At the airport the following morning, Hamilton Gray, a man of average height, handsome and good looking, came out of the airport. He had flown down to Quebec just as he promised Mason on the phone.
After he had come out with the mixed crowd and was now standing by the roadside waiting for the vehicle that was sent to pick him.
John Adkins sighted him from across the road where he stood by a SUV vehicle. Instantly, he was able to recognize him due to the description which his boss had told him. So he rushed over to where Hamilton stood, "Welcome sir. I believe you are Mr Hamilton?"
"Yes I am."
"I'm John Adkins and was sent by my boss, Mr Mason Heron to pick you. The car is over there." John helps him with his bag as he leads the way over to the other side of the road.
After John had placed the baggage in the truck, he opened the car's door for Hamilton.
"I'd love to sit in the front." Hamilton opens the door for himself and gets in.
That action caused John to be surprised, he never expected such from a man of Hamilton's caliber. But all the same, he turned to the driver's seat and then kicked off the engine.
Some mile away, Hamilton engaged in a conversation with John while he was staring. Due to the conversation, John's attention was totally divided and his eyes were no longer on the road. Soon he forcefully hit the break, but it was too late, he had already knocked down a young girl.
"Oh my gosh… oh my gosh…" he cried as he came out of the car to see the young girl.
Instantly, a call for the ambulance was made and they soon arrived. So the child was rushed to the nearest hospital, and Hamilton had to divert his destination. He took full blame and responsibility for what had happened since it was all his fault. If he had not engaged John in that conversation which took his focus, then none of that would have happened.
The accident caused John to be afraid since a lot of things went through his thoughts but Hamilton was of a great help in encouraging him and giving him some assurance.
After a very long time, as the time was going towards one noon John's cell phone rang and when he took a look at who was calling, he was unable to pick up.
When the phone had rang the second and third time without him picking up, Hamilton was forced to ask because they were both at the hospital, waiting to receive words from the medical personnel concerning the little girl who had been taken in the emergency room. "Why aren't you picking the phone?"
Then John looked up at Hamilton, then at his phone which was on the bench beside him and again he returned his face towards the ground without uttering a word.
Then the phone rang again for the fourth time.
"Who is it?"
"It's my boss. He's probably worried about us."
"Then pick up."
"I don't know what to say."
"Pick it up and pass it to me."
But before he could answer the call, it was already over.
"Just give me the phone if it rings again."
And immediately it began to ring once more so John passed the phone to Hamilton.
"Why haven't you been picking my calls?! You kept me worried!" Mason sounded angrily through the phone.
"It's okay Mason. We're fine." Hamilton said calmly.
Recognizing the voice, Mason controlled his anger. "O Hamilton, that's you. Where is John and why hasn't he been picking?"
"He is right here with me. There was an emergency but it's under control."
"What happened?!"
"Nothing much. Like I said, it is being taken care of. I'll explain to you later."
"Okay, can I speak with John now?"
"Umm…." Hamilton took a quick look at John and his countenance showed that he is not still in a talking mode. "I don't think so."
"Is he alright?"
"Of course. Can we continue this when we meet in person?"
"Alright, just hope the both of you are okay."
"Sure," Hamilton hangs up and returns the phone to John.
Short of words, John simply appreciated, "thank you sir. I don't know what I'd say."
"It's alright."
Then a female doctor who had been attending to the little girl in the emergency room finally came out. "Which amongst you is the parent of the child?"
"None of us," Hamilton simply replied. "She was knocked by my car, so you can tell us anything, I'll take responsibility while we find her parents."
"Is she alive?" John asked out of fear because he was beginning to think negatively because of the way the doctor sounded.
"She's still breathing," the doctor looked at John and from his appearance she could tell that he was the one driving because of the magnitude of fear seen in him.
Then both John and Hamilton exhaled in relief after hearing that the girl was still alive.
"Can we see her now?"
"Sure, but you'll have to find her parents so they would know what had happened to their child."
"Of course we will." They both chorused.
Then the doctor left them and instantly two nurses came out of the room while they walked in to see the little girl.

In the evening on that same day, Edythe returns home late as usual and sees that Rica was not on the bed or the reading table where she always was whenever she returned.
"Rica…. I'm home," she calls as she checks the kitchen and bathroom but yet she was not there. In fact the whole place was the same way it was when they both left the house in the morning, meaning that Rica had not returned from school upto that time of the day. It was a few minutes past ten o'clock in the evening.
"Rica… Rica…. Where are you?" Edythe continued to call as she refused to believe that her daughter wasn't home yet. She even went further in going around the house and neighborhood asking after Rica.
After she had asked a few neighbors and they told her that they had not seen Rica throughout the whole day, she had no other option than to believe what her instinct had told her when she checked the house.
At this point, Edythe was restless and full of worries, she did not know where to begin in searching for her child. Rica was all she got and without her, she didn't know how she could continue living.
After a very long time she finally thought of what to do. She brought out her phone and searched for the number of the school authorities, the principal to be precise. When finally she had dialed the number, there was no response so she had to leave a message.
"Hello, this is Edythe, Rica's mother. I'm calling to check on my daughter. She hasn't returned home so I was wondering if you could help. Please give me a call when you receive this."
And then she continued her search even when she did not know where to start. She just couldn't return home without her daughter.
