One Friday night, inside an all pink decorated room with the atmosphere of Christmas reflection from the outside of the city that never sleeps, a phone beeps continuously on the bedside stool of the bedroom. She hurries out of the bathroom with her white towel wrapped around her armpits. She had just taken a shower after a long and stressful day at work.
“A private number?” She uttered under her breath after she approached the non-stop vibrating phone to check the caller ID. Who would hide a piece of contact information to call her when she expects no stress to rear its’ ugly head and unbearable face. At least, not until Monday morning!
She dried her hands with the towel on her to pick up the phone. She tries to summon the courage to pick the call but her heart begins to beat faster; not knowing whose voice she would hear and what message the anonymous caller had to deliver.
“Wonder why he hasn’t shown up yet?” A male voice spoke on the phone breathing heavily. He was on the run.
“Wha’ you talkin’ ‘bout?” Her voice almost faded in her native American accent. Something she rarely speaks except she is under intense pressure.
“I CAN’T MAKE IT TONIGHT AGAIN. WE’LL SEE SOME OTHER TIME.’ That’s what he told me to say to you.” She overheard the honk of the taxis on the streets. The music of the clubhouse echoed in his words as he spoke while panting.
“Where he at now? Huh? Tell me now!” Her loud response had a sense of urgency and she hurries to her wardrobe to get dressed. “Talk to me!” As she said these words, he hung up the phone.
What is going on? Why would Jon send someone with a hidden identity to deliver such a message? Emily had trusted him in the few moments they have been together. They had plans to get married next month but her hopes had been murdered by the one who made her believe in love and trust again.
She scrolled through her phone to dial her runaway lover’s phone. It was switched off! She phoned all his close friends, immediate family members and associates at work to confirm whether they have heard from Jon. All her efforts amounted to nothing as none gave her an optimistic response regarding the sudden disappearance of her so-called lover!
Confusion pierced deep into her soul as a solid metal melts in the presence of an extremely high-temperature degree. Before Jon came into her life, she was scared to give her heart to anyone who comes to her in the name of love. Her past experiences with her alleged lovers who betrayed her feelings, toyed with her emotions and crushed on her heart without mercy had made her an unbeliever of love.
She comes from a family where everyone had genuineness in their dealings with people. She has done that her whole life but along the line, she figures out that acting a saint in a villainous world does not make the world treat you like an unblemished lamb. She had deep intense feelings, passionate love and a non-phoney heart for all her lovers but they had paid her back with multiple betrayals and distrust.
As for Jon, he was the seventh man that had failed in the year. He had stepped up to her, asked her out, asks her to confront her fears while convincing her to get back up after a series of love-deceit had knocked her down in the arena of her benevolent love.
She had resisted Jon for a while but she gave in after much persistence from him. Unknowingly to her, she had placed her hands on the trigger that would take down her heart again. His unanticipated departure from her life had pulled the trigger, making her regret her blind action towards love. – She tested the depth of the waters with her two feet and she had begun to drown.
She had given her all to him but he brought on the worst heartbreak she had ever experienced. Every other dude that left her life never left in the same manner as Jon. They left because they either cheated on her or doubted her faithfulness towards them. Being a competent lawyer, she was at the peak of her career, always getting excessive attention gets from the elites of the society.
“Em’, you don’t have to stay down all day.” Jane showers pity on Emily as she enters the bedroom to sit by her side. She had come to visit after she heard the incident that had just occurred to one of her closest friends over the years. They grew up together, shared the same profession and Alma matter.
“And who told you I’ll be like this for the rest of the day?” Emily sobs with her head down.
“I can see it in you. If no one talks you out of this, then I’m afraid of the next step you’d take." She pushes Emily's head up. "Look Em’, I have known you all this while and …”
“You don’t know me, Jane!” She screams and they both had eyeball contact. "You have no idea of how my heart shivers from the harsh conditions it had been through. Can you tell me why I’m so unfortunate when it comes to finding genuine love?” Emily utters as she sobs and tries to clean her tears with the pink blanket on the bed she had laid for her runaway lover to come home that night to her.
"Look at you, you have a stable home, you’ve got kids. You’ve known just one man all your life and he’s the one you’ve been with for over twelve years and you come here to tell me you know me.” She stands up to leave the bedroom but Jane blocks her by the door, held her both hands firmly as if they were couples.
“I have a plan.” Jane whispers.
“What plan?” She responded with a brief smile on her crying face.
