Chapter 21: The Alpha's Fury

866 Words
The silence inside the northern tower was the first thing that tipped Alpha Ethan off. It wasn’t a peaceful, quiet silence; it was a heavy, hollow stillness that smelled faintly of cold ash and faded lavender. His large hand froze on the heavy brass handle of Aria's bedroom door. The fated-mate spark that usually crackled beneath his skin whenever he neared her room felt suddenly numb, cold, and dead. A dark, predatory instinct clawed at the walls of his chest. His wolf, midnight-black and feral, growled low in his mind, baring its phantom fangs. Gone. Ethan slammed his boot against the oak door, kicking it completely off its iron hinges. The wood splintered violently across the room, crashing onto the marble floor like shrapnel. He strode through the dust, his pitch-black military cloak billowing behind his massive frame like living shadows. His intense, amber eyes swept the chamber in a ruthless, sweeping assessment. The bed was neatly made, untouched. The iron bars on the window were perfectly intact. But the small, silk traveling cloak he had personally gifted her was missing from the wardrobe. On the nightstand sat her silver pack crest ring–the one thing linking her to his territory–left behind on the polished wood like a deliberate insult. She hadn't been taken. She hadn't been ambushed. Aria had systematically planned her escape from his palace under the dead of night. "Aria," Ethan whispered her name, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that vibrated so hard the crystal chandeliers overhead began to shatter and chime. A wave of raw, unadulterated Alpha aura exploded from his chest, rolling through the stone corridors of the pack house like a physical shockwave. Outside, several lower-ranking wolves immediately dropped to their knees in the dirt, whimpering and cowering as his psychological dominance crushed the perimeter. The air inside the bedroom grew sub-zero, dense, and impossible to breathe. The heavy stone steps outside rattled as Beta Kael rushed through the shattered entrance, his chest heaving, his face pale with pure terror. "Alpha... the border patrol just reported a breach in the southern mist forest. The silver chains in the cell blocks were cut from the inside." Ethan didn't turn around. His jaw tightened so violently a muscle leaped in his chiseled cheek, his fists clenching until his knuckles popped like gunfire. The sheer, suffocating rage burning through his veins was hot enough to melt stone. One betrayal had already torn her original pack apart, but this–her running away from him, denying the absolute authority of the bond–was a declaration of war. "Bring me the guards who were stationed at the eastern gate," Ethan commanded deathly softly. The quietness of his voice was infinitely more terrifying than a shout, the tone of an apex predator marking its kill. "Alpha, they–" Kael hesitated, swallowing hard. "They were found unconscious by the river. She used a rare wolfsbane mist to suppress their tracking senses." A dark, chilling smile tugged at the corner of Ethan's mouth, but his amber eyes burned with a lethal, possessive fire. "She thinks she is clever. She thinks a few miles of dark pine forest and a handful of herbs can hide a forbidden Luna from her supreme Alpha." He turned on his heel, his towering frame completely swallowing Kael's light as he strode toward the display racks on the wall. He ripped his heavy, blood-stained broadsword from the iron hooks, the silver blade glinting under the dim lantern light. "Assemble the elite elite enforcers," Ethan barked, his voice rolling through the stone halls like thunder. "Lock down every single passage out of the northern territory. No one enters. No one leaves. If a single rival pack leader offers her shelter, I will burn their entire pack house to the ground and sow their fields with salt." "Alpha, the council warned that crossing into the neutral territories could spark an empire-wide slaughter," Kael pleaded, stepping back as Ethan's aura flared dangerously. "Let the empire burn," Ethan whispered, his breath hot against the cold winter air. He strode past his second-in-command without looking down, his combat boots crushing the splintered wood beneath him with a rhythmic, chilling crunch. "She belongs under my shadow. No one touches her, no one questions her, and no one takes her from me. I will hunt her to the absolute edge of the earth, and when I lock my hands around her waist again, she will finally learn what happens when a prey tries to run from its master." He marched out into the gray, bleak dawn, leaving his pack house in an absolute panic. Outside, thunder rolled heavily across the dark horizon, mirroring the feral storm trapped beneath his skin. He could still smell her lingering scent of rain and sweet lavender on the wind, a faint trail leading straight into the treacherous southern valley. He would find her before the moon reached its peak, completely unaware that the real countdown had already altered its course, and a miracle heir grew in silence elsewhere–but for now, the hunt was officially on, and anyone standing between him and his queen would drown in blood.
