The Contract That Changed Everything

1031 Words
The rain poured relentlessly against the glass walls of the towering skyscraper, blurring the glittering city lights below. Inside, everything was silent cold, controlled, and intimidating. Just like the man who owned it. Ava Thompson stood at the entrance of the penthouse office, clutching her worn handbag tightly. Her fingers trembled slightly, but her chin remained lifted. She had come too far to turn back now. “Miss Thompson,” the assistant said, gesturing toward the massive mahogany doors. “He’s waiting.” Ava swallowed hard. He. Everyone knew who he was. Ethan Blackwood. The youngest billionaire in the country. Ruthless in business. Untouchable in society. A man whose name alone could open doors or destroy lives. And today, he had summoned her. Ava pushed the doors open. The office was vast, elegant, and suffocatingly quiet. At the far end, standing with his back to her, was Ethan. His tall frame was rigid, his presence commanding. Even without seeing his face, Ava felt the weight of his authority pressing down on her. “You’re late,” he said, his voice low and sharp. Ava frowned slightly. “I arrived exactly at” He turned. And just like that, the words died in her throat. Ethan Blackwood was even more striking than the rumors suggested. Dark hair, perfectly styled. Piercing eyes that seemed to see through everything. And a face carved with cold precision handsome, but completely devoid of warmth. “You don’t argue when you’re already in a weak position,” he said calmly, walking toward her. Ava forced herself to stand still. “I’m not here to argue,” she replied, steadying her voice. “I’m here because you said you could help me.” Ethan stopped just inches away from her. Close enough for her to notice the faint scent of expensive cologne. Close enough for her heart to betray her composure with a sudden, sharp beat. “Help,” he repeated, almost amused. “That’s an interesting word.” Ava clenched her fists. “My father’s company is collapsing. You’ve already started acquiring shares. If you take full control, hundreds of people will lose their jobs. My family will lose everything.” Ethan’s expression didn’t change. “And?” he asked. Ava blinked. “And… I’m asking you to stop.” Silence stretched between them. Then, slowly, Ethan walked past her and sat behind his desk. He leaned back, studying her like she was nothing more than a business proposal. “I don’t ‘stop,’ Miss Thompson,” he said. “I acquire. I build. I win.” Ava felt her chest tighten. “So that’s it? You’re just going to destroy us?” Ethan tilted his head slightly. “Not necessarily.” Hope flickered dangerous and fragile. “What do you mean?” she asked. He reached into a drawer and pulled out a document, sliding it across the desk toward her. “A deal,” he said simply. Ava hesitated before stepping forward and picking it up. Her eyes scanned the first few lines… then widened. “No,” she whispered. Ethan’s gaze remained steady. “It’s a simple arrangement.” “Marriage?” Ava’s voice rose, disbelief flooding her tone. “You want me to *marry you*?” “A contract marriage,” he corrected coolly. “One year. In exchange, I’ll save your father’s company and ensure your family’s financial security.” Ava stared at him, her heart racing. “This is insane,” she said. “Why would you even—” “Because,” Ethan interrupted, his voice suddenly sharper, “I need a wife. And you need a miracle.” The room felt smaller. Colder. Ava shook her head. “You could have anyone. Why me?” For the first time, something flickered in his eyes something dark, unreadable. “Because,” he said slowly, “you’re the last person I would ever choose.” The words hit harder than she expected. Unwanted. The implication stung, but Ava refused to show it. “Then find someone else,” she said, placing the document back on the desk. “I won’t marry a man who sees me as nothing.” She turned to leave. “Walk out that door,” Ethan said calmly, “and by tomorrow morning, your father’s company will be gone.” Ava froze. Her breath caught. “You’re bluffing,” she whispered. “I never bluff.” Silence fell again, heavier this time. Ava’s mind raced. Her father’s tired face. The employees who depended on them. The years of hard work that would vanish overnight. And all of it… rested on this one impossible decision. Slowly, she turned back. Ethan was watching her, his expression unreadable but certain. “You’d really force me into this?” she asked. “I’m offering you a choice,” he replied. “Accept the deal… or lose everything.” Ava looked down at the contract in her hands. Marriage. To a man who didn’t want her. To a man who could destroy her. To a man whose cold eyes made her feel both terrified… and strangely drawn. Her heart pounded louder. This wasn’t just a decision. It was a trap. And yet… Was she really strong enough to walk away? Ava lifted her gaze to meet his. “If I agree,” she said slowly, “what guarantees do I have?” Ethan leaned forward slightly, his eyes locking onto hers. “Only my word.” A dangerous answer. But something in his tone made it sound unbreakable. Ava exhaled shakily. And then She picked up the pen. But just before the tip touched the paper… A voice echoed in her mind. What if this is the biggest mistake of your life? Ava hesitated. And Ethan’s eyes narrowed slightly, as if he sensed her doubt. “Make your decision, Miss Thompson,” he said quietly. The rain outside grew louder. The clock ticked. And Ava realized… Once she signed, there would be no turning back. Her hand hovered over the contract. Would she really become the unwanted bride of a billionaire? Or was there something far more dangerous waiting behind that signature?
