Alex’s POV
I stared at the empty café table, my coffee long gone cold. Liz’s words still echoed in my head, sharp as glass: "I don’t know if I can do this."
She had walked out, her eyes brimming with betrayal, and I had let her go. Not because I didn’t care, but because I knew this wasn’t the time to push. She needed space, fine. But I wasn’t going to just sit back and let things fall apart. That wasn’t me.
I pulled out my phone, staring at her name on the screen. This wasn’t over. I don’t lose. I hadn’t built Donovan Luxe from the ground up by waiting for things to come to me. I went after them. I made them happen.
This situation was no different. Liz was hurt, but I knew what we had was real. She just needed to see it too.
I pocketed my phone. I would give her the space she needed, but not for long. There was a plan forming in my mind—something bigger than a simple apology. Something that would prove to her exactly who I was, and why she belonged in my life.
Liz’s POV
I couldn’t sleep. The past 24 hours had been a blur of confusion, anger, and heartbreak. Every time I closed my eyes, all I saw was Alex—no, Xander Donovan—staring back at me, his face full of guilt, his words echoing in my mind.
“I wanted you to know me before you knew the rest.”
But the rest wasn’t some small detail. It was his entire life, his entire identity. How could I trust him now?
The man I thought I’d been getting closer to was a lie. He wasn’t just Alex, the guy who made me laugh, who kissed me like I was the only person in the world. He was Xander Donovan, CEO of the company I worked for, a man I barely knew.
I glanced at my phone. A dozen unread messages from Emily, asking if I was okay, if I wanted to talk. But I couldn’t even begin to explain what was going on.
I had thought I could handle it. I had told myself that Alex—or Xander, whoever he was—didn’t matter. That I didn’t care enough to be hurt. But the truth was, I cared more than I ever wanted to admit.
Eric’s POV
I watched as Alex sat across from me, calm, composed—too composed, really. His usual cool demeanor wasn’t gone, but I could see the storm brewing beneath the surface. This wasn’t like him. He was always in control, always one step ahead, but now...
“She walked out,” he said, his voice steady but sharp, like he was recounting a business deal that had gone south. “She looked at me like I was... like I was a stranger.”
“Well, you did kind of hide a pretty big part of your life from her,” I said, taking a sip of my drink. “What did you expect?”
He gave me a look, one that was all ice. “I didn’t expect to get this involved, Eric. I didn’t expect her to matter this much.”
“Yeah, well, welcome to the real world,” I shrugged. “You can’t fix everything with some grand gesture.”
He leaned forward, his gaze darkening with determination. “I’m not waiting for a grand gesture. I’m handling this.”
I raised an eyebrow. “Handling it how?”
He sat back, crossing his arms over his chest. “I’m going to give her space. But I’m not going to let her walk away without seeing what we could have.”
I frowned. “That’s a dangerous game, man.”
Alex’s eyes flashed with something sharp, something unyielding. “It’s not a game. I know what I want. And I don’t lose.”
Liz’s POV (Later)
I couldn’t concentrate. My thoughts kept spiraling back to Alex, no matter how hard I tried to focus on work. Everything felt tainted by the weight of the truth I had learned—his lies, the hidden reality of who he really was.
When Emily texted me to meet for lunch, I almost didn’t go. But I needed an escape. I needed a break from the endless loop of doubt in my head.
We sat at a small café near my office, the afternoon rush starting to pick up as people filed in and out. Emily watched me carefully from across the table, her brows furrowed.
“You’ve been quiet,” she finally said, setting her cup down. “What’s going on?”
I sighed, running a hand through my hair. “It’s... complicated.”
Emily leaned in, concern written all over her face. “I heard about what happened with Alex.”
Of course, she had. Nothing stayed secret for long, especially with our family.
“I just... I don’t know if I can forgive him, Em. He lied to me.”
Emily reached across the table, squeezing my hand. “Maybe he deserves a chance to explain. People make mistakes, Liz. And from what I’ve seen, he really cares about you.”
I looked away, biting my lip. “I don’t know if that’s enough.”
Alex’s POV
I waited outside her office, not pacing, not fidgeting—just standing there, waiting. I had promised myself I wouldn’t push her, but I couldn’t just let this go. I had to see her. I had to take control of the situation.
When she finally walked out, she froze at the sight of me.
“Alex...”
“Liz, I know I shouldn’t be here, but hear me out.”
She hesitated, her eyes flicking to the floor. “I don’t know if there’s anything left to say.”
“There is,” I said, my tone firm but not desperate. I stepped closer but didn’t crowd her. “I know I lied to you, and I’m sorry. But I wasn’t lying about us. About how much I care about you.”
She looked up at me then, her eyes full of hurt. “How am I supposed to believe that, Alex? You kept the most important part of your life from me.”
“I know, and I should’ve told you from the start. But I didn’t. I was afraid you’d only see me as your boss, not as someone who... wanted more with you.”
Liz’s breath hitched, and for a moment, I saw something softening in her expression. But then she shook her head.
“I need time,” she whispered. “I need space.”
I nodded, my jaw tight. “Take your time. But know this—I’m not walking away. I’m not giving up on us.”
She didn’t respond, but I could see the turmoil in her eyes. She turned and walked away, but this time, I didn’t feel like I’d lost her.
This wasn’t over. I would give her time, but I would also show her why I was worth the risk. Why we were.
