Saturday night in Modu meant neon on every street and a line outside every hotpot place. Chen Feng heard all of it through the dormitory window as he lay on his bed with his phone on his chest, staring at a water stain on the ceiling shaped vaguely like Hainan.

His 3 roommates had gone out. Wang Hao was meeting friends, Zhao Jun had muttered something about a gathering, and Liu Yang had simply vanished, which was normal for Liu Yang.

Chen Feng checked his bank balance. ¥286.40. It was almost the same as yesterday, which was the problem.

"Money really is important," he sighed.

Half of it was already spoken for. His younger brother's school fees were due, and his twin sister's allowance needed topping up. Orphans learned to do that math early, and he'd never stopped doing it. Whatever was left over was his, and it was never much.

Chen Feng: I'm not hiding. I'm resting. I'm a hardworking university student.

He laughed, and the room felt a little less empty. They chatted until she had to go.
