The Water Wolf

The Prophecy

David's POV:

I spent the day trying to find out what might be going on. Rose smells like my mate but somehow doesn't have a wolf scent and doesn't seem to react to me the same way. Since mom was sleeping when I went earlier, I decided to talk to dad. Unfortunately, he didn't have any information for me. He said that if she didn't smell like a wolf, she may be some other kind of supernatural. But if that were the case, she should still have the same reaction to me, even if she doesn't know by smell. He said I should talk to mom if she is clear enough when I see her. I was already planning on doing that, so I am headed back to her care home. Hopefully she will be awake and lucid. I invited Rose on a date, and she seemed to take a little convincing, but I need to know what is going on.

As I walk into the memory care unit with the code that Rose gave me earlier, I see her talking with a male resident and attempting to convince him to let her take him to the bathroom. She doesn't see me, and I figure that is for the best until I speak with mom. I knock on mom's door and announce myself and, to my surprise and pleasure, she is awake and at least knows who I am.

"Hey mom, I came earlier, but you were sleeping, so I let you sleep and decided to come back later. How are you doing?" I say as I kiss her on her cheek.

"David! I'm so glad you are here! I need to talk to you about something!" Mom looks very animated as she talks to me. She's sitting in her recliner and she turns off her TV which was, of course, on old westerns. "Hand me my glasses and that old book on my dresser, will you? And come sit down. Did you meet the gal working today when you came in?"

"Rose? Yeah mom, I met her. I actually wanted to talk to you about her."

"You sensed that she is your mate, didn't you?" Mom raises her eyebrow at me.

"Wait, how did you know? I wanted to talk to you about how she could be my mate when she doesn't smell like wolf."

"It's all in this book. There's an ancient prophecy about our family. You and Rose will fulfill it. I just know she is the one, and you will stand by her side. Here, just let me read it to you and then we can talk."

When the danger to werewolf kind reaches its peak,

And packs are forced to disband to blend in with the humans,

A child will be born to human parents, but she will not be human.

She will go through many challenges in her life.

And she will be unaware of her purpose.

She will not gain her wolf at 18.

No one will be able to sense that she is a werewolf.

But on the night she turns 30,

She will stand under the full moon,

A great storm will rain down,

And when her mate kisses her,

She shall gain her wolf.

On that night,

She shall become the most powerful werewolf to have existed.

She shall be the one,

Chosen by the moon goddess herself,

Who will make the world safe for werewolf kind,

Reassemble packs,

And ensure the protection of all werewolves.

She shall reign as Werewolf Queen,

With her mate beside her,

They will start a line of Royal Alphas

To be the peacekeepers and protectors,

Of the werewolf species.

All of their family line will have direct access to the moon goddess,

Who shall guide them in their roles.

As Mom stops reading, I can't help but stare at the page. Baffled not just by what she just read, but by her thinking that Rose and I are the ones mentioned in the prophecy.

"Mom, why do you think that prophecy has to do with Rose and I?"

"You will see. I know it to be true. Talk to Rose. She turns 30 on Monday. Monday is the full moon. A storm is supposed to roll through that night. And it's been 30 years since the packs were forced to disband. It all makes sense. You have strong alpha blood, David. Our alpha line would be the perfect line to start this Royal Alpha bloodline. Besides, you said yourself that you can sense that she is your mate. Just ask your wolf."

"She's right, David. I don't know how she knows, and I don't know how I know. But I can sense that this is our purpose and I know that Rose is our mate." I hear my wolf, Eric, say inside my head.

When I look at the clock, it is 5 minutes until 2pm. I kissed mom on the cheek and walked to the nurses station to get Rose. As I approach, I see her standing behind a cart with a tall brunette in scrubs. She must be the swing shift CNA. I can tell they are finishing up what they need to do so that Rose can leave, so I take the opportunity to look more closely at her. She's much shorter than I am, probably by a foot or so. She has her dirty blond hair pulled up in a clip. She's not wearing make up, but she is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. I can see a couple tattoos on her forearms, and two bigger pieces just peaking out from under her scrubs on both her upper arms. One of the tattoos on her forearm is a semi colon tattoo. Upon seeing that, I immediately become extremely protective of her. I will make sure she never feels like that again. At that, Eric breaks through with a growl. He's not happy about it either. His growl makes both Rose and the other gal's heads swing towards me with their eyes wide.

"Sorry, I just got a text from work that wasn't good." I say, looking for an excuse.

"Oh, that was you?" Rose asks with a shocked look on her face.

"Yeah, sorry about that. Are you about ready to go?"

"Oh. Uh yeah, we just finished up. I just need to go clock out and get my belongings from the staff break room. Where did you want to go and at what time? I can meet you there after I go home and change out of my scrubs."

"If that makes you more comfortable, we can do that. But I was hoping you'd let me drive you to my place so that I can cook for you, and we can get to know each other better. There's not much open today anyway, and then you could just stay in your scrubs if you wanted, or I could take you by your place to change beforehand."

"Umm. What if I drive to my place, and you can follow me there and then, after I change, I can follow you to your place. That way I have my own car. It would just make me more comfortable, in case my kids need me for some reason."

"Sure. Whatever works for you. I'll just meet you in the lobby when you're ready."
