Chapter 9 The Shopping Spree
"Let's order lunch, Ruoxi."
Su Ruoxi blinked. She had been staring at him for a full minute without noticing.
"Feng... can you tell me what's going on?"
"What's going on?"
"You know exactly what I mean! Since when are you this rich?"
He leaned back in his chair. "I'm still the same Chen Feng."
"That's what scares me!" she whispered, glancing at the diners around them. "Are you sure you're okay?"
He reached across the table and squeezed her hand. "I promise I'm fine. I'll explain everything when the time is right. For now, just enjoy our date."
She studied his face for a long moment, then nodded. "You owe me an explanation."
"I know."
Manager Zhang appeared at the table, his back so straight that he looked ironed. Behind him, an employee carried a leather presentation case.
"Mr. Chen, your Supreme membership card is ready. Please accept our deepest apologies for earlier."
Chen Feng glanced at the card, took it, then turned and placed it in Su Ruoxi's palm.
"Here. It's yours."
"...What?"
"Use it whenever you want to eat here. With me or without me."
"Feng, this is the Supreme Card! You paid ¥200,000,000 for it!" She tried to push it back. "I can't take this!"
"Why not?"
"Because it's too expensive!"
He folded her fingers around it. "Because you're my girlfriend. You don't have to feel guilty every time I buy you something."
Her eyes went a little wet. She lowered her head and pretended to examine the card. He noticed and didn't tease her.
"Fine," she said at last, sliding it into her bag. "But I'll only use it when I really need to."
"Use it whenever you want. That's what it's for."
"You're impossible."
"And yet you like me."
"Who said I like you?"
"Should I take the card back, then?"
She clamped both hands over her handbag. "Don't you dare!"
At the next table, a man in a tailored suit leaned toward his wife. "First Supreme Card holder this year," he whispered. "And he hands it to his girlfriend like a bubble tea coupon."
"Then she's the luckiest girl in Modu," his wife whispered back.
Ms. Li had already left. Nobody had seen her go, except the waitress, who had watched her hurry out with her handbag held against her chest and her eyes glued to the floor.
---
After lunch, Chen Feng stood and held out his hand. "Shall we go shopping?"
"Shopping?" Her eyes lit up. "Where?"
"Modu International Luxury Plaza."
She nearly walked into the door.
The Plaza had polished marble floors, crystal chandeliers and a doorman who bowed to the Ferrari before it had finished parking. Su Ruoxi walked in holding Chen Feng's arm and trying to look like she belonged.
"Chanel first!"
"Chanel it is."
In the Chanel boutique, a saleswoman took one look at the red key in Chen Feng's hand, and her smile doubled in size. Su Ruoxi found a cream tweed suit priced at ¥128,000 and held it up as if the tag might change if she stared long enough.
"Try it," said Chen Feng.
She came out of the fitting room, turned once and asked, "Well?"
"Beautiful."
"You say that about everything!"
"Would you rather I lied?"
She laughed and went back in. By the time she was done, she had chosen 23 pieces: 4 tweed skirt suits at ¥128,000 each, 5 dresses at ¥98,000 each, 6 blouses at ¥45,000 each, 4 skirts at ¥58,000 each and 4 cardigans at ¥68,000 each.
"Sir, your total is ¥1,776,000."
Chen Feng handed over his bank card without checking the receipt.
[Payment Successful: ¥1,776,000.]
[Ding! Eligible expenditure detected. Congratulations, Host! You have received ¥177,600,000 in cashback!]
Outside the fitting room, 2 young women in matching designer coats had stopped pretending to browse.
"That's the guy from the red Ferrari," one whispered. "The one parked right at the entrance."
"Look at his girlfriend. She tried on 23 things and he didn't even check the price."
"Which family is he from? I've never seen him before."
Chen Feng pretended he didn't hear.
---
At Dior, a girl was arguing with her boyfriend over a ¥48,000 blouse when Su Ruoxi walked in with 3 shopping bags swinging from her arm. The girl stopped mid-sentence. Her boyfriend followed her gaze to the Ferrari key, then to the man holding it, and carefully studied the ceiling.
"Honey," the girl said slowly, "why can't you do that?"
"I..."
"Never mind."
