with that quiet, steady gaze she had come to love. “Morning,” she whispered, a smile tugging at her lips despite the remnants of sleep. “Morning,” he replied softly, leaning down to press a gentle kiss to her forehead. “Sleep okay?” She nodded, curling a little closer, feeling the warmth of him seep into her shoulders. “Better… now,” she admitted. The honesty felt freeing, as if finally letting herself say it out loud made the weight of the past months lighter. They lingered there, in the easy, unspoken comfort of presence. No walls. No hesitation. Just the two of them, finally allowed to exist in the same space without fear or restraint. Later, over breakfast in the small kitchen, Claire popped by, bursting through the door like she owned the place. “So… are you two finally talking like normal humans, or am I still getting cryptic texts?” Ava laughed, warm and real. “We’re… working on it,” she said, feeling the sound of her own voice steadying her nerves. Claire smiled knowingly, perching on a stool at the counter. “Good. Because it’s about time you let someone in without overthinking everything.” Elias joined the laughter, reaching for Ava’s hand across the table. “She’s a tough one to keep up with,” he said, teasing, though his eyes held something softer, protective. “But worth it.” “Worth it,” Ava echoed, squeezing his hand, feeling a tingle of warmth shoot up her arm. Later that afternoon, Jonah stopped by to return a book he’d borrowed. “You two look… different,” he said, grinning. “Happier.” Ava and Elias shared a glance, a private understanding passing between them. “We’re… learning,” Elias said, voice steady. Mrs. Harper, from down the hall, popped her head in too, offering a plate of cookies and a warm, knowing smile. “Looks like you’ve got a good thing going,” she said, her eyes twinkling. “Don’t let it slip away.” The apartment was full of warmth, laughter, and small reminders that life wasn’t just about walls or fear—it was about the people you chose to share it with. The scent of Claire’s cinnamon muffins lingering from breakfast mixed with the soft aroma of Elias’s coffee, creating a cozy, grounded atmosphere that made the apartment feel like home. That evening, as the city lights blinked alive outside, Ava leaned against Elias, letting herself breathe fully for the first time in months. The gentle hum of traffic and distant chatter from the streets below seemed to fade, leaving only the quiet rhythm of their shared space. Leo was a memory. The past was just that—the past. And ahead of them stretched a quiet, steady promise: a space where both of them could exist, together, fully. Step by step. Wall by wall. Ava felt her fingers entwine with his tighter, drawing a deep, calming breath. For the first time, she didn’t feel the need to measure every word, every thought. She could simply be. With him. Elias’s hand brushed a stray strand of hair from her face, and she realized that love wasn’t always fireworks or grand gestures. Sometimes, it was quiet mornings, soft smiles, warm coffee, and knowing that someone was steadfast, unshaken by fear or hesitation. And finally, Ava knew that choosing Elias wasn’t just about love. It was about trust, courage, and the quiet knowledge that some spaces—once opened—could hold everything you needed. Together, they were home. The faint click of the hallway door reminded them that life continued beyond these walls. But inside, the space they shared was theirs. Safe. Steady. Full of possibility. And in that moment, nothing else mattered. Ava sipped her coffee, leaning against Elias, and smiled to herself. We don’t know what the future holds, she thought, but with him, I think I can face anything.
