Chapter 3: Confessions

Piper's eyes locked onto Max's, her curiosity piqued. "What is it?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Max took a deep breath, his eyes scanning the horizon as if searching for the right words. "I'm not just a best man," he said finally. "I'm also the groom's business partner." Piper's eyebrows shot up in surprise. "Really?" she asked. Max nodded. "We own a chain of hotels together. The Oceanview Hotel is one of our properties." Piper's mind was racing. She had no idea that Max was a successful businessman. "Why did you keep it a secret?" she asked, her curiosity getting the better of her. Max shrugged. "I didn't want to intimidate you, I guess. I wanted to get to know you as a person, not as a business associate." Piper felt a flutter in her chest. Max's words were sweet, but she couldn't shake off the feeling that there was more to his story. Just as she was about to press him for more information, Max's phone buzzed again. He sighed and answered the call, his expression turning serious. "I have to take this," he said, apologizing to Piper. "It's business." Piper nodded, feeling a pang of disappointment. She had been enjoying their conversation. As Max walked away to take the call, Piper couldn't help but wonder what other secrets he was hiding As Piper stood there, watching Max walk away to take the call, she felt a sudden urge to explore the hotel. She had been so focused on the wedding and her conversation with Max that she hadn't had a chance to check out the amenities. Piper slipped inside and made her way to the hotel's lobby. She was immediately struck by the elegant decor and the sound of soft music playing in the background. As she wandered around the lobby, Piper stumbled upon a small art gallery tucked away in a corner. She had never seen anything like it before - the artwork was stunning, and it seemed to capture the essence of the ocean. Piper felt a sense of wonder wash over her as she explored the gallery. She had always loved art, and this was like nothing she had ever seen before. Suddenly, she heard a voice behind her. "You have a great eye for art," it said. Piper turned to see a woman standing behind her, a warm smile on her face. "Thanks," Piper said, feeling a sense of shyness. "I just love art." The woman nodded. "I can tell," she said. "My name is Sophia, by the way. I'm the hotel's art curator." Piper's eyes widened in surprise. "Nice to meet you, Sophia," she said. As they chatted, Piper learned that Sophia was not only the art curator but also Max's sister. As Piper continued to chat with Sophia, she couldn't help but feel a sense of curiosity about Max's family. Sophia seemed warm and welcoming, but Piper sensed that there was more to the story. Just as she was about to ask Sophia another question, Piper's phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out to see a text from her best friend, Rachel. "Hey girl, how's the wedding planning going?" Rachel asked. Piper smiled, feeling a sense of relief at the distraction. "It's going," she replied. "But I need to tell you about the best man...." As Piper filled Rachel in on the details, Sophia politely excused herself to attend to some other matters. Piper continued to chat with Rachel, feeling grateful for her friend's listening ear. But as they talked, Piper couldn't shake off the feeling that she was getting in over her head with Max. As Piper continued to chat with Rachel, she heard a faint sound coming from the art gallery. It sounded like someone was playing a piano. Piper's curiosity was piqued. She excused herself from the conversation with Rachel and walked back to the art gallery. As she entered the gallery, she saw Max sitting at a beautiful grand piano, his fingers moving deftly over the keys. The music was hauntingly beautiful, and Piper felt herself getting lost in the melody. Max looked up and caught her eye, a soft smile spreading across his face. He continued to play, and Piper felt herself drawn to him, as if by an invisible thread. As the music came to an end, Max stood up and walked over to Piper. "I didn't know anyone was listening," he said, his eyes sparkling with amusement. Piper smiled. "You're very talented," she said. Max shrugged. "It's just a hobby," he said. But Piper could see the passion in his eyes, and she knew that music was more than just a hobby to him. As Piper stood there, mesmerized by the sound of the piano, she felt a sudden sense of connection to Max. It was as if the music had bridged the gap between them, and she could see a deeper side of him. Just as she was about to speak, Max's eyes locked onto hers, and he took a step closer. "Piper, can I ask you something?" he said, his voice low and husky. Piper's heart skipped a beat. "What is it?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Max's eyes seemed to bore into hers. "Do you believe in fate?" he asked. Piper was taken aback by the question. No one had ever asked her that before. Piper's eyes locked onto Max's, and she felt a sense of intrigue. "I'm not sure," she said finally. "But I do believe that some things are meant to be." Max's face lit up with a warm smile. "I like that," he said. "I've always felt like there's something more out there, something that connects us all." Piper felt a shiver run down her spine. There was something about Max's words that resonated deeply with her. Just as she was about to respond, Max's phone buzzed again. He sighed and pulled it out, his expression turning serious. "I'm so sorry, Piper," he said. "But I have to take this. It's an emergency." Piper's curiosity was piqued. What kind of emergency could Max be dealing with? As Max walked away to take the call, Piper couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. What was going on?
