It is the first day of us being in Edmonton. We just moved, and it is taking a lot of getting used to. We live in a small house with a lot of parks nearby. The house has a lot of space and there aren't many walls, so I like it here! It's open and spacious!
“So, what do you guys want for dinner tonight?” our mom called out from the other room followed by the sound of falling boxes. Star and I laugh after hearing the noise but rush in to help, worried she was hurt we didn't see the box she dropped and we tumbled over it. We all laugh as we lay on the floor smiling and helping each other up.
“I think sushi is a good idea!” Star says helping our mom up. My mom and I looked at her nodding and agreed with her.
“Sushi it is then.” my mom decided as she stacked up the boxes again.
We get to the new sushi restaurant and we immediately fall in love with the place. There is a mini waterfall and it's decorated wonderfully in cherry blossoms and black marble. The little amount went a long way as it softens the room. We sit down for a while taking in the wonderful designs as we decide what to eat. We tossed options together for a while and then decided.
“Sushi rolls, bubble tea, and assorted maki?” I ask with all orders assuming if we just put our main ideas together and share it will be easier on the bill and our stomachs. Star and Mom agreed and I stood up shyly to go order wanting to get rid of some social anxiety. We were there for what felt like an eternity and when we finally finished I wish I could eat more. Star suggested dessert and we stopped and looked at her like she had a black hole in her stomach. The silence and odd stare didn't last long as we all burst into laughter. Sushi is truly my favourite dish!
Once we got home we headed straight to our room, we were tired from eating so much, besides we needed to sleep, we had our first day of school tomorrow…
“S-Star?” I said to her climbing into bed realizing how fast the day went by. She looked at me hearing the concern in my voice. “Do you think that they… well… would find out?” I continued. Looking at an old photo of me and Star.
“Nope! I believe even if it controls you again, no one will find out!” she said with a smile reassuring me. She mumbled something under her breath with a smile but I was too focused on trying to keep myself from crying to realize it.
“Thank you…” I say rolling over on my side still a bit worried, but less than before.
It’s Thursday now and the first day of school for us, and all I want to do is sleep. “Come on Emma, we have to go! You don't want to miss out on a chance to make new friends, do you?” Star said, pulling my arm softly. She knew I was scared but she knew how to get me past that.
“Fine, I'll wake up…” I said rolling out of bed “I'll get changed. You can head downstairs and eat, I'll be down in a bit.”
I started getting dressed for school but even if I was scared I was never afraid of making new friends or at least have a chance to. I pull on a blue hoodie and some jeans just to match Star. I head down to see Star looking at her pancakes like a dog that's never been fed. “What are you doing?” I ask with a giggle.
She looked up at me startled for a second and then she replied. “waiting for you! we need to get through this day together! Every part.” I sit down and start eating 2 pancakes with a smile on my face. By the end and about time we have to start heading out, I've eaten 5 of the pancakes. Star looked at me funny when I asked for my fifth and when we finished we were all ready to go to school.
We start walking to school, it's only a five-minute walk but it feels a lot longer with the fear of someone finding out. Once we finally get to school we find out that all classes are made up of a maximum of 15 students. I was kinda scared, it was so different!
“Don't worry Emma, there is only one first day!” Star reassured me putting her hand on my shoulder.
“Ok you're right, I’ll get through this, besides we can meet up at lunch!” I said heading off to class, forcing a smile, and pushing away fear.
Star replied walking away almost skipping down the halls trying to find all the classes. I put my hair over my right eye like I used to in an attempt to look ‘normal’.
Once it's lunch I start to meet up with Star. I was just about to turn the corner of the school when two boys came up to me and drove me into a darkened corner. One of the boys was taller and looked a lot stronger than the other, while the other was shorter and looked extremely fast, both with equal power and a perfect body structure to their according strengths. I glanced around, realizing that the cameras didn't reach here and my anxiety started to rise.
“So you're the new kid huh?” the taller boy said. The fear of them knowing my secret took over me. I tried to stay calm but they could see right through that.
“Y-yeah I am,” I said looking around frantically for some way to get out.
“Hey look at her eyes they are different colours!” the smaller boy said brushing my hair off my face sending a tingle through my face as his cold hands brushed my cheek.
“You're right! So then what are you, a dog?” the taller one said with a menacing grin. Anger took over fear at that point but it only lasted for a second. As a car with its headlights on drove by I could make out the two boys' faces. They were kids from my class!
“Clinton and Carl?” I asked hoping they wouldn't hurt me if I knew their names, I glance between the taller boy and shorter one then back towards my escape which was soon blocked as Carl put his arm against the wall.
“So you know our names huh? Well then if you tell anybody that we were here you're gonna get it, kid!” Clinton Said walking away with Carl following close behind shaking his head and clicking his tongue laughing soon after. A shallow crooked laugh.
