Just as the townspeople had become accustomed to Princess Genoa's presence, she too was familiar with the dragons. Her father, His Majesty the King, frequently consulted with Uilliam, a magnificent dragon often invited to palace celebrations. However, the princess had never really connected with the dragons. She wasn't afraid; it was just that her father had strictly forbidden it. Legend had it that anyone who could awaken the heart of a dragon could become its lifelong companion, and the King feared that with her unique gift, Genoa might unintentionally stir a dragon's slumbering heart. Uilliam was aware of the king's worries and had vowed to keep the princess safe from any potential trouble his kind might cause. The other dragons stayed clear of the princess thanks to Uilliam's protection, eager not to offend their formidable guardian.
The townsfolk have always had a soft spot for Ioulos. Despite his stern demeanor, he's always there to lend a hand to anyone in need, whether they're one of his kin or a human. Whenever he roams the streets, people of all ages shout his name, offering their greetings or gifts. The young dragon, accustomed to this warmth, nods in return, appreciating the affection. Although he'd heard tales of Princess Genoa, he'd never felt a strong pull to know her. On the other hand, his loyal friend Nahum is captivated by her magical presence because, unlike Ioulos, he yearns to reclaim his lost humanity.
Ioulos noticed Nahum gazing longingly at the princess. Anticipating his friend's imminent excitement, Ioulos quickly called out to him.
"Come on, give it a rest, buddy," he teased, a playful grin spreading across his face.
"What do you mean?" Nahum attempted to feign innocence.
Ioulos chuckled, "Oh, you know she's out of reach of you."
Blushing from embarrassment, Nahum tried to sound casual, "Who's out of reach?"
"Whatever! Let's head to the other side of town before Uilliam sends for us," Ioulos said, playfully prodding Nahum with his horn.
"Why do you always switch plans at the last minute? Fine, you lead, and I'll follow," Nahum replied, pretending to be annoyed.
Just as Ioulos readied his wings for takeoff, he caught a glimpse of the princess looking back at him. At that moment, a flicker of impulse surged through him, making him feel the sudden need to breathe fire. Realizing he had to leave town quickly for the sake of both the townspeople and himself, he made a decision.
With each passing day, Princess Genoa grew more fascinated by these magnificent creatures, likely because she had yet to interact with one. She wanted to understand their thoughts, meet their gaze, learn how they harness their fire, and hear their tales. She simply longed for a genuine conversation.
It frustrated her to watch the two young dragons soar away, knowing she'd missed yet another chance to connect with them. "What on earth can I do to greet a dragon myself?" She wondered aloud.
"Your Highness! I'm sorry to interrupt, but you do know that your father, the King, has strictly forbidden you from meeting any dragons. Not even the grand Uilliam," Oliva, her attendant, said, concern evident in her voice.
"Relax, Oliva. My father isn't here to keep tabs on me, and besides, the dragons have already taken off. There's nothing to worry about. I was just musing," the princess reassured her.
Olivia took a deep breath, still worried but calming down a bit. "Forgive me, Your Highness. I know you're fascinated by these incredible creatures, but your father only wants to keep you safe. That's why we're all here to protect you from them."
The princess, moved by the genuine concern of her attendant, gently urged her to let it go. "I get it, Oliva, and I appreciate how you always look out for my safety."
"Thank you for understanding, Your Highness. I've gathered everything we need, so we can head back to the castle whenever you're ready."
"I'm ready to return to the castle now, Oliva. Thanks!"
As they made their way back, the princess couldn't shake off the image of the young dragon who had caught her eye earlier. Her heart raced at the thought of him. What was it about that brief encounter that stirred such feelings inside her? Was it just because he had noticed her looks? Or was it the way he had gazed back at her? Still, she pushed those thoughts aside, knowing full well that some questions might just linger unanswered—for now, at least.
Once a year, dragons and the humans they advise gather in various castles or palaces, depending on who is playing host. This time, it's Uilliam's turn to host the event, and he has asked Ioulos for help in organizing everything. For Uilliam, it's also a chance to show the young dragon what it's like to lead both humans and his kind.
At Doersam Palace, two letters arrived. One was an invitation from Uilliam for the annual gathering, while the other was a formal request from Prince Yaakov, the heir to Lurvey Palace, expressing his intent to visit. Prince Yaakov has been betrothed to Princess Genoa since birth, but they've never met. Now that she has grown into a young lady, the two families are ready to make everything official and finalize the marriage. This means that once they tie the knot, the princess will likely have to move to Lurvey Palace, as Prince Yaakov is destined to be its future king.
Hearing the news, Princess Genoa felt certain that her father, His Majesty the King, wouldn't take her to the grand event with the majestic dragons. Yet, she's not ready to become someone's wife just yet—her curiosity about the dragons would not allow it. So, she resolved to attend the event by any means necessary, knowing this might be her only chance.
As King Eliyah's carriage set off for the gathering, the princess quietly slipped out of the palace and followed behind, determined to reach Uilliam's castle. When she arrived, she was mesmerized by the sight of so many incredible dragons. She had only seen one or two at a time before, but now she marveled at their vast wings, sharp horns, and even a few that could breathe fire.
