CHAPTER 4 _ THE DECISION THAT OPENED THE DOOR

718 Words
THE DECISION THAT OPENED THE DOOR John left the sitting room without another word. No argument followed him. No conclusion. Just silence settling behind his steps. He went straight to his room. Elena didn’t sleep. She sat on the edge of her bed, slippers still on, staring at nothing and everything at once. The room was quiet, but her mind wasn’t. And the tears didn’t stop. Not loudly…. Just steady. Rosa stood at the doorway for a moment, watching her daughter as she was trying to understand a weight too heavy for her age. Then she turned. And went to call John. A knock came at his door. “John.” His voice came low. “What?” “It’s Elena.” Silence answered first. Then, John exhaled….. And stood. He found her still awake. Sitting….. “Why aren’t you sleeping?” he asked. Elena didn’t answer immediately. Then softly: “I can’t.” John moved closer. “Talk to me.” A pause. Then she looked up. “Dad… you said I can’t go.” John didn’t respond. That silence was enough confirmation. Elena stood slowly. “You didn’t even consider it.” Her voice shook, but she held it together. John’s jaw tightened slightly. Elena continued. “You keep saying St. Alden is dangerous.” “But dangerous because of what?” A pause. “Because of them?” she asked. “Or because of what happened to you?” That landed. He didn’t move. Elena didn’t stop. “You never told me everything.” “But I know enough.” “You were alone.” “No mother, no father….” Silence tightened in the room. “No one protected you.” Her voice softened. “I’m not alone.” “I have you.” “I have mom.” “So why are you still fighting this like I don’t have anyone?” A breath. “Or is it because you’re afraid I’ll become something you couldn’t protect?” That was the moment the room changed. Not loud….. But irreversible. John’s expression tightened, not anger, not weakness. Control. Always control. “You think it’s that simple?” he asked. Elena didn’t step back. John continued. “You think love is enough in places like that?” Silence. His voice dropped. “You don’t understand what exists inside that system.” “You don't understand what that place turns people into.” Elena whispered immediately. “Then teach me.” That stopped him. Just for a second. John looked at her. Long….. too long. His hand lifted slightly, then stopped halfway. He turned away briefly like something inside him had tightened too much to hold. When he spoke again, his voice was calm. “Go to bed, little star.” Elena didn’t move. “Dad” “Common little star.” Not loud…. Not angry. Final. Elena stood there for a moment longer. Then slowly sat back down. John watched her once. Then left. Rosa met him in the corridor. “You saw her?” John nodded once. “She’s not backing down.” Rosa exhaled. “She won’t.” A pause. Then softer: “John… she’s your daughter.” “I know.” “And she’s not you.” That silence stayed longer than expected. John didn’t respond, but he didn’t deny it either. Night settled deeper. John didn’t sleep. Elena didn’t sleep. Rosa didn’t sleep. Something had shifted inside the house without noise. And once something shifts like that, It doesn’t return to place easily. Morning came too soon. Rosa was the first to notice the paper on the table. Folded. Placed. Intentional. She opened it. John’s handwriting. “Prepare Elena for orientation…. We leave today.” Rosa froze. Then slowly looked up. “Elena.” Footsteps came quickly. Elena appeared at the doorway. Still half-awake. Rosa held up the letter. Silence. Then, Elena read it. Once. Then again…… and something changed in her face. Not confusion…. Not fear, but relief. Like a door she thought was closing… Had finally opened. Far away, outside the estate gates, John stood alone for a moment. Watching nothing in particular. Then he turned back inside, because somewhere deep inside him…. He knew. This was no longer a discussion. It was a line being crossed. Quietly. Permanently.
