Chapter 10 The Patek Philippe Watch
Chen Feng pulled Su Ruoxi away from the crowd. She was still laughing and glancing back over her shoulder.
"Feng, where are we going? Just give me a hint!"
"No."
"One tiny hint!"
"No."
She pouted, but she let him lead her down the corridor. A few minutes later, he stopped in front of a boutique with a quiet gold sign above the door.
Patek Philippe.
Su Ruoxi's eyes went wide. "Feng. Why are we here?"
"Don't you like watches?"
"I do, but this is Patek Philippe!" She dropped her voice to a whisper. "Some of them cost millions. Some cost tens of millions!"
"Then let's go in and look."
Inside, the lights were soft and the air was cool. Watches sat in glass cases like jewels in a museum. A few customers moved around them in near silence.
A saleswoman glided over. Her eyes landed on Su Ruoxi first, on the new dress and the ¥1,480,000 Birkin on her arm, and her smile warmed by several degrees. Then she looked at Chen Feng's plain shirt, and it cooled by exactly the same amount.
*So that's how it is. A rich girl and a pretty boy with empty pockets. I've seen this a hundred times.*
"Good afternoon, miss." She spoke to Su Ruoxi and only to Su Ruoxi. "Are you looking for a gift?"
"Just browsing. Could we see the catalog?"
"Of course." She handed it over, then lowered her voice into a gentle, confiding tone. "Miss, if you're shopping for your companion, I'd suggest our entry-level collection. Some young men don't know the difference between what they want and what's reasonable. It's better to set expectations early."
Su Ruoxi blinked. "I'm sorry?"
Chen Feng said nothing. He was flipping through the catalog over her shoulder until one page made him stop.
A limited-edition piece with a deep blue dial and a slim, perfect case. Beneath the photo: ¥12,000,000.
"This one," he said. "Please bring it out."
The saleswoman didn't even look at him. She turned to Su Ruoxi with a patient little sigh. "Miss, is this the one *he* wants? It's ¥12,000,000. Please don't feel pressured."
The smile slid off Su Ruoxi's face.
"Pressured?" she said quietly. "He asked you to bring the watch out. Why are you talking to me?"
"Miss, I'm only looking out for you. Men like that..."
"Bring. It. Out."
Her cheeks flushed. "Of course."
By the time she returned with the velvet tray, a small audience had formed. A couple at the next counter. A young man in a gray suit. Two other saleswomen who had suddenly found a reason to stand nearby. Everyone could feel it: a scene was coming.
"It's beautiful," Su Ruoxi breathed.
"Do you like it?"
"Of course I do."
"Then I'll take it."
The saleswoman's thin smile came back. She said it loudly, so the whole shop could hear. "Sir, this piece is ¥12,000,000. Full payment, no installments, no *loans from your girlfriend*. Perhaps you'd like to see our entry-level collection after all? We have a lovely ¥30,000 piece that suits your... budget."
One of the other saleswomen covered her mouth. The couple exchanged a look.
Chen Feng looked at her for a long moment. Then he took out his bank card and set it on the glass.
"Run it."
"Sir, I don't think you understand. Cards over a certain limit will be declined, and it's very embarrassing in front of everyone..."
"Run it."
She sniffed and carried the card to the terminal like something she didn't want to touch. "Everyone, watch," she murmured to the girl beside her. "This is going to be good."
BEEP.
[Payment Successful: ¥12,000,000.]
In Chen Feng's mind, the system chimed.
[Ding! Eligible expenditure detected. Congratulations, Host! You have received ¥1,200,000,000 in cashback!]
The saleswoman stared at the screen. She stared at it again. The smile stayed on her face a full second after her eyes had stopped believing it.
"It... went through."
"Of course it did," the young man in the gray suit said, loudly enough to carry. "Did you think he was lying?"
Somebody snorted. The other saleswomen found their shoes fascinating.
The manager had heard the commotion from the back and arrived at a speed that was only just dignified. He saw the terminal, the card, then the saleswoman's face, and went straight for the kill.
"What did you say to this gentleman?"
"Manager, I only..."
"I heard it from the office. 'Loans from your girlfriend.'" His voice dropped. "Do you know that the customers you just insulted spent ¥20 million at the Plaza today? The whole building is talking about them."
The saleswoman's knees nearly gave out. "I... I didn't..."
"Apologize. Now."
She turned to Chen Feng, her face white. "Sir, I'm so sorry. I was wrong. I judged you by your clothes."
"You judged me by my clothes," Chen Feng said calmly, "and you said it to my girlfriend, in front of everyone, to make her doubt me." He glanced at the ¥30,000 piece she had pointed to. "You offered me that one. I'll take it too, and you can wear it to your next performance review."
He didn't wait for an answer. "Manager, this woman will not be handling my account again."
"Understood, sir. She won't be handling anyone's, after today."
The saleswoman's mouth opened. Nothing came out. Her face went from white to red to a color that has no name. She bowed so low that her hair brushed the glass.
The couple at the next counter were openly filming now.
Chen Feng took the bag from the manager and turned. "For you."
Su Ruoxi didn't take it at first. She only stared.
"Feng... that's twelve million yuan."
"I know."
"You bought it for me?"
"Who else would I buy it for?"
Her eyes shone. She took the bag in both hands and held it against her chest.
"Thank you," she whispered.
Behind them, the young man in the gray suit had his phone out. "Did you see that?" he hissed to his friend. "They thought he was a kept man. He just bought a ¥12 million Patek in five minutes. Like lunch."
"Which young master is this?"
"I don't know. But someone better find out."
---
The sun was low and gold by the time the red Ferrari stopped outside Su Ruoxi's dormitory building. She sat for a moment with the Patek bag on her knees.
"Today felt like a dream."
"Then I hope you don't wake up."
She laughed and got out. At the window she leaned in. "Drive carefully."
"Go inside."
She waved and went up the steps, her new dress swaying and the Birkin on her arm. The corridor was quiet. Halfway up the stairs she heard voices from her room.
She pushed the door open.
Lin Xiaoyu was sitting on her bed with a face mask on. Tang Meilin had her phone out. Guo Wenjing was reading. All three of them looked up at the same time.
Nobody said a word. They stared at the dress, then the Birkin, then the Patek Philippe bag swinging from her wrist.
Lin Xiaoyu peeled the mask off. Her voice came out thin.
"Ruoxi... where did you get all of that?"
