The announcement

Christine's POV

"The ceremony is about to begin. Let's go and take our seats. Tonight is going to be a shock for a lot of people. I cannot wait to see their faces when they realize what I have planned for them. Come on, Christine, let's go and sit down. I'm getting too old for this, but it's one of these days when you take over from me and run all the business that I run. You will have to attend all these parties, and I can go and play golf like I love to do all the time. I am glad that you have agreed to join the family business. Jonathan, you have been unusually quiet tonight. I know you are not a man of many words, but you are really quiet tonight," My father says.

"Dr Baxter, I am just watching everything going on around me. Sometimes it is better to keep your mouth shut and just observe what is going on," Jonathan smiles.

"Here is the working together, Professor Stevens," I say as I lift my glass of wine.

"Call me Jonathan, and we will work together at Voice View, but we will never forget Sacred Heart," Jonathan says.

We are all waiting for the announcement of the head of the surgical department. My father does not want to do the announcement because he wants to distance himself from the one who has been chosen for the job.

Yes, my heart is still broken.

Mike replaced me with Emma, and Mike doesn't care that it hurts me. If only he knew what I knew. However, I will not say anything, and I refuse to show them how much they are hurting me by being here together!

Inside me, my heart is in shatters, but I keep smiling. Although I know it does not reach my eyes, I am too proud to show them how I really feel.

It is not easy to see your husband with another woman. I have done everything for Mike. I know that he doesn't appreciate anything I have done for him, but I am not going to let him see how much he hurts me. I am not going to allow him to know that I do care about the way he looks at Emma, a way he never looked at me. I was only an incumbent to him, and I was the reason why we could buy a house, because I used all the money that I had earned from being a doctor to buy that house. I even bought his parents' house, but he did not think that I would take it back. I am glad I never registered the houses in their names and that I registered the properties in my name.

One of the board members stands up. It is time for them to announce the new head of the depart surgical department.

My father smiles at me as he takes my hand in his. He knows that I'm going through hell because I have to love Mike. Maybe not as much as I should have, but I still have feelings for him. We spent a lifetime together, and he treated me like I was trash. He even threw me out of my own house. I cannot believe it. Now is not the time to think about it. Now is the time to start living my new life without him and his parents, who always made my life difficult because they wanted a grandchild I could never give them.

Maureen and John are sitting at the table next to ours with Emma and Mike. Emma has a smug smile on her face. She keeps looking at me while touching her tummy. Mike has a grin on his face, as if he knows that he is going to become the head of the surgical department tonight. He looks like someone would has just won the lottery.

The board member stands at the front of the crowd. We have raised a lot of funds, and my father has promised me that it will go to Sacred Heart, as our hospital does not need it.

"Ladies and gentlemen, first of all, I want to welcome all of you here at the party tonight. The fundraiser money for tonight will be given to Sacred Heart Hospital Center. As you know, we have a beneficiary every year, and this year we have decided to give all the money that was raised here tonight to Sacred Heart Hospital. As you all know, Dr Morris Stanton, our Head of the Surgical Department, has resigned this year, and we want to thank him for all the years he has spent with us. He is going to retire, and we hope that he enjoys the rest of his life. Now, without any further ado, I am going to announce our new Head of Surgical Department. We are very happy. To announce that Dr Waltz will be our head of the surgical department," He says.

Mike gets up and waves to everybody. He looks at me with that same smug smile on his face as if he is challenging me, but the board member frowns. He takes his speech out of his suit pocket and walks to the front of the room.

"Dr Mike Waltz, what are you doing here? I was not finished with my announcement. The head of the surgical department is Dr. Christina Waltz. I'm sorry, I should have said Dr Christina Baxter. I keep forgetting that you are getting a divorce," The board member says.

Mike stops dead in his tracks. His smile is frozen on his face as he looks pale and turns around to look at me with hatred in his eyes. I hear Maureen suck in a deep breath.

I get up to walk to the front of the podium. However, Mike does not want to move. He is just standing there in the middle of the aisle, trying to block me.

"There has been a mistake. Emma promised me that her uncle was the one who had appointed me as the head of the department. How did you become the head of the department? Is it because your father is Dr Baxter? I demand an explanation from the board. I want to know why she was appointed and not me. This is favoritism!" Mike shouts.
