Chapter 5: The Challenge

752 Words
Their happiness was interrupted six weeks later by the arrival of an unexpected visitor. Ethan appeared at the Shadow Creek territory boundaries, alone and looking haggard, demanding to speak with Kane. The guards brought word of his arrival to the pack house, and Skye felt her blood run cold at the mention of his name. "He wants to see you," Kane said, his voice carefully controlled. "He's claiming some kind of prior right to you, demanding that I release you from our bond." Skye's hands clenched into fists at her sides. "I don't want to see him," she said firmly. "He made his choice, and I've made mine. He has no right to demand anything from me." Kane's expression softened with pride and love. "That's my brave mate," he said, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. "But I'm afraid it's not that simple. He's demanding satisfaction, claiming that I stole you from him. According to the old laws, he has the right to challenge me for you." The words hit Skye like a physical blow. The old laws were ancient, dating back to the earliest days of their kind, when disputes over mates were settled through combat. Most modern packs had moved beyond such primitive practices, but the laws were still technically valid, and if invoked, they had to be honored. "No," Skye said, her voice rising with panic. "He can't do this. He rejected me, publicly and cruelly. He has no claim on me anymore." "The law doesn't see it that way," Kane said gently. "According to the old codes, a rejection can be withdrawn if the rejecting party challenges the new mate to combat. If he wins, the original bond is restored. If he loses..." Kane's voice trailed off, and Skye saw something dark flicker across his features. "If he loses, what happens?" she asked, though she was afraid of the answer. "If he loses, he forfeits not just his claim on you but his life," Kane said quietly. "The challenge is to the death, little mate. There are no half-measures." Skye felt the world spinning around her, the happiness and security she had found with Kane suddenly threatened by the selfish actions of the man who had already caused her so much pain. "You don't have to accept," she said desperately. "You could refuse the challenge." Kane's expression was gentle but resolute. "I could, but that would mean acknowledging his claim, allowing him to take you back. And that, my dear mate, is something I will never do. You belong with me, and I will fight to the death to keep you safe." The formal challenge was issued the following day, with representatives from both packs serving as witnesses. Ethan looked terrible, his face gaunt and his eyes haunted, but there was a desperate determination in his bearing that made Skye's heart ache with unwanted sympathy. "I made a mistake," he said, his voice carrying across the ceremonial ground. "I was wrong to reject her, wrong to let pride and fear blind me to her true worth. I'm here to claim what is rightfully mine, to make amends for my foolishness." Kane's response was calm and measured, but Skye could feel the fury radiating from him. "You had your chance," he said, his voice carrying the authority of absolute command. "You threw it away in the most public and humiliating way possible. She belongs to me now, and I will defend that claim with my life." The combat was set for the following evening, under the light of the full moon. Skye spent the intervening hours in a state of barely controlled panic, torn between her love for Kane and her guilt over being the cause of what might be his death. She had never wanted violence, had never wanted anyone to die because of her. "This isn't your fault," Kane said, finding her in the garden where she had gone to try to calm her nerves. "This is about his pride, his inability to accept that he made a catastrophic mistake. You are not responsible for his choices." "But if you die because of me—" Skye began, but Kane silenced her with a gentle finger against her lips. "I won't die," he said with absolute certainty. "I have too much to live for now. I have you, and our future together, and the life we're going to build. He's fighting for his pride, but I'm fighting for love. And love, little mate, is always stronger."
