5 years ago:
"Lily, please, you have to trust me." My father begged me as he began packing my bags for me. I was refusing to leave. I didn't understand what was happening. All I knew was my dad told me we had to leave.
My brother Tyler stood in the doorway with his bag ready. His face was blank, expressionless. I knew he was doing it to hide his true feelings. He did the same thing when our mother passed away.
"We are not leaving without you!" I yelled at my dad, who was shoving my clothes into a duffle bag.
"Lily. There is only room in the van for two more people. Both of your lives are more important than mine."
My father stood in front of me with tired blueish grey eyes. His black thinning hair was a mess from him running his fingers through hair. He does that when he's frustrated or even upset.
"I can't just leave you." I whispered, my bottom lip started to tremble as I felt the tears beginning to rush to my eyes.
I was too young to leave my dad. I was only 16. Now he was forcing Tyler and I out to protect us.
My dad closed the space between us and gave me a tight hug. I buried my face in his shoulder and breathed in his scent.
"Lily, I'll be damned if I watch them turn you into a slave. This is the only way I can protect you. So please. Do it for me." His voice cracked as he pleaded with me.
It hurt me to hear the pain in his voice. I never liked it when he cried.
I couldn't bear to cause him anymore pain by arguing with him. I sniffled as I whispered ok.
We both finished packing the duffle bag. I grabbed a picture on my nightstand. It was a picture of all of us before my mom died. Standing on the pier at sunset. I shoved it into the bag.
Tyler still remained expressionless as he turned to exit the room. We all went down the stairs and into the kitchen.
My dad handed me another bag. I looked inside to see a bunch of essentials like pads, toilet paper, and soaps. Tears welled up in my eyes, not that he bought this stuff us. He bought it all the time. It was because of how much there was. Like he knew we were going to be gone for a long time.
There was something happening to the world. It wasn't a zombie apocalypse either.
"The creatures have already taken down the government. It won't be long till they own the United States, too." My dad told us quickly as he began pack food for us.
The creatures in questions have already taken over Europe and Asia. Destroying everything that gets in their way. Capturing humans and making them their slaves.
"What even are they?" Tyler finally spoke up. Tyler was 2 years older than me. He was 18, and I was 16. He was supposed to start college in a few months. No one thought those plans, and his dreams were going to be shattered.
"Blood sucking demons." My dad told us pausing to look at us. "They live off of blood."
"Like vampires?" I questioned my eyes, narrowing in disbelief. I have read books and seen movies before about vampires. Yet that's all they were to me or to anyone.
"That's what the news it saying. Vampires have risen and are killing our leaders. They are turning us into slaves and using us to feed on." My dad told me staring at the table in a daze.
He shook his head, shaking himself out of his daydream.
"We must go. I can't let that happen to either of you. " He said as he grabbed the bag of food and handed it to my brother.
We left the house through the back door. It was starting to get dark out, and there was a cold chill in the air. We headed a few houses down to our neighbors. My dad was close friends with them. They went to high school together.
We got the garage, and my Dad knocked on the door in a certain rhythm. It had to be a code to let them know it was us. My dad's friend Gerald peeked through the door and looked at us. He opened the door and ushered us inside.
"Quickly," Gerald said, looking past us onto the street to make sure no one was watching. Gerald was a tall middle-aged Italian man with black curly hair. His wife greeted Tyler, and I quietly. She was the same age as Gerald but was Hispanic with red straight hair.
She usually had a very bubbly personality. But I could see why she wouldn't be so happy right now.
Inside the garage was a large black van with tinted windows. There were three rows of seats. Most of them were already taken by 2 other families. leaving 2 seats open in the back for my brother and I.
"This is my life savings." I heard my dad say. I turned around just in time to see my dad hand Gerald a large wad of cash.
"Dad. No." I said, shocked at how willing he was to hand it over. He was saving it to buy a house on the beach once I grew up and moved out. Where mom always wanted to live.
"I have to, Lily. To get you guys somewhere safe. Away from all of this. Gerald will need gas and supplies, " He told me, and he walked over to Tyler and I.
"But you've been saving for that house since before I was born." I told him, feeling the tears well up in my eyes again. None of this was fair. What's going to happen to my dad now.
"Keeping you kids safe is far more important."
He wrapped us both up in his arms and held us close to him. I hugged him back and heard Tyler stiffel a sob. My dad kissed us both on the head.
"I will come for you guys one day. We will be together again. I promise you both." He leaned back, looking over our faces. He stopped on Tyler's face. "You take care of yourself and your sister. Don't let anyone hurt her."
My brother nodded, wiping tears from his eyes. My dad was always protective of me from boys. Who would've thought I would need protection from vampires.
"We must be going." Gerald whispered to my dad. I kissed him goodbye one last time before climbing into the van with Tyler. We sat next to each other and we gave each other a nervous look.
I watched Gerald say goodbye to my dad. My dad looked to us one last time. The tears were swimming in his eyes. I wanted to run out and hug him one last time. But he knew what I was thinking as he opened the door we came through, and he was gone.
I began crying uncontrollably as the van started up. Tyler wrapped his arm around my shoulder in an effort to comfort me.
We were in the van for roughly 2 days. We were only stopping to use the bathroom whenever Gerald thought it was safe. Whenever he would get tired, his wife would take over. No one was sure where we were going, except for Gerald and his wife. Part of me was worried this was some trafficking sceme my dad fell for. I didn't see any danger. But I did notice there weren't a lot of people driving anymore.
I watched in horror as we left the main road somewhere in Nevada and started driving through the desert. I was starting to panic that my trafficking thoughts were true.
After what felt like an hour, we pulled up to an area where there were other people. They were building like wooden shacks in the desert heat.
"We are here." Gerald said
