FIFTEEN YEARS AGO
Jane: I can’t marry you.
Four words... that’s it. That’s all she’d texted him.
Jane stared at the screen, waiting for some sort of divine inspiration to hit. Something that would tell her the words she needed to say to Paul to make him understand. She couldn’t leave it at those four words. He’d need some kind of explanation.
Maybe even an apology for her crappy behaviour.
Jane curled her lips into an amused half-smile as she anticipated his response: You’re kidding, right?
But nothing came. There was no response to her text even as she waited for the follow-up.
There was no response from Paul. Jane wasn’t sure how she felt about that.
