Chapter 11 – The Things Left Unsaid

1012 Words
The darkness didn’t fade. It breathed. Kael’s body tensed, one arm instinctively sweeping in front of Luna and Rory as the shadows rippled across the walls, silent, living, watching. His wolf surged under his skin, claws scraping against the edges of his control. “Stay behind me,” he growled, voice low, lethal. Rory trembled in Luna’s arms, eyes still glowing faint gold, the last echo of her vision burning through her. “Kael,” Luna whispered, heart hammering. “The shadows ” “I see them.” His tone was a blade, sharp and ready to kill. But the shadows were quicker. They slid along the ceiling like oil, merging into a single mass before dissolving into nothingness. The lantern shards on the floor stopped shaking. The cold retreated. Silence returned. But it wasn’t the same. It felt violated. Changed. Marked. Kael exhaled slowly, muscles still coiled like steel wires. “Rory,” he murmured softly, turning toward the bed, “look at me.” The little girl clung tighter to her mother, trembling. Luna stroked her back, whispering comfort against her hair until Rory finally lifted her gaze. Kael’s breath hitched. Her eyes, those golden, innocent eyes, looked older than they should. Frightened. Knowing. Burdened with a vision no child should have. “What did you see?” he asked gently. Rory swallowed hard. “Mama’s shadows. But… bigger. Angry.” Luna stiffened. “My shadows?” “No,” Rory whispered, shaking her head. “The ones from before. In the old city. The ones that whispered.” Kael’s jaw clenched. This wasn’t just a curse. This was a warning. A message. And he felt it in his bones. Soren’s reach wasn’t just growing… It was already here. He turned to Luna. “We’re done hiding in corners.” Luna met his gaze, wounded, defensive, protective all at once. “You think I want this? You think I chose this life for her?” Kael didn’t flinch. “No. I think you fought alone. And I hate that you did.” Luna blinked, taken aback by the honesty in his voice. Kael stepped closer, slow and deliberate. His presence filled the room, powerful, overwhelming, undeniably Alpha. “Luna,” he said quietly, “you should’ve trusted me.” Her breath trembled. “And you should’ve chosen me.” The words landed between them like a blade. Every muscle in Kael’s body locked, his breath dying in his throat. Luna rarely spoke so openly, so painfully. And the truth of it ripped into him. He dragged a hand through his hair, guilt tearing through his chest. “I made mistakes.” “You didn’t make mistakes,” Luna cut in, voice breaking. “You made choices. Choices that told me exactly what I meant to you.” Kael’s wolf snarled inside him, hating every word yet knowing she spoke truth. He took another step toward her. “One rejection,” he said hoarsely, “one decision made out of fear—and you think I didn’t break every night after you left?” Luna faltered. Kael’s voice dropped lower, raw. “You think I didn’t regret it the moment you were gone? That I didn’t search for you until the forest bled into dust beneath my feet?” Luna swallowed painfully. “You searched for the Luna you thought you lost. Not the woman you pushed away.” Their eyes locked, hurt clashing with hurt, love buried beneath scars. Rory shifted, exhausted, her small fist curled in Luna’s shirt. The sight softened something inside Kael, grounding him. “We’ll fight later,” he murmured. “Right now, I need answers.” Luna exhaled shakily. “Then ask.” Kael moved to stand closer, his presence warm and dangerous. “Why did the shadows react to my voice? My anger?” Luna hesitated. Kael’s eyes narrowed. “Luna. Don’t hide this from me, too.” She closed her eyes. “The curse... binds to emotion. To bloodlines. To power. When you shouted, your Alpha aura flared. It stirred the Veil Light in Rory. And where there’s Veil Light…” Kael finished quietly, “…there’s shadow.” Luna nodded. Kael cursed under his breath. “So my presence triggered her vision.” “No,” Luna said softly. “Your power did.” He went still. “You’re saying I awakened it?” “Yes.” Kael’s heart dropped. Rory stirred again, mumbling in a half-dream, “Daddy… don’t be sad.” His chest cracked open. He brushed a hand over her hair, voice breaking. “I won’t be.” Luna watched him, a silent ache in her gaze. Then... A faint thump echoed through the walls. Kael’s head snapped toward the door. Luna stiffened. “You heard that, right?” “Yes.” Thump. This time, louder. Kael moved first, swift, silent, deadly, placing himself between danger and his family. He reached for the doorknob. “Kael, wait,” Luna whispered urgently. “Something’s wrong.” Kael’s hand froze just as the scent hit him. Cold. Metallic. Shadow-tainted. He stepped back, muscles locking into battle-readiness. A slow scrape dragged along the wood of the door… as if claws, non-wolf, non-human were tracing the surface. Rory whimpered, burying her face in Luna’s neck. Luna’s arms tightened protectively. Kael’s voice dropped to a whisper that vibrated through the room, “Get back.” The lantern glass on the floor rattled, shadows pooling under the door like spilled ink. Then... A voice whispered from the other side. Not spoken. Hissed. “Kael…” Luna’s blood went ice-cold. “That’s not Soren.” Kael’s wolf surged, snarling violently. “No,” Kael growled, stepping forward, aura exploding through the room. “That’s something he sent.” The shadows under the door swelled alive, changing shape. Then... A child’s giggle echoed from the darkness. Soft. Wrong. Rory’s eyes snapped open, glowing brilliant gold. “Daddy…” she whispered, terrified. “He found us.” The shadows exploded through the door like a storm. And Kael roared.
