Chapter 13

Jennifer PV     When we walked into the playroom, the children’s eyes almost popped out of their head. It was like they had never seen a toy before, let along the number of toys in this room. They ran into the room and each grabbed a different toy. I giggled at their excitement. They were so happy. If this was how they acted at just seeing toys, I needed to talk to Jason, Jonathan and Justin about getting the orphanage toys. These kids look like they are in real need on clothing also. Just because they don’t have parents, doesn’t mean that they have to look like they are living on the street. I was pulled out of my thoughts by Abigail as she pulled on my hand for attention. I looked down and saw that she was showing me the doll.     “Do you want to take care of the dolly,” I asked.     She quickly nodded her head. I smiled. I looked around and found a play bottle and a diaper and some pjs.     “Okay, Abigail, this is how you hold the baby,” I showed her as I put the baby in her arms. “Now, here is the bottle, so you can feed her,” I told her and I put the bottle in her free hand.     She carefully placed the bottle in the dolly’s mouth. When the took the bottle out, I smiled.     “Great, now, you need to burp the baby and see if she has any gas,” I told her as I put the baby on her shoulder and took her hand and started patting the baby’s back with her hand. She patted the baby’s back for a few moments and then looked at me again. I smiled.     “You are really good at taking care of the baby. Have you don’t if before,” I asked. She opened her mouth to say something, but then just shakes her head no.     “I think we should get the baby ready for bed, I told her. I laid the baby down and showed her how the change the baby’s diaper, then I put the baby in front of her and motioned for her to try. She changed the diaper. It took her a few tries to get the diaper the right way to fasten it, but she was so proud of herself when she was done. Then I brought over the a rocking chair and a crib and blanket. I picked her up and had her sit in the chair. I set the baby in her arms and showed her how to rock the baby. She rocked the baby for a little while.     “While you rock the baby, I am going to see what Adam is playing.” He had been playing by himself so quietly, but I didn’t want him to feel left out. I walked over to where he was and saw that he was building with building blocks, but he had a little wrinkle in his forehead as he tried to stack them and they fell down again.     “Adam, can I show you something?” I asked him.     He looked up at me and then nodded. I showed him the different sizes of blocks.     “See what happens if I put the smaller block down and then try to put a larger block on top of it?” I asked him. He watched as the top block fell. “Now, watch what happens if I start with the larger block, then the next size and then the smallest. Do you see how they stayed up better when I stack them up with the smaller blocks on top,” I asked. He studied it for a few moments and then made a tower that looked just like mine. He clapped in excitement when the tower didn’t fall.     Mary linked that dinner was almost ready. “Let’s leave this and go eat dinner. How does that sound,” I asked him. He nodded.     Then we walked over to Abigail. “It’s time for dinner, how about we put the baby in her crib and we can go to dinner. We will check on her when we are done, before bed, I told her. She nodded. I held the baby while she got out of the rocker. Then I gave her the baby back. She carefully placed the baby in the crib and put the blanket on top. Then we went down to the dinner table. I was glad to see that Mary thought to get high chairs for them and she placed a chair between them for me. I placed Adam on my left because that is where Jason usually sits and I thought he would do best with Jason. I put Abigail on the right side because Jonathan or Justin took turns on that side.  I had both kids situated and had just sat down when the guys walked in. Both kids grabbed for my hands when they walked in and I squeezed their hands for reassurance.     “Adam, Abigail, these are the Kings and my mates, Jason, Jonathan and Justin. Guys this is Adam and Abigail, they are twins from the orphanage. They are my newest friends and came over for a play date and sleepover.” I told them.     The guys smiled and slowly approached.     “It is very nice to see you again Adam and Abigail. We were the three that found you and brought you to the doctor and then ultimately to the orphanage. We are so happy that you are keeping Jennifer company and are her friend. She hasn’t made many friends since she got here, Jonathan said.     They smiled. Mary opened the door as women started bringing in the food. She had made a ton of food. I couldn’t believe how many dishes they set down on the table. There was Macaroni and cheese, spaghetti, lasagne, salad, and so many other choices. I asked them each what they wanted as I pointed to each item. They nodded or shook their heads no to each item. I found that their favorite was macaroni and cheese. They had three helpings of it each.     “Don’t they talk,” Jason asked.     “No, no one has been able to get through to either of them. In fact Sandy said that today when I talked to them was the first time she had even seen them smile at someone or really respond in a positive way. She was so excited for me to take them on the play date because they seemed so excited and it was the most animation she had seen from them in the last 6 months combined.”     They nodded in understanding. When dinner was over, Mary brought each of us out a large piece of chocolate cake with a side of ice cream. In reality, normally it would have been to large of a piece the twins to even share, but I couldn’t begrudge them these pieces knowing that there was a good chance that they didn’t have many birthdays and by the way they devoured the cake I would say chocolate was something that the kids hadn’t tasted very often. They had both eaten both their pieces before any of the adults were half way through. I wiped off their hands and faces.
