CHAPTER 4 _ THE GATE THAT WATCHES

735 Words
It was a Monday,a day acknowledged as Elena's school screening day. The car moved steadily away from the Harrington estate as part of a quiet escort, and Elena sat by the window holding the folded letter in her lap while Rosa remained beside her, watching the road as the surroundings slowly changed from familiar streets into cleaner, quieter, and more organized parts of the city. After a while, Rosa spoke softly without looking away from the road. “Places like this don’t receive people casually,” she said. “Everything there has levels.” Elena turned slightly toward her. “Then how do they decide who belongs there?” Rosa paused briefly before answering. “Sometimes they choose people. Sometimes the system notices them first.” Elena looked back out the window without replying, quietly watching the streets become more structured the closer they got to St. Alden’s. Elsewhere, John Parker had already received the message about Elena’s enrollment through Harrington approval, and after reading it once, he leaned back quietly and said under his breath, “So she’s entering that world.” His voice carried both pride and concern because even though the opportunity was rare, he understood the kind of environment St. Alden represented. The convoy slowed as tall gates appeared ahead, and once they opened, the cars moved smoothly into the school grounds where everything immediately felt controlled and precise without anyone needing to say it out loud. Elena stepped out beside Rosa calmly, holding the letter as she quietly observed the large buildings, the glass corridors, and the students moving through the campus with practiced confidence. Rosa adjusted Elena’s sleeve gently and said, “Stay observant. People here notice more than they say.” “I understand,” Elena replied softly, though part of her was still trying to understand exactly what her mother meant. A staff guide soon approached and led them through long polished hallways where even silence seemed organized, and Elena walked calmly beside Rosa without looking nervous or overwhelmed, only quietly attentive to everything around her. Above them, Cassandra Winslow stood near an upper glass corridor and watched longer than she intended as Elena passed below. She couldn’t explain it properly, but Elena didn’t move like someone entering an unfamiliar place for the first time. There was a strange steadiness about her that quietly held attention. The guide eventually stopped near a registration desk and said, “This is the enrollment section,” before turning to Elena with a polite gesture. Rosa stepped slightly aside at that moment, allowing Elena to move forward on her own. Elena handed over her letter and answered each question calmly and clearly, speaking only when necessary. The staff member reviewing her file paused briefly after checking the details, and though the pause lasted only a second longer than normal, it was enough to be noticed. Rosa saw it immediately but said nothing. Elena noticed it too. Still, neither of them asked questions. After a few more minutes, a soft announcement echoed through the building. “Enrollment candidates should proceed to the orientation hall.” Rosa turned toward Elena slowly. “This is where I stop.” Elena looked at her. “You’re not coming?” “From here,” Rosa replied gently, “you walk by yourself.” For a moment, neither of them moved. Then Rosa fixed Elena’s sleeve one last time and lowered her voice slightly. “Don’t speak too quickly. Watch people first.” Elena nodded once. “I will.” Rosa stepped back. “Go.” Elena turned and walked alone toward the orientation hall where rows of students were already seated in quiet order. She found an empty seat without hesitation and settled in calmly while soft conversations continued around her. From the upper level, Cassandra watched again, and this time her attention stayed longer because Elena was blending into the environment too easily for someone who had just arrived. As orientation began and the first screening started, Elena answered the questions calmly and correctly, and little by little, the tutors began noticing how quickly she understood things and how naturally intelligent she sounded for a new student. A few of them exchanged quiet looks and started taking small notes while the attention around her slowly began to grow without Elena even realizing it. And wi thout knowing it yet she had already started standing out.