Su Ruoxi left with 24 pieces: 6 dresses at ¥118,000 each, 3 coats at ¥188,000 each, 4 two-piece outfits at ¥138,000 each, 5 blouses at ¥48,000 each, 4 tailored trousers at ¥58,000 each and 2 evening gowns at ¥288,000 each. The total came to ¥2,872,000.
[Ding! Congratulations, Host! You have received ¥287,200,000 in cashback!]
At Gucci, she chose 23 pieces for ¥1,970,000, and ¥197,000,000 came back. At Louis Vuitton, she chose 19 pieces for ¥2,068,000, and ¥206,800,000 came back. By the second boutique, the saleswomen had stopped mentioning prices. By the third, the manager had come out to shake Chen Feng's hand himself.
"Feng, are they all staring at us?" Su Ruoxi whispered.
"Probably the Ferrari."
"It's not in the parking lot anymore!"
"Then probably you."
She went pink and kept walking.
By then, the corridor outside the boutiques had changed. Strangers were following at a distance. A group of girls near the escalator was whispering and filming and pretending not to. One of them called out, "Brother, are you single?" and went red when her friends screamed.
"I'm taken," Chen Feng said pleasantly.
Su Ruoxi's grip on his arm tightened. She said nothing, but she walked a little straighter.
---
The Hermès boutique was quiet and smelled of leather. The saleswoman set the first bag on a velvet tray with the care of someone laying a baby in a cradle.
"This one is ¥200,000."
Su Ruoxi held it, smiled and looked at Chen Feng. "What do you think?"
"It suits you."
"I'll take it."
The second bag was ¥500,000. She froze. "Five hundred thousand?"
"Do you love it?"
"...Yes."
"Then don't give up something you love because of a price tag."
She swallowed. "All right."
Then came the special-edition Birkin at ¥1,480,000. She stared at it for so long that the saleswoman began to look nervous. Then Chen Feng said, "We'll take it," and the saleswoman had to hold on to the counter.
By the end, Su Ruoxi had chosen 10 handbags: 3 at ¥200,000 each, 2 at ¥500,000 each, 2 special-edition Birkins at ¥1,480,000 each, 2 Kellys at ¥1,880,000 each and 1 rare limited-edition Birkin at ¥2,800,000. The total came to ¥11,120,000.
[Payment Successful: ¥11,120,000.]
[Ding! Congratulations, Host! You have received ¥1,112,000,000 in cashback!]
He signed the receipt without blinking. When the manager asked where to send everything, he gave an address, and the manager wrote it down with both hands.
Outside, the crowd had grown. Somebody near the escalator was livestreaming.
"Guys, I'm in front of Hermès right now. A young man just bought 10 bags in one go. No, I'm not joking. He didn't even ask the price."
[This is fake, right?]
[Which family's son is this??]
[Girlfriend's dress is the new Chanel, I recognize it!]
[But why would he spend that much, when they are things he could have done for the country]
[Get down there! You're just jealous he is not buying them for you]
[Why would I need a man to buy things for me? I'm also a man]
[Now I see where the jealousy is coming from]
[You're jealous because you don't have money]
[Obviously, I'm sure if he has enough, he would do more than this]
[Men are always saying nonsense whenever they are jealous]
[You guyyyyssss, I don't care about that man, I need a man like the one buying things for his girlfriend]
[Me too]
[Streamer, get all his information right now, I will give to ten roses]
[But he has a girlfriend]
[Thank God you said girlfriend, not a wife]
Su Ruoxi had changed into one of her new dresses in the fitting room. She held the ¥1,480,000 special-edition Birkin close against her side and kept glancing at her reflection in the shop windows as if it might vanish.
"Feng." She leaned in. "We spent ¥19,806,000 this afternoon. That's 89 outfits and 10 handbags!"
"Yes."
"You're not even surprised."
"Should I be?"
She laughed in spite of herself.
"Then where are we going now?" she asked. "Please tell me!"
He smiled. "You'll find out soon enough."
"Chen Feng!"
He took her hand and pulled her toward the exit.
Behind them, the livestreamer kept filming, his voice a little shaky now.
"Chat, I don't know who this is, but I'll say it now. Whoever this young master is, Modu is about to find out."
[Streamer, you should be the one finding out for us]
