We lapsed into a serene silence, our eyes speaking the unspoken words of affection, smiles dancing on our lips. The world around us seemed to blur, leaving just the two of us in this moment of pure connection.
Sasa stood up, her movements graceful as she adjusted her trousers to her waist. She took a thoughtful sip of her ice cream, then walked a few steps away, turning to face me with an earnest expression. "My dear," she began, her voice soft yet serious, "it’s not just about love or trusting you. It’s about how this love will be perceived and accepted in my home. Do you think it's possible for us, given our circumstances, our families, and the fact that I could be married off any time next year once I finish college? Did you consider all of this before you spoke to me?"
Her questions, sharp and direct, sent a wave of anxiety through me, making my palms sweat.
Caught off guard, I found myself unable to respond immediately. I was lost in the whirlwind of my thoughts.
She gave a small, reassuring smile, stepped closer, and gently embraced me, whispering in my ear, "Calm down and think deeply about what I’ve said."
Taking a deep breath, I began to explain, my voice steady yet tender.
"I have thought about this, Sasa, but I wasn't sure how you would perceive my thoughts or how you would react to all the plans I've made regarding us and how I envisioned our future together."
Sasa's eyes softened with understanding. "I see. So you have been planning and considering all of this, but were unsure about my response?" she asked gently.
I nodded, feeling a mix of relief and nervousness. "Yes, exactly. I just didn't know if you would share the same feelings or if my plans would align with your own hopes and dreams."
She smiled and moved a little closer, her curiosity evident. "Tell me about your plans. I'd like to hear them."
Taking a deep breath, I gathered my thoughts, wanting to convey everything with clarity and sincerity. "Alright, Sasa," I began, looking into her eyes, "I've been thinking about us a lot. I want us to build a future together, one filled with love, understanding, and support. I know our families and circumstances might present challenges, but I believe that with patience and perseverance, we can overcome them."
"I know it won't be easy for us, but what I have planned is that after you finish your college studies, you should continue to university. This will buy us more time until I complete my law studies and then come back to marry you and make you mine..."
"Goodness! That's a huge impossible!" my Mumma will never agree to it..." Sasa said, her voice filled with worry and doubt.
"Mumma will never agree," Sasa murmured, her voice filled with despair. "She will never agree to delay my marriage for a few more years. Plus, knowing my mother, she'll never allow me to go to university..."
I could see the concern in her eyes, the fear of her family's disapproval weighing heavily on her. "Sasa, I understand your fears," I said softly, taking her hand in mine. "I know convincing your family won't be easy. But I'm willing to go through the struggle because I believe in us. I believe in the love we share and the future we can build together."
She looked down, the weight of my words sinking in. "But how can we make them see things our way?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
She startedshedding tears and deeply closed her eyes as her body started quivering of fears of losing ou love.
I stood up and wrapped my arms around her, holding her close as she felt the warmth of my body and the calming scent of her perfume. We stayed silent for a while, finding comfort in each other's embrace.
Finally, I mustered the courage to whisper in her ear. "Don't worry, trust me, and promise me you'll stand by my side no matter what. I have a plan to convince your mother to let you go to university. Just promise me you'll continue your studies and wait for me to finish my law degree... If you do this, I promise to be your happiness forever and to take care of you until my last breath."
She began to cry, clinging to me even tighter, her head resting on my chest. "I love you, but I know my mother will never agree to this," she said, her voice filled with sorrow.
