Several weeks went by. There were no phone calls, no communication at all. Christmas came and went, New Year’s as well, and there were no messages of cheer on either holiday. Dean began to think it was over. Several times he started to dial Marco on the phone to apologize, but stopped himself, thinking He’s the one who needs to apologize. He didn’t keep his promise. But about three weeks into the new year, Marco called. Dean let it ring eight, nine, ten times, trying to ignore it, but at the last minute he picked the call up. “How have you been?” Marco asked, his voice warm, soothing and comforting as always. “Getting by,” Dean answered. “Busy at work.” “Me, too. We both have bosses who love us, depend on us. That’s always a good thing. But not when it interferes with our relationships
