Chapter 2 – Eyes That Haunt Me

1005 Words
Kael’s gray eyes locked onto Luna as if five years of silence had not passed at all. As if she had never left. As if he hadn’t been the one she ran from. The clearing was empty, but she felt exposed, peeled open under the weight of his stare. He had always looked at her like that… like he could see every truth she tried to hide. Now there was another truth, small, fragile, breathing softly at her side. Rory. Kael’s gaze lingered on the child with a haunted confusion, but he said nothing. Luna could feel the storm in him, the anger and shock he was holding back with the strength of an Alpha who’d lost more than he admitted. Finally, his voice cut through the silence, low and cracked at the edges. “Why… now? Why return after all these years?” Luna forced her heartbeat to steady. “Because running isn’t living. And because some secrets… refuse to stay buried.” Her voice didn’t shake. Her hands didn’t tremble. But inside her chest, everything was shaking. Rory tugged at her sleeve, eyes wide and curious. “Mama… he looks like you.” Luna exhaled slowly, kneeling in front of her daughter. “Yes, baby,” she whispered. “He does.” She lifted her eyes just in time to see Kael flinch like the words pierced clean through him. For a moment, he didn’t look like the Alpha. He looked like a man devastated by a truth too big to swallow. “You knew,” he murmured, the words barely air. “All these years… you raised her alone. You kept her from me.” Luna straightened, anger sparking through the cracks of her calm. “You kept yourself away, Kael. Don’t twist the story now.” He inhaled sharply. The guilt in his eyes was unmistakable. And it made her furious that she could still read him so easily. That, after everything, her heart still reacted to every flicker in his gaze. Rory stepped forward, her little voice soft but steady. “Papa… don’t be mad at Mama.” Kael froze. The word Papa seemed to unmake him, breaking something open in his chest. His hand trembled before he reached out slowly, cautiously hovering over Rory’s shoulder as if she were made of moonlight and one wrong touch would make her disappear. “I’m not mad,” he whispered, though pain thickened his voice. “I’m just… I didn’t know.” “You didn’t,” Luna said quietly, her throat tight. “And I didn’t expect you to.” She hated how much she wanted him to reach for her. She hated how much she wanted to run. Kael’s gaze flicked between her and Rory, his expression carved with regret. “She’s beautiful,” he murmured. “Like you.” Luna’s heart clenched in a painful twist. “She’s mine, Kael. And I will protect her from everything, even if that means protecting her from you.” His jaw tightened, hurt flashing through his eyes before he masked it with Alpha steel. “And yet you walk back into my territory,” he growled. “Do you understand what danger you’ve invited? Who might have followed you?” Luna stepped toward him, her voice like a blade. “I don’t fear danger. I’ve survived things you can’t imagine.” The air crackled. Her wolf was on edge. His wolf was pacing beneath his skin. They were standing too close, now close enough to feel each other breathe, close enough to feel the heat of five years of unresolved longing pulling taut between them. Then... A rustle. Soft. Wrong. Both of them turned sharply. Kael’s hand flew to his dagger. Luna instantly pulled Rory against her, shielding her with her body. “Who’s there?” Rory whispered, gripping Luna’s coat. Kael didn’t answer. He didn’t need to. The forest was no longer silent… it was watching. Something dark moved between the trees. A presence. Heavy. Familiar. Kael’s voice dropped to a razor-edged growl. “They’re here. Someone followed you.” Luna’s blood ran cold. She had been too careful. She had erased her tracks, doubled back, masked her scent… And yet someone had found her. Someone who shouldn’t have. Rory’s small hand tightened in her coat. Luna knelt, brushing her trembling fingers over her daughter’s cheek. “It’s okay,” she whispered, though fear scraped the back of her throat. “I’m here. I won’t let anything happen to you.” Her eyes lifted to Kael’s. A silent agreement was passed between them. Old wounds didn’t matter now. Only Rory did. “We face them together,” Luna said. Kael’s nostrils flared as he studied her, searching her face for lies. For fear. For trust. He found something else, something complicated and painful. Finally, he nodded once. “Stay close to me.” A branch snapped. Then another. This time, much nearer. Kael shoved Luna and Rory behind him, his wolf surging, eyes flashing silver. The forest’s shadows shifted, moving as if alive. A howl ripped through the night. Not from a pack wolf. This one was deeper. Harsher. Wrong. Luna’s heart lurched. She knew that sound. She had heard it once before, long ago, on the night everything went wrong. Kael’s head whipped toward her, eyes widening. “That scent, Luna… tell me you didn’t lead him here.” Luna’s breath hitched. Her vision blurred for a second. She knew that scent. She knew that howl. She knew exactly who was coming. And she prayed Kael never learned the truth behind it. Because the man hunting them… …wasn’t just after her. He was after Rory. Another howl split the forest closer. Hungrier. Kael snarled, stepping forward with his blade drawn. “Get ready,” he said, voice low and lethal. “This isn’t just any rogue.” Luna swallowed the terror clawing up her throat. Because she knew what was coming. And the truth was far, far worse than Kael imagined.
