Queen Thora noted the exchange between her daughter and the tall young servant. She also noticed his reddish-blonde hair and the faint glint of green under his rough-hewn tunic. A spark of recognition flashed in her mind.

She knew then that this was the Water Witch’s son. The young man was not supposed to be here. She knew that he was supposed to be executed with his mother or banished from Kingspell. Thora could still remember how he cried when he was separated from his mother. He was wailing, tears spilling down his chubby cheeks. His little arms were reaching for his mother, who was tied up with a thick rope. She was being led away for her execution.
