Rules Of The Game

The sitting room door flung open. And the person I had been expecting stepped in. " Welcome back." I said. He walked towards the stairs without giving me a reply. " I have something to discuss with you. " He stopped halfway and turned back to face me. " What do you want." I sniffed. " Can you come over to sit." " I don't have time for that. " " Please." He pulled out his cross bag from his shoulder. Why would a CEO go to work with a cross bag. " You've only a minute. " I cleared my throats and took in a quick breath. " I need to go back to school. " I said in a haste. He looked away trying to process what I just said. " No. That's not part of the contract." " I know I wanted to tell you but... but." I stammered. He stared straight into my eyes for some seconds. " You can only on one condition." I froze. " What condition? " He stood up from the couch. " Ask me that later." I watched as he climbed up the stairs without looking back. My heart trembled. I hope it's not a terrible condition again. The door clicked shut behind him. I shifted my position on the bed. " My sister is home so you're going to sleep here." " What did you say?" I sat upright. I had been expecting him to introduce me to my new room and now he's saying this. " You heard me right, miss. You can have the couch to yourself." He added. " On the couch? I won't be comfortable." " So where do you expect you can sleep." I paused. " Maybe another room." " Stop trying to be stubborn, miss. You sleep on the couch and that's final. " I watched him pull off his watch and walked into the bath room. " You can't just.." I clenched my fists I held tight my purse and walked towards the couch. The bathroom door flung open. " I almost forgot." He said and walked to the mirror stand. " Take." he stretched out a golden case. I took it from him and opened it. My eyes widened. I met with something beautiful. An expensive, diamond, eye catchy ring. " My family are visiting tomorrow. " " Your family? " “You will follow the rules,” he said ignoring my question. “In public, you stay close to me. You smile when required. You speak only when spoken to." “And in private?” I asked " You stay out of my way." I swallowed. " And that ring. It belongs to you for the months you stay with me." " But I..can't wear a ring in school. " " I never said you should. " " But...you just said..." I hiccupped. He tightened his jaw and walked to the bed. " Rule number two. I hate petty talks." He flung the duvet over himself. " Put off the light before you sleep." I heard him say. My hands clenched into fists. I stared at the well fixed ceiling. The light was still on. Sleep refused to come. I couldn't when I hadn't figured out what I was in. My heart pounded when I heard a sharp knock on the door. I froze. My back hitting the couch. The bed shifted. He was awake. I heard the knock again. He pulled away the duvet, stood up and stretched out. His slippers hit the floor gently as he walked towards the door. He turned back halfway to face me. " I would be back and don't get too curious." The door flung shut. I glanced at my watch. 2:35am. The morning light pierced through the open windows. I heard a ruffling sound from the bed. He was back. " Responsible workers are already at work." I sniffed. " Good morning. " His gaze shifted from me to his phone. I was already used to his silent replies. I stood up, stretched and wore my sneakers. " Can I borrow your bathroom for a minute? " His gaze met with mine. " You're lucky she's still home." I blinked my eyelashes rapidly and hurried into the bath room. The moment I walked out the bathroom I met with his dangerous gaze. " My family is here," he said. " Remember the rules. " He tossed a dress at me. " Wear that." I caught it, stunned. " And don't say more than you shouldn't." He slammed the door and walked out. I dressed up and added finishing touches. I turned to face the mirror. I smiled. Perfect. I could hear rumbling sounds as I shut the door. " What is she doing up there for almost an hour. " I heard a voice. Their gaze fell on me as they heard sound on the steps. " Hey darling, come over. " Adrian said. I swallowed hard and walked to sit with him. " I don't know why you would end up with someone like her." I heard his sister speak. " Would you stop talking about her that way, Linda." I leaned closer to him. " What's your name." I heard a sharp voice from his father. " I'm Clara." I replied. " It's a nice name though." He said staring at his wife. The word though reechoed. My eyes shifted from him to his wife. " Yes, we are glad Adrian is settling with someone at last." " With this wretched? His sister screamed out. My ears rang. How dare she call me that. " Enough of this Linda. " Adrian defended. " But you can't settle with this." " Who I settle with is none of your business. " " But you aren't settling with her we both know that." I put my self in place even as the words sliced through me. " Because he's not ready to break the promise. "
