Chapter 29: The Weight of His Shadow

830 Words
The doors of the elevator shut, trapping me inside the tiny space with Ethan. My chest felt completely crushed under an invisible, suffocating weight. Alpha King Ethan stood towering right beside me, his massive, radiating heat completely dominating the small enclosure. The rich, intoxicating scent of cedar and dark ash rolled off his broad shoulders, flooding my senses and triggering a sudden, violent wave of early morning pregnancy nausea. The elevator jolted slightly as it passed the upper executive floors, and my knees buckled. My balance completely shattered, forcing me to tightly grip the polished brass handrail to keep from collapsing onto the floor. Before my fingers could even lock around the metal, a large, calloused hand anchored firmly around my waist. With effortless, terrifying strength, Ethan pulled my frame flush against the solid rock of his chest."You are shaking, Aria," Ethan growled, his deep baritone dropping into a rough, gravelly rumble that vibrated against my ribs. His nostrils flared slightly as he openly scented the air around us, trying to read the raw terror bleeding through my scent mask. "Your pulse is hammering against my palm like a trapped bird. What happened in that infirmary wing?" "Nothing," I shot back, forcing my voice to remain icy and unyielding through sheer, agonizing willpower despite the electric shockwaves rushing through my veins at his physical touch. I flatly pressed my palms against his hard chest, desperately trying to push his suffocating warmth away. "I told you, I told you earlier, i am just exhausted. Ethan didn't utter another word as the elevator door slid open. Ignoring my physical resistance completely, he swept his large arm beneath my knees, lifting me effortlessly into his embrace and marching across the polished marble floor toward the massive canopy bed. He set me down gently onto the dark velvet sheets, but he didn't pull away. Instead, he dropped to his knees right in front of me, his massive form towering over my lap as his large hands personally unbuckled my boots and slid them off my feet. The sheer, tender possessiveness of the gesture tore my heart into jagged, bleeding pieces. I sat frozen, staring down at his dark, styled hair, a wave of profound grief crashing through my soul. He was showing me the devotion of a true fated mate–entirely unaware that I was a woman drowning in secrets, currently calculating exactly how to betray him and flee his territory to escape a fatal birth curse. "Do not lie to me, little bird," what did your father say to you in the infirmary?" My heart stumbled violently against my ribs, cold dread freezing the blood in my veins. The ultimate predator of the werewolf world was cross-examining me, and a single wrong syllable would shatter our fragile peace. I looked right back into his burning amber eyes, locking my defensive mask of compliance perfectly in place as I delivered a calculated, seamless lie. "He is terrified, Ethan," I murmured softly, letting a trace of genuine vulnerability soften my voice to make the deception absolute. "He spent years being tortured in Richard's deepest dungeons. He wakes up in a luxury medical wing surrounded by royal enforcers, and his mind can't process the safety. He whispered to me that he is terrified Richard is still going to hunt us. He wants us to flee because he thinks our presence will bring a war to your palace gates." Ethan stared at me in a long, suffocating silence, his nostrils flaring as he weighed my words against the heavy silence of the room. The dark muscle along his scarred jaw jumped violently, his protective Alpha aura flaring with an unyielding, territorial heat. "Let Richard send an entire army to my borders," Ethan hissed, his voice dropping into a low, lethal promise that rattled the window panes. He reached out, his thumb gently tracing the curve of my bottom lip with a fierce, absolute claim that turned my blood to liquid fire. "I will paint the palace trenches in their blood before I let a single threat cross your shadow. You are safe beneath my crown, Aria. Tell your father that the Lycan King does not negotiate with snakes, and he does not let his woman run." He leaned down, pressing a slow, heavy kiss against my forehead that felt like a permanent brand on my soul, before turning to stride into his adjoining study to handle the border security logs. I watched his towering silhouette vanish behind the heavy oak doors, my breath finally rushing out of my lungs in a sharp gasp. I had survived his interrogation for now, but as my hand remained pressed over my stomach, the crushing reality of my fate settled deeper into my bones. He would tear the world apart to keep me here–which meant breaking this ancient generational curse and escaping his shadow was going to be the most dangerous war I would ever have to fight.
