Chapter 16: The Velvet Cage

1603 Words
The morning sun did not gently bleed into the Lycan King’s master suite; it cut. Heavy, razor-thin beams of blinding gold sliced through the gaps in the crimson velvet curtains, illuminating the slow, rhythmic dance of dust motes suspended in the air. The room still smelled heavily of their fated-mating, a thick, intoxicating musk of rain-soaked cedar, crushed mint, and the sharp, metallic tang of raw, predatory sweat. The silk sheets of the massive, elevated bed were tangled, torn in places where claws had dragged through the expensive weave during the fever of the night. Aria stood five feet away from the mattress, the freezing dawn air hitting her bare, flushed skin like a physical slap. Yet, she didn’t shiver. Beneath the surface of her flesh, a newly awakened royal Lycan aura thrummed, a dark violet static heat that hissed against the cold atmosphere of the room. The air around her actually crackled, smelling faintly of ozone and impending lightning. She looked around the vast, suffocating luxury of Ethan’s private sanctuary. The perfectly tended hearth, where the dying embers of ancient oak still popped and whistled. The plush, thick-pile rugs that absorbed the sound of her pacing feet. The gold-leaf molding tracking the high perimeter of the ceiling. A sudden, crushing wave of grief hit her so hard it stole the oxygen straight from her lungs, turning instantly into a white-hot, blinding rage. Her inner wolf, Luna, was no longer a dormant whisper; she was a monstrous, pacing entity behind Aria’s ribs, her ethereal claws scraping against her chest cavity, snarling frantically for immediate blood. Aria turned on her heel, her gaze locking onto the man still lying amidst the ruined silk. "You sleep here," she whispered, the sound cracking, a fragile pane of glass fracturing under immense pressure. She gestured wildly around the room, her hand trembling as she took a step backward, away from him, away from the warmth he radiated. "You sleep in a king-sized bed, under sheets that cost more than a pack’s winter rations. You wake up to the crackle of a hearth and the smell of cedar." Ethan shifted, the muscles of his back tightening, but Aria didn't let him speak. The words tore from her throat, raw and dripping with twenty-one years of unadulterated agony. "While you lie here, my father, Alpha Marcus, has spent twenty-one long, agonizing years rotting on a freezing, silver-stained concrete floor! He hasn't seen the sun, Ethan! He hasn't felt warmth! The silver is in his veins, eating him from the inside out while you rule an empire from a velvet mattress!" Luna screamed within her, a deafening howl that demanded she tear something apart. The contrast between this royal opulence and the dark, damp, subterranean hellhole where her father was being systematically tortured broke something fundamental inside her. The grief was a physical weight, a suffocating hand wrapped tight around her throat. The mattress groaned as Ethan rose. He didn’t just stand; he unfolded, his massive seven-foot frame dominating the room as he stepped out of the bed. The moment his bare feet struck the hardwood floor, a protective, suffocating alpha gravity rolled off him in waves, heavy enough to alter the room's atmospheric pressure. The air grew thick, hard to breathe, heavy with the absolute command of the Lycan King. He closed the distance between them with terrifying, silent grace. Before she could strike out, his large, scarred hands came down firmly on her shoulders. His grip was an immovable vice, not intended to hurt, but designed to anchor her spinning world. His dark obsidian eyes, completely black as his wolf pushed to the surface, were wide with an intense, unwavering focus. "Aria, look at me," Ethan commanded, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that vibrated through her own chest. He was trying to inject cold, military logic into a situation burning with emotional third-degree burns. "Listen to my voice. Marching our legions across the southern border right now, without the shadow scouts' full intelligence, is a reckless suicide mission. It is exactly what Richard wants." "I don't care about Richard!" she screamed, twisting violently in his grip, but his fingers held fast, molding to her skin like iron bands. "You will care when the casualties pile up in the thousands," Ethan barked back, his tone dropping into the frigid, unyielding register of a general. "The exact second Alpha Richard hears the first blast of the imperial war horns crossing his ridge, he will not fight us. He will walk down into that sub-basement and put a silver bullet directly into Marcus's head. He will destroy the evidence and your father’s life before our vanguard can even clear the