The next day, everybody was whispering about something while I would walk by but no one said anything to me. I was tugged into a class with no one but my friends along with Star. I was quite confused then I had an idea. I had this dark feeling that Devon and Jason were up to something much larger than ruining my school reputation. Yeah sure they were spreading rumours but I felt like they really had something bigger planned, it was too early in the year for ‘just rumours’. This dark feeling was in my stomach now but I couldn't let it get ahold of me. Not in front of my new friends.
We sat there for a while until I finally said something. “Ok what rumours are they?” everyone was surprised by how calm I was. Probably because they don't know I go through this every year.
“Umm, are you sure you want to hear?” Ava said softly. I nod and look towards the others. Cierra starts to talk
“well they aren't good that's for sure…” she says.
I roll my eyes and think “aren’t they all?” But at this point, I knew at least one of the rumours were really bad.
“Ok fine I'll say them! There's the fact you have no dad- they mostly just saying you have an unstable family... There is one saying you were bred from a dog, and you are called a dog.” Maddie said.
I rubbed the forming tears away and looked away from the group. “Are you ok Emma?” Star said worriedly. I look over at her seeing tears in her eyes too. She didn't care about herself as much as she cared about me.
“Y-yeah I'm fine. The rumours were fake… It was true are father did die, but our family isn't unstable. It just hits us some time. He ended up in a car crash due to some maniac chasing a wolf pup.” With all that said, that was probably the reason Star teared up too. We have almost gotten used to it but every now and then it hits us. The group is silent as they embrace me and Star in a hug.
“Are you guys ok?” Cassie said, walking into the room. Star and I wipe the tears from our eyes.
“Yeah we're fine,” I say.
“So have you heard any of the rumours?” Star asked Cassie.
“Yeah and I even know who started it!” she said smiling.
“Who!” I ask raising my voice. I had a hunch but I can't pick on the innocent so I have to know for sure.
“It was mostly Devon but Jason made one of the two,” she replied.
“Awesome!” I say “told you they were no good, Star,” I say standing up. “I'll be right back guys!” I finish running off. “I knew something was wrong, and I know exactly what will happen but I might just have a chance to finish this now.” I could hear Star calling after me slightly worried but I couldn’t let myself turn back, not with my eyes flickering red softly.
While rushing to the principal's office I am stopped my Devon and Jason “whats up.” I say pretending I didn't hear the rumours.
“Hehe, oh nothing I was just getting a call from my dad saying he has gotten a new dog for you to be friends with,” Devon said. I looked down and smiled.
“Oh yeah? I’m sure they would love to come over. I know I’d run away at the first sight of you two!” I said smiling. Devon and Jason were surprised at my comeback. “Oh and yeah sure I don't have a full family but at least I have friends,” I say smiling wider knowing I’m losing control.
My eyes were turning a deep red colour, but I couldn't let it get ahold of me. “Anyway, I have to go somewhere so if you would excuse me.” I finished, pushing them aside. Once I was half a hallway away I teared up. “Jerks,” I mumbled to myself. I look back and realize that Jason was infuriated while Devon had this flare in his eyes as he looked at me, It was kinda startling. I looked away. I didn't care anymore I just felt numb but I don't know why I was crying, not anymore. I realize the spark in his eyes means the idea backfired, I didn’t put them in their place, I gave them a challenge, a challenge their willing to try.
Once I get to the office and knock on the door there was a small pause. Usually, the principle answers the door right away. “excuse me?” I say hoping there was someone in there.
“Come in.” a voice says. It didn't sound like the principle but I opened the door anyway. “What’s up?” she asks. I look around the room for where the voice was coming from. The lights weren't on but I could still slightly see.
“Umm I have to talk to you about something, do you mind if we talk in the light I’m… not too keen on trying to see in the dark.” I say searching around the wall. Suddenly the lights turn on and I see the vice principal “Oh thank you!” I say.
“No problem… I don't recall your eyes being a red colour?” she said. The vice principal was very observant and knew about everything that happened within the school.
“Oh sorry, my eyes turn a deep red if I get angry or something like that. Anyway, I want to tell you something.” I say trying hard to change the subject. Of course, my mother told every principal about my demon in case something went wrong but I still don't like it when people see it.
“is it about Devon and Jason? I already know about the rumours so don't worry I will deal with them and as for your eyes I know that you have been bullied over them but I wanted to let you know that I think they look very unique,” she said
“O-oh! thank you, both for the compliment and dealing with them.”
Here's my school for you; the vice principal is nice, sometimes nicer than the normal principle, I hated most teachers, all my friends were good, classes were good, but the one thing I hated was the other kids, mostly Devon and Jason. From past years I know how this story goes; I'd try to talk to the teachers about it but all they would say was “sticks and stones may break your bones but words will never hurt you.” but to be honest those words really do hurt and those words hurt and stay much longer than broken bones.
The rest of the day went by like yesterday but Devon and Jason now hated me and would do anything to make me trip, fall, or drop my books in the halls. I learned to jump over their feet when the trip me and move to the side or get lost in crowds in the hallways. It was fun to make them mad and like Star said yesterday it is fun to feel like you're getting chased or followed. I gotta say I am surprised at how much I get people mad at me when really they ask for it.
