Chapter 5: When Control Slips
It started with a rumor.
Ha-eun heard it in passing—two coworkers whispering near the coffee machine. Her name wasn’t mentioned, but she felt it anyway.
Late nights.
Special treatment.
Favors.
Her chest tightened.
She spent the rest of the day avoiding everyone… except him.
Which, of course, made it impossible to avoid Min-jae.
---
That evening, she found him in the hallway outside his office.
“This has to stop,” she said, voice low but firm.
He closed the door behind them.
“What did you hear?”
“Enough.”
Silence fell.
He removed his glasses slowly, rubbing the bridge of his nose—a crack in his control she had never seen before.
“I never meant for this to affect you,” he said.
“But it is.”
He looked at her then—really looked.
“You matter more than this job,” he said quietly.
Her breath caught. “You can’t say things like that.”
“I already have.”
The distance between them disappeared without either of them noticing who moved first.
“This is wrong,” she whispered.
“Yes.”
His voice was barely audible now.
“But if you ask me to stop…”
“I will.”
She searched his face.
And didn’t say the word.
That was all the answer he needed.
