The Songs Of Paradise

I just couldn’t remember where I had seen her. I tried to remember but anytime I felt I was close, it just slipped away. I finally gave up until I heard her speak. “Do you recognize me” she asked and Wendy turned to look at me weirdly. “Uhh…no. I’m trying. Can you help?” I asked. “I’m the girl you bumped into earlier today at the New Block” she said and everything immediately fell into place. “ooh…I see. I’m sorry about today. I was in a hurry” I apologized. “I could see that. No need to apologize” she said and I only nodded. Wendy turned to me and gave me the ‘I’m watching you’ sign. I just laughed it off. That night, the little witc—err friend decided to spend the night and the next day with me so as to disturb my life. It wasn’t the first time she was staying with me so it was normal. We agreed that Iris would take her car home while we use mine. The next day, the cleaning company disturbed our sleep at 8am, waking us up. Wendy had decided to prepare stew and other foods for me the previous night so we went out to get stuffs from the Accra Makola market while the cleaners did their job. The ride to and from the Makola market took us about three hours since there was no traffic due to the holidays. Wendy prepared different kinds of stew and soup that would last me for almost two weeks. She packed them and put them in freezer. As a thank you, I decided to take her out to an evening beach to her favorite beach club. She insisted we bring her cousin because she recently moved into the country and might be lonely. I agreed. We left for the beach around 5pm. We checked in and I booked a table with everything we’d need. We ate talked and had fun. Wendy suggested we go swim but I declined and told her I’d watch her rather. Iris also stepped out of it with an excuse of a headache. Fortunately, she found some of her course mates and chose to swim with them. We both sat there, a few minutes of total silence with only the surrounding noise and the sea breeze that could be heard. “So…you and Wendy. Are you a thing” Iris asked looking straight at me.
