The war room still smelled like pine resin and old stone when Aria woke before dawn. She hadn't meant to fall asleep in the chair. The maps had blurred sometime after midnight, her eyes tracking the eastern perimeter until the lines stopped making sense and sleep took her without asking permission. Now grey light crept through the narrow window and her neck ached and someone had placed a blanket over her shoulders. She knew whose hands had done it without needing to ask. Kael was standing at the far wall when she lifted her head, his back to her, studying the same eastern section she'd fallen asleep over. He hadn't changed clothes. She wasn't sure he'd slept at all.
