The William Spain family were all reunited after that fateful evening three months previously when their ship, the Prince Rupert, ran aground in Table Bay, South Africa. During their rescue they were transferred by ship to Algoa Bay, where plans were made to continue their journey to New Zealand. Some possessions were lost, some were salvaged, but by the grace of God the entire family was spared.
Eventually the two hundred and eighty-three ton brig Antilla was chartered to transport the Spain family, and others who were displaced, to New Zealand. A few passengers decided they'd had enough and would not continue their journey, instead choosing to remain in South Africa.
