They talked on the phone every evening that week. On Wednesday, Dean told Marco, “My boss is leaning on me to work Saturday. There’s a project due first thing Monday morning and I don’t know if I can finish it by the end of the day Friday.”
“Do you think you could finish it if you worked just a half day on Saturday? Or, better yet, could you just work a few extra hours on Friday and come up a bit later?”
“I will try to do that. I can’t bear the thought of not seeing you this weekend. Who knows when we will be able to get together again? The thought of driving five hours late at night after a long work day is not appealing, though.”
“Then here’s what you do. Plug in your phone, put it on speaker and I will help you stay awake for the whole trip.”
