Chapter Six
Meikah stared at Kellan’s hands that continued to hold hers, trying to see more than shadows. She could easily imagine what her parents would say if they caught her sneaking out of the house. “I can’t.” She was already in enough trouble.
“The man you saved, he tried to get a bodyguard. They refused to help him.”
“Why?” She tried to convince herself to pull her hand from his light grip.
“Because he’s unimportant. Only a town guard. There’s more than enough of them that losing a single guard won’t matter to most.”
“Surely if he asked again-”
“It won’t make a difference. I’ll take you to him. He’s with Danton and wants to thank you.” Kellan chuckled. “He’s not all that impressed with Mace or me. Said he better not catch us up to no good again when he’s on patrol.”