tree line. Is that what you want? To hand your father his execution warrant?" His chest heaved against hers, his scent of cedar and ozone trying to wrap around her, to tame the dark violet static still spitting from her skin. "Give me time. Give me forty-eight hours to map the tunnels, to ensure a flawless rescue where he leaves that compound alive. I am ordering you to stand down, Aria." The word ordering snapped the final thread of her sanity. Aria blind-snapped. The grief mutated entirely into a feral, royal defiance that rejected his alpha gravity, her own violet aura flaring so violently it cast long, dancing shadows against the crimson curtains. "Your crown has made you soft," she spat, her voice deadly quiet now, every syllable coated in venom. She looked him dead in his black, ancient eyes, her gaze unwavering, completely detached from the bond that connected their souls. "It has made you a coward, Ethan. If your comfortable throne has made you too afraid to protect your queen’s bloodline, then keep your legions. Keep your shadow scouts. I don't need your army." Ethan’s jaw clenched so hard the bone looked ready to shatter through his skin. "Aria, do not finish that sentence." "I will cross the border by nightfall," she vowed, her voice ringing with the absolute authority of a royal line that owed him nothing. "And I will tear the Silver Moon packhouse down stone by stone, with my bare goddamned hands, until I dig my father out of the dirt. Try and stop me." For a fraction of a second, the room was dead silent. The only sound was the dying hiss of the hearth. Then, Ethan’s obsidian eyes flashed with a terrifying, ancient royal alpha authority, the primal power of the first lineage. He didn't scream back. He didn't waste breath on an argument she was too broken to hear. Instead, using his raw physical dominance, he moved with a speed that defied his massive size. Before Aria could register the shift in weight, she was lifted completely off her feet. He effortlessly swept her slender frame into his arms, pinning her arms against her sides with one massive forearm while his other hand locked beneath her knees. "Let me go!" she shrieked, her inner wolf howling in absolute outrage at the confinement. She thrashed violently, her fists pounding against the granite-hard muscles of his chest, her nails clawing at his shoulders, drawing thin lines of crimson beads that healed almost instantly. "Put me down, you bastard! Let me go!" Ethan ignored her entirely. His face was a mask of cold, unyielding stone as he marched out of his suite. He kicked the heavy master doors open, his long strides carrying him across the grand, vaulted corridor of the imperial wing. The castle guards stationed at the pillars immediately dropped their heads, their eyes glued to the floor, sensing the lethal aura radiating from their King. They didn't dare breathe as their sovereign passed. Aria continued to strike him, her knuckles bruising against his chest, her voice growing hoarse as she screamed insults, demands, and pleas that all shattered against his silence. He reached the heavy oak double doors of her private royal chambers. With a single, brutal kick, he threw them open, strode into the center of the plush, silk-draped room, and set her down on her feet. Before she could lunge past him, Ethan stepped back toward the threshold, creating a wide chasm of space between them. He looked at her through the doorway, his eyes no longer completely black, but swimming with a heavy, heartbroken, yet immovably protective promise. The sheer weight of his sorrow mirrored her own, but his resolve was a mountain that nothing could move. "I will let you hate me for the rest of our fated lives, Aria," Ethan said, his voice thick, rough, and absolute. "But I will never let you march to your death." He stepped backward out of the threshold, his gaze holding hers for one final, devastating millisecond. Then, he slammed the heavy oak double doors shut. Thud. The sound was a death knell in the quiet corridor. A second later, the sharp, definitive, mechanical click of the heavy silver deadbolt sliding into place echoed through the thick wood. Aria lunged, throwing her entire body weight against the door, her palms slapping against the impenetrable wood. "Ethan! Open this door! Ethan!" There was no response from the other side, only the faint, fading sound of heavy, imperial boots walking away down the stone corridor. She was trapped. Locked inside a gilded, velvet cage of her own making, surrounded by luxury while her father bled in the dark. Aria threw her head back, a raw, animalistic scream of pure rage ripping from her throat as she pounded her bleeding fists against the locked door, the sound echoing uselessly into the empty, opulent room.
