CHAPTER 2

SIERRA POV. “Good night, Sarah, and thank you again for helping out with an extra shift.” Old Pops said as I stepped out of the little diner where I just finished my double shift. The one girl called in sick this morning, but I didn’t mind. The extra money meant that I was one more step closer to getting out of here to move on to the next place. Being a werewolf gave me lots of options to travel on four paws, and in truth I would get to places quicker in wolf form, but I couldn’t risk it. Even between my own kind, I stood out anyway, so I decided it was safest for me to travel the human way. “Thanks Pops and no problem, I’ll see you tomorrow.” I said and waved him goodbye as he disappeared back into the diner to lock up for the night. Pop’s is a good man and I felt bad for giving him a false name, but I had to keep my identity secret. Not just for my safety but for others as well. At least the name Sarah sounded close enough to Sierra. I sighed when I got to my little car, and I just sat there. I always hated this part of my day when I finished working. At work I had a purpose, something to occupy my time with, but now… I was stuck with trying to decide where to spend the night again. I couldn’t risk getting caught again so I would have to try and find another place to park and sleep and then start my day all over again in the morning. I sighed again. This was not the life I envisioned for myself but at least it was something that I had control over. I started up my little banged up car and drove away from the little diner. I almost made it to the other side of the town when I realised that I needed to refill and then it hit me. I started to feel my pockets and I groaned when I realised that I forgot my little wallet with my money at the diner. I must have forgotten to pocket it when I changed in the lady’s toilet before I left. I turned around and headed back. I just hoped that he hadn’t locked up yet. I sighed in relief when I saw Pops’ car still in the parking lot and I quickly parked, got out and ran to the door. The lights were already out but I knew he would open for me. I knocked on the doors and I fleetingly saw movement inside. I knocked again. “Pops?” I called out and I heard rustling inside. I tried the door handle and to my surprise it was still unlocked. Strange. As soon as I opened the door, the smell of blood overwhelmed my nose and I stumbled back outside, but I was too late. Glowing eyes in the darkness of the diner crept towards me and there was more than one pair that had their sights set on me. “Oh Gods! They found me.” I uttered before my fight or flight set in and it was usually flight. I turned and ran for it and I swear I could hear giggling before growling followed me across the parking lot and I ran to the road. I knew that it would be pointless to get away in my little car. They would be on me even before I could start it up and with my tank on low, I would not have made it far. A car barely missed me but I didn’t care. I needed to get away. The panic that was bubbling up in my chest was making me think unclearly and I could barely hear Luna talking to me. I made it across the road and into the thick threes that ran the length of the road and darkness enveloped me. I wasn’t afraid of the dark, it used to comfort me when I was younger and still did. I started to calm down. The panic I felt was still holding fast but my mind was starting to clear and with it I could start to hear my wolf, Luna. “Let me take over, you are too slow to get away in this state.” Luna said and she was right. She was stronger and braver than me. I let go of myself in my mind and I felt her come forth as my bones started to snap and reform themselves and within a few seconds, we were running through the dark on all fours. With my wolf ears I could faintly hear the pounding of paws behind me but with Luna being a smaller wolf that the others, she was more agile and faster. That was something that made me different from the other omega’s. None of us were strong but I had at least speed to get away. I broke through the trees and into a clearing… the pounding of clawed paws behind me getting further and further away. The light of the moon luminated Luna’s white fur to give it an almost glowing look and I knew that I had to get back under the cover of the trees again. I stood out even against other wolves so I tried not to shift between my own kind. The only other white wolf that I knew of was a luna of another pack. Lyca or something. She had gotten her wolf only after she had found her mate and their pack, The Dark Moon Pack, was known to be fierce and had no mercy for outsiders. That was probably the reason why I hadn’t tried to look her up. I didn’t want to be killed on sight. The shadow of the trees blanketed my white fur again as I ran, putting more and more distance between me and THEM! ‘How did they find us?’ I asked as I watched Luna steer herself through the trees. ‘I don’t know.’ She answered and a shiver of fear ran through my body again. ‘We can worry about that later, but right now we have to get away…’ “AAAHH!” I screamed internally as a pain sliced into our upper hind leg. Luna yelped in pain before stumbling to the forest floor. We tried to get up but the pain in my leg wouldn’t let up and when we turned to look, we knew why… a coldness washed over me as if someone had just dunked a bucket of ice water over my head. There were four long claw slashing wounds on my upper leg, but that wasn’t what had the fear pumping through my veins again. It was the wolf that was lazily walking towards me and licking his hungry muzzle. ZION!
