Episode 4: The Secret Unfolds

1453 Words
Liz’s POV Sunlight trickled through the curtains, its golden warmth barely touching the chill beneath my skin. I stretched, my body still humming with the echoes of last night—pleasant, yet unsettling. What began as dinner had become something else. Something more. And for the first time in a long while... I felt alive. But as the quiet morning settled in, so did the familiar knot in my stomach—a reminder that happiness never comes without a price. Alex had been everything I didn’t even know I was looking for, but still, there was something about him... distant, like a door I could see but couldn’t open. I shook the thoughts away as I slid out of bed. No. Don’t overthink it. Today was a new day, and my project for Donovan Luxe could be a game-changer. I needed to stay focused. But even as I pulled on my work clothes, my thoughts kept drifting back to Alex—the way he looked at me, the way he made me feel seen, like I was the only person in the room. But… I’d felt this before. Troy had that same ability—to pull me in, make me believe I was everything, until he left me with nothing. I pressed my hands against the cool bathroom counter, staring at my reflection. Is it different this time? I wanted to believe it was. But that knot in my stomach... it twisted tighter, refusing to let me go. Alex’s POV My thumb hovered over the screen, the message half-typed. Unsure. The weight of my secret—the reality of who I am—pressed harder now. Xander Donovan. CEO of her company. The words sat like a noose around my neck. I should’ve told her. I didn’t. Liz didn’t deserve this. She deserved the truth. But the truth was messy. It threatened everything I’d carefully built. And if I told her now, everything between us would shift. My walls would come down, and I wasn’t sure what would be left standing. The thought of losing her tightened something in my chest. If she found out… If I didn’t tell her soon… I could still fix this. But how? Before I could think further, a knock at my door broke through my thoughts. I knew who it would be before she entered. Vanessa never waited for permission. Alex’s POV (continued) Vanessa walked in like she still owned the place. Same old Vanessa—sharp, dangerous, like a polished blade. Once, that sharpness had pulled me in. Now, it was a warning. “Xander,” she cooed, like she still owned the name. “I’ve been busy,” I said flatly, not giving her more than that. Her eyes swept over the room, lingering on the luxury. “Quite the upgrade. You’ve done well for yourself.” There it was—the dig. The one that used to hit home. Not anymore. “What do you want, Vanessa?” She smiled, a slow, calculated curve of her lips. “Oh, I’m just keeping tabs on you. You’ve been very... occupied lately.” I didn’t respond, but I felt the shift in her tone. She wasn’t just here to reminisce—she had something else in mind. “You know,” she continued, her eyes gleaming, “it’s funny how small the world is, isn’t it?” I stiffened but stayed quiet, refusing to give her the satisfaction of reacting. Vanessa’s smile sharpened. “Elizabeth Lawrence, of all people. I would never have guessed you’d get involved with the sister of my cousin’s fiancée.” My jaw clenched as I stared her down. Of course she knew. Vanessa always had her ways of gathering information. “You’ve done your homework,” I said evenly. She leaned in slightly, her eyes alight with the thrill of manipulation. “Oh, Xander, don’t be so cold. I know exactly who she is—and more importantly, who she isn’t.” Her words hung in the air, thick with implication. “Careful, Vanessa,” I warned, my voice hard. “Stay out of this.” She straightened up, her smirk widening. “I wonder what Elizabeth will think when she finds out just how deep your little secrets run. Donovan Luxe, Xander... you think she won’t notice the cracks?” I held her gaze, my blood simmering just beneath the surface, but I didn’t let it show. “Leave her out of this.” Vanessa paused for a beat, her smile fading into something more calculating. “Oh, I intend to. For now.” With that, she turned and walked out of the apartment, leaving me standing in the weight of her threats. But I couldn’t shake the feeling that time was running out. Vanessa wasn’t the type to wait, and if I didn’t tell Liz the truth soon, Vanessa would—on her terms, not mine. Liz’s POV The day passed in a blur. My project for Donovan Luxe should have had my full attention, but my mind kept slipping back to Alex—his smile, the way he’d made me feel like the center of his world. Everything felt so real, but now... doubts had started creeping in. As I walked past the break room, the idle chatter of my coworkers caught my attention. “Xander Donovan,” someone said. My heart skipped a beat. “Yeah, he’s hands-off with this campaign, but he’s watching every detail.” “I heard he’s crazy private,” another voice chimed in. “Barely anyone ever sees him.” Private. Elusive. Sharp. My pulse quickened. Alex had been so vague about his job, always careful to deflect when the topic came up. Could it be? No. That’s ridiculous. But the pieces started falling into place—his knowledge of my work, his subtle avoidance. Alex. Was he... Xander Donovan? I felt dizzy, my mind spinning faster than I could keep up. He’d known who I was this whole time, but I... I didn’t know him. Not really. Liz’s POV (later that evening) I couldn’t go home. Not like this. I needed answers. Alex had known who I was from the start, but I hadn’t known the most important thing about him. I stared at my phone for what felt like hours before I finally typed: Liz: We need to talk. His response came almost immediately: Alex: I know. Meet me at Verona Café. Half an hour. Liz’s POV (at Verona Café) The café was small, intimate—perfect for private conversations. The kind where secrets were told. I spotted Alex at a corner table, his eyes already on me as I walked over. But there was no warmth in his gaze this time—only guilt. I sat across from him, my heart pounding, each beat heavy with the truth that had been hanging over us. “You’re Xander Donovan,” I said. The words came out steady, but inside, everything felt like it was breaking. “Yes,” he admitted quietly. “I am.” The words hit again, harder than the first time. “Why didn’t you tell me?” My voice cracked as the hurt clawed its way to the surface. “Why lie to me?” His gaze never left mine. “I didn’t want you to see me as your boss. I wanted you to know me—Alex—before you knew the rest.” “But you lied,” I shot back, the words spilling out before I could stop them. “How can I trust you now?” Alex’s expression softened, but it didn’t ease the ache inside me. “I was afraid it would scare you away. I wanted you to see me for who I really am—not Xander Donovan, CEO.” I stared at him, feeling the weight of his words, but I couldn’t ignore the hurt. “I need time,” I whispered, my voice barely holding together as I stood, hands trembling. “Liz—” “I don’t know if I can do this,” I murmured, more to myself than to him, before turning and walking out of the café. Alex’s POV I watched her walk out, her shoulders tense, her whole body radiating betrayal. The moment she walked through that door, I knew I’d lost her. Not just her trust—but her. Everything I’d feared... everything I’d tried to avoid... it had all come crashing down. I thought keeping my secret would protect us—protect what we were building. But all I’d done was destroy it. I sat there, staring at the half-empty cup of coffee, my world falling apart around me.
