Chapter 6: Almost To The Point

687 Words
Cutting a long conversation short- Nick walked into the town hall and said he would do it. Well he nodded and Mary smiled and said ‘thank you, you will make good sheriff.’ Then Nick grunted for a while and Mary asked all of us who would like to be the main sheriff so Nick can be deputy. I guess that was fair at the time since sheriff is a lot to handle. People said a bunch of other people should be the sheriff since their leadership skills would complement Nick’s, or at least give him enough confidence to show that he actually can do a good job even if it is only for himself to see so. You see, Nick would be a good choice since running a farm is not a poor leader’s job and the past farms in the town were never doing so hot. So… what’s his name?...The other fella who was telling you the tale? It’ll come to me. So, anyway that exact fella stepped forward and said he would be the sheriff. There was a pause and people agreed since, between you and me, he was a crazy go-getter who would get all done regardless of how much blood he lost. You need one of ém on your side to get stuff done. And that is how… what’s his name… and Nick became temporary sheriff and deputy. However, the sun was slowly popping up her head from behind the faraway hills and we have not yet made a plan to take down Michelle and his people. But Nick and WhatsHisFace decided to meet up with Michelle anyway and stall for some more time. They arrived at the spot where they have first met Michelle yesterday. The sun was up in the sky decided it wanted a closer view of the action. But the roaster was still asleep. It was not much of a morning bird which is strange for his kind. The town folks hide in wooden houses on either side of the one road through the town. The dust was gently blowing across the faces of the two men who stood proud with their feet firmly on the ground. Surprised that no dust ever flew into anyone’s eyes. The rooster crowed as if it had finally waked up. And we waited. Silence. More silence. People’s brows were sweating, while other’s eyes blinked and darted side to side. Silence. “Don’t we still have an hour?”, said a child’s voice that broke the tension driven silence. We all murmured to each other, at each other wondering how the entire town could be one fool. Mary popped up from behind the few donkeys that we had and called us to her for a quick meeting. Mary has a plan to call a quick meeting but that was it. She looked at WhatsHisFace and Nick for an answer or something. Nick looked at his sheriff and grunted something but, of course, WhatsHisFace could not understand a sound of it and just shook his head. Right there and then we all finally decided to develop a communication system. We never did before because all our conversations with Nick were merely greeting and thank you nods and Nick would usually write down when he was not clear when he was out without his wife and son. But this is the one time he had no paper. So we learnt a new version of sign language that only we understood since none of us knew the traditional version. Thinking back it was a strange use of our limited time but we all panic and did the first thing we though. After we had learnt it Nick was able to tell his plan and we were a lot more calmer to get it and do it. So it worked out in the end. Oh... he’s back. He'll tell you about the plan... since I actually forgot, to be blunt.
