CHAPTER TWO

"Mr. and Mrs. Andrews as my assistant has already told you over the phone the results are have arrived from the lab", he says, "I am sorry to say that..." At that instant, I feel a panic rushing all over me. My mother breaks down into a hysterical cry, soaking my father's shirt with her tears. "Mrs. Andrews please calm down and give me the chance to speak" he urges whilst handing my father tissues to hand to my mother. My mother turns to him whilst rubbing her tears. "What more can you possibly say? " she asks with a hoarse voice from all that wailing. "My daughter is in there slowly dying and there's nothing we can do but watch" "Ma'am calm down, you are forgetting that we tested the three of you" the doctor cuts into my mother's words. Just then I remember that he didn’t mention my results. Pam and I are twins surely if not my parents, then surely I have to be a match. "As I was saying we also tested Sam and she is a match, now we will be taking her, with your consent of course to surgery to extract and transfer one of her kidneys to Sam" the doctor explains A few minutes later, the same nurse from before, nurse Julie, guides me down the hallway to a vacant room where she hands me the hospital gown. All though I am glad that my sister will be fine after this, I am also scared. I have never been in surgery before. A lot of questions are running through my mind. A lot of "what if's". What if I don’t survive? What if we both die during surgery? What if my other kidney fails after some time? What if I never wake up? "Don’t worry dear", the nurse says as she snaps me from my endless what-ifs. "This is a very safe procedure, both you and your sister will be fine" "Thank you nurse Julie, that really means a lot", I sigh.  After she leaves I put on the gown and say a little prayer to ease my nerves. I realize now that my hands are shaking. That’s why she said not to worry, she must have seen my hands. After dressing up I lay down on the bed trying to calm myself down. Moments later, my parents arrive with the doctor. "Hey sweetie", mom pats my head, "the doctor explained the process to us, soon you will be with your sister again" "Don’t worry yourself miha, you will be out before you know it", my dad says as he plants a kiss on my forehead. "All right let’s get you to the theatre," the doctor says as two female porters push my bed out the door to another room. Once we get there, the surgeon covers my mouth with a mask.  "Now count down from ten" he instructs. Before I can even reach six, I am pulled into a deep slumber. ..................................................................................................................................................................................................................... After what seemed like ages I woke up...my eyes opened just enough. I quickly scan my surroundings whilst adjusting to the light in the room. To my greatest pleasure, Pam's bed is on my left. She is no longer hooked to all those many tubes. She seems to be asleep. My parents are also asleep on the couch beside the window facing Pam and me. Mom is sleeping with her head on dad's lap. They look cute together. "Aww, if I had my phone I would take a picture", I blurt out loud. "Right, it’s been a while since we saw them like this" I snap my head to the left. Pam is awake looking at mom and dad. "Pam?! You are awake!" I say with excitement.  Mom and dad both wake up and look at us. Mom suddenly bursts into tears and comes to our beds. "Ohh Pam, Sam, you had us worried," she says. She kisses Pam's forehead and moves onto mine. My dad also does the same and goes out to call the doctor.  "I am so glad you both are okay", she says whilst rubbing her tears. "I am just glad to see you both" Pam says. She flashes a smile. She always had the most charming smile. "Glad to see everyone smiling," the doctor says. "That means my work is almost complete" "Doctor when we do we get to go home," I ask. The past few days have been nothing but torture on all of us. I just want to go home and move on with life forgetting all that has happened. "Well let’s give your bodies a chance to adjust to the change and if everything goes well you should be out in three days" he concludes whilst checking our vitals. "All good here let me leave you two to rest"  The doctor leaves. "Mom, dad why don’t you guys go home and freshen up" Pam suggests. They look a bit hesitant. "Yes mom you look tired besides you heard what the doctor said we are healing just fine" I add before my mother can say anything. "I think the girls are right Mi Amor lets go and freshen up hmm? What do you say?", My dad asks. "Ohh alright let’s go but we are coming back as soon as possible, I don’t want to be away from my babies for long," my mom says. But you can still see that she is hesitating. "Love you guys" Pam and I say in unison. “I love you too Sammy” I love you too Pam”, I say and smile. ..................................................................................................................................................................................................................... After mom and dad left Pam and I had a small chat before she dozed off. I didn’t even realize when I fell asleep. When I wake up Pam is not in her bed and nurse Julie is checking my vitals. Panic immediately arises. Where is she? "Nurse Julie, where's my sister?", I ask “Ohh honey, she was moved to the ICU while you were sleeping," she says with pity in her tone "What do you mean ICU? What happened to her? Where is she? I want to see my sister now!" I say as I rip off the IV tube from my arm in an attempt to go to Pam. "Calm down sweetie the doctor is attending to her now" All of a sudden its lights out for me before I could ask any more questions. When I wake up,4 dad is comforting mom who is sobbing uncontrollably. "Mom, what’s going on? Dad, why is she crying?" I ask  "Sam sweetie it’s your sister Pam she umm" "What’s wrong with her? Is she still in the ICU?" I ask "She didn’t make it Miha, her body rejected the kidney and before the doctors could save her she was already gone", he says. A tear drops from his eyes. "No that’s not true, it can’t be true" "Pam is dead Miha" A painful lump blocks my throat blocking all the words. I am paralyzed with shock. Pam is not dead, she can’t leave me.
