Lacy went completely crazy and choked Remi while getting in her face. "Are you done with this? You gave up custody, but now you're making your own baby suffer? The same kid you raised. You are accusing Ian of this?”
Remi clapped back with no emotion. "And so? He still calls your mistress "Mom" and begs her to be his mom.” She took a deep breath and spoke in a calm voice. "I've been quiet to protect your family's good name. But if you want to play hardball, don’t seem shocked when I start talking about all your dirty laundry.”
“You really want to blow everything up, huh? Are you ready to set fire to everything?” Lacy asked, his voice full of poison.
“No, to be more exact, it's about cutting the cord clean. Put everything on blast already. It would still be a huge disaster if I continued at Web Group. Let me go for both of us.” She smiled a little as she looked into his cold eyes. "Thanks for this perfect exit plan from your company, by the way."
Lacy got angry. "Don't try to blame things on other people. I know you better than anyone else after all these years of marriage. You merely want attention with this resignation, but you went too far. Don't involve Ian. Go home, clear your head, and then come back to work." He waved his hand in front of her face like she was a child being controlled by him.
Remi rolled her eyes. So, I'd battle for my own independence. She looked about to see if there was any way to make this situation better. The door to the car was locked hard, and when she examined the window, it was the same. She was stuck for now. And once they were out of the crowd, Lacy would have full control over her. Then she had a crazy thought: she wasn't going to give up.
She suddenly grabbed that headrest from the front seat and went full beast mode on the window, sending glass flying everywhere. The crash scared the reporters who were thirsty and had been pushed to the back. They all jumped out of their skin while trying to get their money shots. When they saw Remi’s face through that broken window, which looked like a final girl in a horror movie, they ran to video her.
Lacy’s face contorted with anger as he reached for her. Remi fell back against the glass that was broken and held a sharp piece to her neck. Her voice was icy and harsh. "Stop and let me out. Or I'm going to start yelling "kidnapping" out of this window. You won't ruin your whole reputation and business over this, will you, Mr. Web?”
Lacy gave her a cruel look, like he was made of stone. He didn't want to hear any of that at first. But when she came too close to that broken glass, he knew she wasn't joking anymore. She was serious. "Stop the damn car!" he yelled.
Mason didn't think twice; he stomped on the brake like it owed him money. A gentle click opened the doors the next second. Lacy pinched the bridge of his nose, which was about to break. "Get out!"
Remi threw that glass piece, swung the door open, and hit him with the most phony smile. "Thanks a lot!"
Lacy’s hands were tightly clenched, as if he were about to fight at any moment. The media vultures were having a great day with this mess. He was going to lose it, but he had to keep it together and said between clenched teeth, "Drive."
Remi called a cab and went home. While she was on the way, her thoughts went crazy as she looked over that suspicious payment receipt. The thought was killing her. She'd prefer to think that a hacker did this and not Ian. But if truly Ian did this, why?
But the police told her the truth: there was no evidence that anyone had hacked her account or logged in from another location. It looked like she did the transfer herself. She was going to let it go, but then she remembered that Lacy would think she made up the whole thing if it stays unclear. And that could be a card he could use against her.
She took out her phone after thinking about her thoughts for a long time and called someone. "I need some video from a place for security. Can you help me?”
•••••••
Lacy, on the other hand, went home instead of going to work. Ian, who was only a tiny boy, came running for him like a rocket, arms wide spread and a big smile on his face. "Dad.” He snuggled up to Lacy’s legs and wrapped himself around them. "I missed you so much. You won't believe what occurred today...”
As Lacy took off his jacket and looked at his son, Remi’s words hit him. He got very serious. "Did you take your mom's phone on the 15th and approved a transaction without her consent?”
He didn't waste any time; he just asked the question.
Ian froze. Guilt came over his face very quickly. "What are you talking about, Dad?"
Lacy caught that brief panic. His face was hard as a rock. He easily picked up Ian, and his voice got frigid. "Who gave you the guts to do that?"
Ian stopped talking it when he knew he had been caught. He sought to throw Remi under the bus instead. "Did Mom tell on me?!"
Lacy’s face got dark. "So instead of being a man, you're going to blame others? Do you even know what's right and wrong anymore?”
"It wasn't even that deep. And she ran to you. Mom is the one who is wrong! I was only playing! What's the big deal?” Ian clapped back, and he was really angry.
"You think that little "game" couldn't get someone put in jail or fired from work?" Lacy yelled.
That question left Ian speechless, like someone had suddenly cut off his power. "Really? His eyes got big as he heard, "You mean Mom could go to jail?"
"Who taught you how to move like that? You either spill or you have to deal with the consequences.” Lacy’s voice was like ice as he pushed Ian toward the door.
Ian was going crazy, not knowing whether to fight or run. He was going to say something when the kitchen door flew open and Bernice came out with a big smile on her face, like she'd won the jackpot. "Ian, your dad... Lacy? You're already home?”
She could tell that things were off in the room, so she swooped in and grabbed Ian. "What's happening here?"
"He snuck around with Remi’s phone and somehow approved a transaction of $10,000. Now she's in trouble for taking filthy money and almost getting caught.”
Bernice’s face changed completely. That smile went away faster than free food at a party. "What?!" She yelled.
