Chapter 6: The Counterplay

367 Words
Tessa sat alone in her apartment, the glow of her laptop casting sharp shadows across the walls. She had replayed the conversation from the café in her mind countless times, each angle revealing something she had missed before. Isla was clever, too clever, but Tessa wasn’t entirely blind either. Her fingers paused over the keyboard as she typed messages, then deleted them. Every word had to be exact. Every move planned. One wrong step could make everything worse. Outside, rain tapped steadily on the window. It matched the rhythm of her thoughts which were steady, urgent, and impossible to ignore. The storm in her mind matched the tension growing between her, Thompson, and Isla. She knew Thompson’s loyalty could easily be swayed. He wanted to do the right thing, but Isla’s influence had already reached him. Tessa needed leverage, and fast. A plan took shape—a quiet move to make Isla doubt, and bring Thompson closer to her. Her phone buzzed. A message from Thompson: > I’m not sure what to do anymore. Tessa gave a small, knowing smile. The first crack appeared. Tessa gave a small, genuine smile. The first split appeared. She leaned back, tightening her eyes. The game wasn’t just about reacting anymore—it was about setting the trap before anyone noticed. And Tessa planned to stay several steps ahead. But what if he resisted?, Tessa asked herself. Would Thompson even see the plan she set for him? Or would he stumble and fall into Isla's trap again? She felt her fingers touch the keys in her bag, and a she felt a small relief. She wouldn't run. She wouldn't hide. She would not act, but she would do it carefully, deliberately, she thought. She picked up the phone again, typing a question to herself in a note, as though she was writing a diary:"Am l patient enough to wait for the perfect moment?" She read it, breathed, and knew the answer. Yes. Patient was a weapon she would choose over a sword. Her face beamed with a quiet smile. The storm outside continued, but inside, Tessa felt calm before the strike. Would Tessa claim what's hers, patiently or would she initiate violence?