I got out of that place fast hoping no one else noticed, I didn't want anybody thinking I was weak or at least the newest victim to anyone's game. So I started to meet up with Star as I promised.
“What took you so long anyway?” she asked as she took out a pancake.
“Oh, nothing I just um… needed to use the washroom…” I replied. She looked at me confused as to why I was stuttering and glancing back at the school corner. She brushed it off as I gave her a small smile.
“Well ok wanna eat lunch over there?” she said pointing to a small hill a few meters away. I nodded my head not wanting to talk anymore and walked beside her.
The rest of the day was normal except the constant whispers of those two boys behind our back. I usually shrugged it off and teared up. I knew I would get treated this way for being the new girl but it made me wonder about Star and how she was treated. I don't like it when things like this happen to her. She went through too much because of me already.
I started to walk home with Star at my side and if I'd slow down enough as a meter away I’d speed up to be near her again. I was so scared thinking that those kids could be around. For her safety or mine.
Once we got home I went into our room. I sat on my bed and thought to myself as I tried to go over what had happened. ‘why did they treat me like that? Is it because I'm the new girl, because of my eyes, or do they know I'm-’ I shook my head and glanced out the window wanting to stop and run away. I would but you can't run away from fear and guilt. Star walked into the room as I was thinking. She saw me sad and came and sat on my bed beside me.
“Bad day?” she asked, putting her hand on my shoulder. I nodded, not wanting to break down in tears. “Come on mom is warming up leftovers from yesterday,” Star said wanting me to eat, of course, food helps but it doesn't get rid of the feeling completely.
“Ok,” I say standing up from the bed, dusting myself off secretly searching for any tear stains, and putting on a fake smile.
After I ate, even if it was one small plate I head upstairs to bed. At that point, I felt like I needed to run away because the fear of them knowing was washing over me like a wave. If they did know they could spread a rumour fast, and that would ruin me, both my reputation and my life, and if they are lucky enough, Star’s Life too.
I went over to my bed and did my routine: music, alarms, and then sleep. I didn't know what to do for music so I decided not to listen to anything. It would probably be depressing anyway. I got in bed rolled over on my side and faced my body to the wall isolating myself and my thoughts.
The next day I got up earlier than yesterday and couldn't sleep. It was six o'clock in the morning and the sun was the perfect height for a walk. I got my stuff on and started to look for my sweater when I saw Star come down the stairs.
“Well, you woke up early,” Star said wiping the sleep from her eyes.
“Yeah, I couldn't sleep, ” I replied, putting a fluffy purple sweater on.
“Want me to come with you?” Star looked at me. “And have you eaten yet?”
I shake my head as I start fidgeting with the zipper. “Ok, I'll make breakfast when we get back then.”
We finished our walk and started heading to school, and Star forgot to make breakfast but she did pack a lot of snacks for lunch so she probably won't be hungry. The day went by like yesterday except for lunch, I stayed inside too scared because of yesterday. I know I will be stronger on Monday if I get a small break.
Well, there was one good thing I found out while staying in for lunch because I learned that there is an art class! I signed up for it and when I attended, they loved my dog, cat, and wolf drawings.
The rest of the day I still got bullied by them and more people joined in if something happened. I hated having different coloured eyes, it got worse once they found out I have a hint of red in my eyes when I'm angry. At least they've only seen the start. But now they call me new names. Most of them are a dog, demon, hellhound- you get the point. I ignored most of them but some struck me and when they did it felt like an avalanche of hate fell only on me, but I guess that's what I get for being different, I just gotta learn to roll with the punches I guess.
Thankfully Star had a better day, she drew a bunch in class to block it all out. Again I stayed inside calming myself down but this time I ended up falling asleep while drawing, I awoke to both the bell and Star looming over me looking at my drawings.
I gladly ran out of the school as the final bell rings with Star at my side. Laughing at how all the kids try running out of the school. We walk home calmly forgetting about everything now that there is a small break from Clinton and Carl.
“The weekend! Woo!” I yell stretching my arms up. Star laughed with a sparkle in her eyes as she walked along with me to the back of the house.
“Come on Emma. We have to start doing the homework she assigned us. I mean, we do want to start with a good reputation right?” She said smiling. I was holding both her and my backpacks over each of my arms.
“Do you think we can even get through all this in one night?” I lift the backpacks showing the weight of the textbooks and paper.
“Well, it's,” She pauses to look at her watch. “3:30 and we head to bed at whenever seeing it's a weekend so if we stay up till at most 11…” She continues rambling explaining the way we can get it all done in one night.
I roll my eyes and walk in the back door. “Okay! Let's get started!” I say throwing the backpacks and it's contents onto the table.
